Supplying soft drink to nuns? Our Bernie is an absolute champion. Probably serves up soup to hobos as well.

Sponsor woes bite premiers

IT’S hard to believe NRL premiers Cronulla Sharks can’t find a major sponsor on the eve of the premiership. The same with Parramatta Eels, the game’s most popular team in Sydney’s west.

The situation is causing huge problems for jersey manufacturers and major sports stores such as Peter Wynn’s Score and Rebel.

Fans don’t want to buy a jersey that’s out of date and January sales were slower for this reason.

The Eels’ position is understandable considering the scandals of recent years which led to Dyldam quitting after almost 20 years.

Cronulla, however, not only won the premiership but are celebrating 50 years in the competition.

Looks like Cronulla have just enough f**kwits to win the comp but too many to attract a major sponsor. It's a funny old game. I reckon rugby league requires so much determination and aggression that being a f**kwit is a definite advantage.

Controlled f**kwittery is the key to success.

It's what I taught my young bloke's under 8s team last year.

See, if they would just sell sponsor-free jerseys, I just don't get why fans would wait for some stupid corproate logo (maybe) to be emblazoned on the front before buying?

Sponsor-free jerseys should also be a little cheaper ($5-$10?), and if the situation continues I am looking forward to buying my first (sponsor-free) updated jersey since 2008 - when I bought one of those sponsor-free centenery of league eels heritage style jerseys...

I just wanted 7 on the back of mine so I could pretend I was Sterling.

I was pretty devestated when my number got ripped off in a bruising game of backyard footy and my mum had to sew it into a wonky looking 4.

Everybody wants the wear the same one the players are wearing , any time there is no sponsor on something it doesn't sell as the fans wait til a sponsor is on them.
I got caught with some training shirts that had no sponsors on them a couple of years back, a sponsor was signed a few weeks after they came in and the players all got it heats pressed on theirs and because the ones retail didn't have it no one bought them til they were sold below cost. Lost a packet on them and won't make the same mistake again.

If it's good enough for the club it should be good enough for the fans. Without the corporate partner's logo it looks like a cheap knockoff from the markets.
