Despite some reports to the contrary, I actually believe the clause in Vella's contract gave the club no choice about the release, but that he was personally willing to stay if it was going to be a problem fopr the club? Must've been told it was OK, new signature obtained or not...

that's correct, also I'm lead to believe that his departure was also due to the fact of a little pay upgrade that we were entitled to give one of our young stars due to his sudden rise to fame this year. ;-)
