After watching this movie and a few others, Im a bit confused with the whole NFL thing. Are the teams in this movie made up because I have never heard of them before. Or is there like a NRL's version of the superleague competition. Like is there more then one competition?
Sorry, this may sound like a silly question to someone that has been following the American Football, but I'm keen to start following NFL but it's a bit confusing to the beginner

The teams were infact made up, the players during the movie that were shown in the ghost type images weren`t though. And an EX NFL SUPER STAR was in the movie, Lawrence Taylor the guy with the gold tooth, or the tough motherf**ken Linebacker who gets his million dollars LOL. Yeah i`ve got it on special edition on DVD got it when it first came out one of my fav movies.

Jerry McGuire was about nfl in part yes, but more to the point about sports management/sports as a marketing tool at best. But yes your right about them other movies what you said anything to do with the NFL is great.

To answer another question you originally asked, there are other leagues. There is the NFL Europe which is kinda like the English Super League equivalent (except a lot further behind in quality), and there is an Arena Football League which is on a smaller field and played indoors

Yeah mate Arena League football kicks arse, smaller field and indoor padding its a classic FREE BALLS FOR THE CROWD TOO HAHA. I`d have to also say that out of the above choices of movies, i`d pick Any Given Sunday.

In the 1960s there was a true alternative to the NFL, called the American Football League. The AFL was an upstart competitor which became very good, and its teams were absorbed into the NFL in the merger of 1967 - they form the bulk of the current AFC. AFL teams won the 3rd and 4th Super Bowl, which were the last 2 contested between the 2 leagues, before the merger was finalized.

Since then there have been other attempts to compete with the NFL: the World Football League of the early 70s, the more succesful USFL of the early 80s, which signed quite a few good players, and the XFL of recent time. All these leagues were doomed in their attempt to compete with the all-powerful, incredibly wealthy NFL.

I have to mention the Canadian Football League here. The CFL has different rules than US football, and has a lot less money of course. But I would argue it's of a higher quality than NFL Europe or Arena football, and has provided a lot of good players to the NFL. Jeff Garcia being probably the best-known right now.

An older NFL movie worth renting (or hiring as you guys say), is North Dallas Forty. Made in 1979, it is based on a book by former Cowboy Pete Gent, and takes a critical look at the NFL.

I actually am kinda counter partial to the College Football movie, and what really goes on in college with players. The movie I am thinking of is called "The Program" that woul dbe right up there with AGS!!! its a really good movie. it was banned in the USA. For obvious reasons it showed how players used steroids, and the dumb/less intelligent payed ppl to take their SAT exams and what have you also..goes on still tho. Great movie to watch if you can grab it.

Its got the guy from Any Given Sunday who plays a Defensive end steroid pusher......He was the guy from any given sunday who rushed to the shitter with the doctortrunning closely in a rears with the drip lol.

I haven't seen The Program, J-T, but it starred James Caan as the coach, right? Where did you hear that it was banned in the US? I've never heard of such a thing.

If you ever get your hands on the dvd or video like i`ve got, it`s got a little sticker on it "says banned in the US"......so I dunno maybe it was maybe its BS.....I don`t care but thats what it says lol. I could understand why it was banned tho. It brings home to reality alot of home truths about the College Programs that goes on. James Caan is in it yes.

I did a search of the movie The program, and found nothing about it being banned. But I did read about a scene where players laid down on a road in front of oncoming traffic. The site said that scene was removed from the film after some teens imitated it and were killed. I'd heard this before but had fogotten it. I wonder if that's what your banned sticker was about, travolta? Is that scene in your copy?

Another good old film to rent is Paper Lion, based on a book by the late author George Plimpton, who spent a training camp with the Detroit Lions as a quarterback, and wrote a book about it. Like an inside look at the NFL. The movie isn't as good as the book, but it uses the 1968 Lions as actors in the movie, playing themselves. It gives a good look at an NFL training camp in that day. The players are a lot bigger now. Lions star Alex Karras was a natural comic actor in the film, and went on to play in Mel Brooks' movie Blazing Saddles, and a few other movies and a TV series. One interesting part in the film is a brief appearance by legendary Packers coach Vince Lombardi. I don't know if such an old film is available in Aus, but it's worth a look IMO.
