Manly head up coast hoping for different result

Glenn Jackson

December 22, 2006

FIVE years after they left the Central Coast as the Northern Eagles, Manly will return there - and this time, they're banking on making money.

Manly will play their round 22 clash against Newcastle next season at Bluetongue Stadium at Gosford, in the process commemorating the Knights' victory over the Sea Eagles in the 1997 grand final.

The clubs will also play annually for the Malcolm Reilly Shield, named after the coach who led the Knights to their historic win that year.

"It wasn't a great result for us that day, but it was certainly a great event," Manly chief executive Grant Mayer said.

Mayer said the clash, which will be Manly's home game, had the potential to provide a financial windfall for the club, who staged a successful one-off match against Parramatta at the SCG last season.

"We looked at all the games, and this is an attractive game for everybody," he said. "I'd love to see the 'house full' sign go up, just as long as the majority of fans are Manly fans."

From 2000 to 2002, the club - as part of their ill-fated and financially disastrous merger with North Sydney - alternated matches between Gosford and Brookvale. However, in 2003 the partnership disbanded and Manly returned to their peninsula home on a full-time basis.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Roosters will play their home games at Aussie Stadium until at least 2019 after extending their current agreement by a further decade yesterday. And the club has also announced plans to move its football club headquarters to the venue.

In a move the Herald foreshadowed in September, the club will base its playing, training, coaching and administration at the ground. The facilities will include a lit training field, gym and locker rooms and administration facilities, with chief executive Brian Canavan saying the "centre of excellence" would be another positive move as the club prepared for its 100th season.

The Roosters will open their NRL campaign at the stadium next season against Souths on March 19 in the first Monday night clash of 2007.

And the Australian Rugby League has released positive player participation figures for Victoria. According to the ARL's annual participation report, numbers in Victoria have increased by 138.7 per cent (8587 in 2005 up to 20,495 this year). Victorian school registrations have also risen 161 per cent.

Omg loving that! I probably wouldn't have made it to Brookvale Oval but now I'm there no matter what day it is. Wow, two games at the Coast, this is so exciting!

Gosford is like what the Gold Coast is to Brisbane: it is effectively another home game for us. We have won 4 orf our 5 games at Bluetongue Stadium. Most of the so called "Manly" fans will actually be Norths fans.
