Another Hayne thread

I notice that there are still plenty questioning Hayne's move to No.6, which I will admit I understand ... but those doing so may have over-looked the following:

Hayne was moved to 6 to get him more involved, the theory being that things happen around Jarryd Hayne.

Well, he has now played five games at five-eighth and that has certainly been true. He scored a double against Penrith in trial one, did it again with some superb play against the Roosters in trial two, was quiet against the Warriors, pulled off three key tackles against South Sydney and then produced two more massive plays against Canberra.

That's four wins from five and Hayne has played a major role in all four.

I'm not sure if people are expecting Hayne to be a different sort of five-eighth than he is because of our overall lack of a top-class playmaker but it seems to me that where Hayne is concerned, it's mission accomplished so far for Daniel Anderson.

Personally, my issue is that he's not doing anything at 6 that he couldn't do from anywhere in the backline, especially fullback. I just feel that having Hayne at 6 takes away from having another genuine playmaking option in the side for the sake of having a talented but ultimately hit and miss attacking player closer to the action. Don't get me wrong, Hayne could play a successful role at 6 in the future, but in terms of team balance I feel we need Keating and/or Mateo in the halves for direction and playmaking, and Hayne running off or chiming into backline movements from the back

I think 2009 Hayne is a much improved version. The Hayne I saw on Sat looked focused on playing footy rather than looking in the mirror and was happy to put his body on the line time and time again. I was quite impressed.

Best of all his hitups were strong and he has eliminated the little dance that he did from centres or fullback last year. I'm happy for him to stay where he is for the time being.

Agree with most things you said, but the bit in red!! :? He did at least 3 of them.

A lot of number 6's these days simply just tackle or pass the ball to a centre. We can see what Inglis can do from 5'8th. Hayne was wasted in the centres last year because he was only ever given the ball at the last minute so couldn't do anything. At least being able to take it one pass off the ruck gives more oppurtunity. Once the side balances and combinations work out it'll pay off.

I think I'm almost 100% in agreement here - except that I think Mateo should be able to do his ball playing from the lock position.
I'm of the opinion that Hayne has an extremely high awareness of the game (a high "league-IQ" if you will) - and tends to find the right times to make his moments. The longer he spends at 5/8, the better he'll become in the 'talk department', and he'll be organising the troops before too long.

I don't disagree with you but I also see no real need to move him.

I'm happy to keep going with the Hayne experiment for the time being at least - and possibly in the long term if he keeps improving.

Hayne is set to become the best 5/8 in the game. He will also develop a passing game. At the moment, I like what he's doing. Keeping things simple and not trying to overplay the play. What he did against the raiders was absolutely freakish. I dont think to many players in the comp could have caught that intercept, let alone ran the length of the field. And that pass to Ben Smith in the lead up to Grothe's try was sublime. Something Finch should be shown over and over again by our coaching staff.
I haven't seen a well time pass like that since Tim Smith last played.
