He spoke about the June 30 deadline! and revealed to my amazement :roll: that we don't have much left under the sallery cap! for next year however they are looking at more options to them, no names given.

not good news for those off contract!

Well when you sign 4 high profile NRL players I don't think anything else could be expected. I'm glad we're close to the cap, better that then rorting it. I think it would always have been assumed that those not already signed up would have a hard time getting new contracts. Craig Stapleton is probably the least lucky, but the club has to move forward and although I don't want to see him go I can accept it for the players coming to replace him.

I'm not surprised at all because of the players signed by the club for next year. It'll be interesting to see what happens but the rumours of Dykes going back to Cronulla continue to grow.

THe Eels have about 15 players coming off contract some of them are regular 1st graders and wouldn't really be on nothing those being.

- Lee Hopkins
- Craig Stapleton
- Ronald Prince
- Shane Muspratt

Then there are at least 10 other fringe 1st graders coming off contract, who individually wouldn't be on a lot but when you get 10-12 of them it does add up.

Hopkins and/or Muspratt would be handy as interchange hookers, something we'll need for next year with Riddell at the club.

I likd Muspratt against Manly but they were really mediocore so thaTS probably why he looked so good. He could fit that role though.

* Muspratt never really impressed me

* Muckert plays one game, gets injured, gets back, plays another, gets injured again and so on

* Prince is good. But he's a specialist fullback. And Wade is a superstar. And even next year when Wade will be unavailable due to Origin commitments ( :D ) Burt or Graham will probably play fullback

* I REALLY like Hopkins. But with Widders, Morrison, Wagon and O'Dywer ahead of him, he'll probably have to go

* I think Langi's gone OK this year - solid. But he'll probably go.

* Bye bye Thorman

* Bye bye Dykes

I'd keep Thorman.

and that is about it. If we lost Thorman, I would like them to chase Luke Dorn, if he isn't already signed up by then.

Chase Luke "the tackler" Dorn?? No thanks!! The guy is the biggest defensive liability I've ever seen (yes, bigger even than Preston Campbell!) - In his recent first grade game I think he missed 6 or 7 tackles... that is just hopeless!!!

I think we do need to look at a replacement backup hooker - I don't rate Muspratt - even in the Manly game he looked ordinary, he just ran around a little bit in the last 20 minutes and backed up to score the 50 pointer! But he's slow and unskilfull.

Hopkins has more pace and is a good defender (perhaps a bit small for a second rower) - but can he play the role of hooker consistently? Perhaps if we told him that's what we wanted him to do, and if he took a pay cut to try it then I'm all for keeping him - he's at least got some playmaking skills!

Please release "duds" Dykes - the guy is hot and cold and we'll never be a top 4 team with him - his inconsistency will cost us, we'll win some big games, and lose some easy games with his random cross-field style....

Stapleton - what does he offer except his head as a punching bag? No, that's harsh - he's been really good this year, but has no particular stand-out skill and I think that Chris Armit offers us everything Stapo does and then some - by Stapo and let Armit develop in Premmies for a couple of years

Langi - I'd like to keep him round, but that depends on how they see the young guns going in the next couple of years - Langi would be handy if we had an injury in the centers - but if B Smith or Graham is going to stand up and be counted maybe Langi needs to go

Prince - highly exciting player, sign him to a Premier league contract for next year, can't imagine anyone knocking down his door to sign him up considering he's been injured all year

ronny will get snapped up by another club despite his injury.

hope he doesnt bite us on the arse tonga style, i have a feeling he will though. Given a chance he'll be a weapon.

Peek and Stapleton need to be benched. Does anyone remeber their introduction to the game after 20min. They dominated but then we had injuries and the bench and startiong line up was reshuffled. Id love to see them be impact players

After speaking to a few people "in the know", we can be fairly sure that a majority of our 1 year signings for 2004 will not be back with the Eels in 2005.

I think Robinson will put on a couple of Kgs in the off season and play abit of prop as well next season. Vella, Stringer, Tsoulos and Cannings arn't the most endurance fit guys in the world. Robinson might come into front row if the game is traveling abit too fast for some of the bigger boys.

we need stapo to stay - he is a gun.

actually i'd love a lot of the blokes to stay (ie Prince, Hopkins etc) but as I learnt with Ian Hindmarsh, the cap sometimes bites in a painful way.

As most people would know.. I am a HUGE fan of Stapleton's.. But I am sorry to say guys, but I have asked Craig and his response was that him & his manager haven't been in any contract discussions with the Eels. And from a couple of eels officials that I have asked the question to, it looks highly unlikely, as the response I got on both separate occasions was "Unfortunately we can't keep them all"

Well, if they let Dykes and rothe go then the club recruitment policy will be well and truly rooted. Our most potent combination is the Dykes kick for Grothe. Dykes is our best kicker by a country mile. Guru is our strongest wide runner.
