This just fuels my passionate dislike for rugby and the institutionalized bias that still exists. And when the World Cup flops, tax me again...

Tax breaks for rugby bodies

The Government has confirmed special tax breaks in the Budget for the two major rugby organisations behind the Rugby World Cup.
Finance Minister Bill English confirmed the Crown would reimburse income tax incurred by Rugby New Zealand 2011, the company set up to run the tournament, and also by the New Zealand Rugby Union where it was involved.
Separately, the Crown has agreed to reimburse the union for withholding tax incurred on payments made in relation to the tournament.
Inland Revenue has clarified that anyone representing overseas unions or official overseas rugby organisations also won't have to pay tax on income received from games or Cup-related activity while in NZ.
Visitors not part of official overseas rugby bodies may also be spared the taxman's pinch, but may get 20 per cent tax deducted from appearance money or prizes received - including any bonuses handed out because their team made the semifinals.
Interest.co.nz managing editor Bernard Hickey slammed the Government for giving tax exemptions to rugby organisations when it had just announced it was halving its KiwiSaver member tax credit.

"The question is, why is the Government giving tax breaks to professional rugby players and their administrators when mums and dads have just seen one of their savings tax breaks cut?
"Giving tax breaks to professional rugby unions paying professional rugby players an awful lot of money seems like special savings for special people - and you can't get more special in New Zealand than rugby players."
Rugby New Zealand 2011 has forecast a loss of $39 million for hosting the tournament.
It will pay for accommodation, transport and other services for visiting teams, offsetting those costs with ticket sales.
The loss will be paid two-thirds (67 per cent) by the Government and the remainder by the NZRU.
The tournament is expected to bring in $500 million.

Yep. Those that think all sports are treated equally have their heads in the sand.

And ****ing rich considering all the tighten our belts wank rammed down our throats for the past few months. That's a different rant and one I'll probably start in Crowded House though.
Na, I'll start it here.
English smugly telling property investors he's gonna block their taxbreak loopholes, after the shit he got himself in with his own creative accounting, English ****ing around with everyone else's retirement fund yet the Politicians very generous tax funded scheme remains ancient and ridiculously free from tinkering. Lead by example boys.
And as for Asset selling: Agree or disagree with it, what gets up my nose is hearing English crowing they have so many millions worth of assets...
Does he bollocks. HE HAS NOTHING! They do not belong to them as of right- They are merely ****ing house sitting, they don't own it!!!
And Labours no better, wankers the lot of them. All I know in the next election is that neither are getting my vote.

And this latest tax concession does not surprise me in the slightest. Bought to you by the ****wits that paid millions for a ****ing boat made out of tupperware.

That discussion was about media coverage - not tax breaks - or getting a leg up.

I think the tax breaks are stupid, I thought the same when the Americas Cup had them as well.

My bad. I tend to roll all negative thoughts on union into one :D

And yes the Americas cup money rips my undies as well.

Damn right Matua, the Americas Cup money is worse and actually quite repulsive considering the money in that 'sport' and isn't the national game.
But both tax breaks are ridiculous.

Remember when we hold the Americas Cup though, there are at least 10 teams of upwards of 70 people that are based here for years, it brings a shitload of money into the economy etc. Again I don't have much of a problem with it

if we were that interested in bringing money into the country we wouldn't make it so f**king hard for people from developed countries to move here.
