Anthony Griffin Disappreciation Society

He appears to be Matt Elliott Mk 2. I always thought Brennan should have got the gig after Cleary got punted, even as just a 1 year deal to begin with. He is a NRL coach in waiting.

Gus has made so many bad decisions. Plenty of good ones too. But they shouldnt get him off the hook for the bad ones. All the bad ones were easily identified at the time they happen too. Many were happy to give him the benefit of the doubt. But in the long run the questionable decisions proved to be poor ones.

Anthony Griffin is a dud coach

Peta Hiku was a stupid signing. I said it at the time. Massive waste of money on a position we had plenty of options in. Now we are making room for an average player in the team because we were dumb enough to pay overs for him. Not his fault... it was a terrible signing by us.

Tim Browne was a waste of a spot. I don't care what he signed for. He's wasting a top 25 spot and is no better than the likes of Akauolo, Kikau and Leota. When we have RCG, Tamou and Latu in our top 17, our last prop needs to be a beast with impact. Not an enferior version of what we already have.

James Tamou... He's a good player but not worth half what we paid him. Paul Vaughn would have been a shitload cheaper and he is 5 times the player. Just like Peta Hiku it was a terrible decision to spend big money on an overrated player.

The retention at Penrith has been amazing. The recruitment is impressive in a sense (luring big names), but the players serve no purpose other than adding big names to our roster. They dont actually improve it or identify a weakness.

Our biggest is hooker. We have Wallace and no one else. Not a damn thing has been done to improve the situation. We arent trying to convert our surplus rom another position. We havent tried to sign a promising young talent or even shown any signs at developing one of our young guys. An injury to Wallace and we are deadset f**ked... moreso than we already have been.

Throw in the Idris signing too as a bad descion. It just doesn't get mentioned as much because we were lucky to get out of the deal.

2 from 7 will soon be 2 from 9 as I suggested a week or so ago. I genuinely believe us or the knights will get the spoon. If we continue with the performances we've witnessed over the past month, of which there are no signs of us turning the corner, then I can't see us beating Parra and we are no chance of winning in Brisbane.

Just saw on Reddit that we only beat three of the other top 8 teams last year (Brisbane twice) and 3 of those games, we won by a point. Griffin is not the man for the job.

Geoff Toovey would be the only NRL experienced coach without an NRL gig worth considering.

Griffin looks to have filled his role here. We need a coach who sees the potential of Moylan at 5/8th and is willing to try converting TMM to a hooker.

If we get a coach who can pull that off. It would solve a few big issues. The other would be fitting Blake, Peachey and Whare into their best positions. No real option there that doesn't restrict one of their ability.

After re-signing Whare (to a ridiculously long deal) the only option I see here is Peachey back the bench & Blake/Whare in the centres.

Not all bad as I don't see Peachey being able to overcome his selfish play, that's just his natural style.

In terms of coaching replacements it definitely seems a toss up between Toovey & Brennan. Have heard Brennan isn't interested in a full time role though? (Just some fan chatter)

other experienced options that could soon be available

- Michael McGuire
- Craig Bellamy (end of 2018- obvs a long shot)

There's not a heap out there.

Bring back Elliott at this point. At least he had players chasing the bombs
Yep. Although he had his favorites and kept them in anyway possible.

Nathan Smith and Adrian Purtell were the first players picked. Smith did have a great season in 2010 and Purtell probably did more for us than Hiku has so far. Maybe the coach is why Hiku is fat, slow and lazy. Before his arrival he was a rep player.

Bellamy would have him playing great footy. He is much better than Cheyse Blair... yet Blair looks better than our guys despite having 1% of the talent.

I wasn't too worried about him but we haven't won against a top 8 team this year and probably won't make the finals now.

We have a bunch of young players prone to brain farts and simple lost ball. We desperately need a coach with a strong game plan and tactical nouse that can get the players to think more strategically and which gets them to value the ball more while they are still learning and adapting. But instead we have this joker who thinks "Play it as you see it" is a valid coaching philosophy and which is just magnifying their flaws, instead of compensating for them. As a result, we have raw talent stagnating and making the same mistakes when it counts. We can smash shit teams, but put us up against anyone with a modicum of structure and fight, and we struggle. This has been proven for a season and a half now.

Basically, if we are keeping Griffin on, we had better hope the players can sort their own shit out and mature, and maybe they can drag him along to success.

It's stunning there are musings from the club about re-signing Griffin. Why the rush?

I agree. He is contracted until the end of 2018 and any decision about an extension should not be made until next season at the earliest, obviously depending on how we finish this season and how we shape up in 2018. He is not going to be sacked that is a given, but at the same time if we fail to make the finals this season and do not improve substantially in 2018 then common sense would dictate his reign will surely be over.
