I'm a big fan of strategy games like Rise of Nations and Age of Empires and I'm having problems running Rise of Nations on my laptop and I keep getting the message my virtual memory is running low and the game starts to really slow down.

I know what virtual memory is but is it worth my while upgrading the Ram from 256 to 512 MB or is there a way I can allocate more virtual memory to stop this from happening?

You might want to try and see if anything is loading when you start the PC that hogs the virtual memory. 256 should be enough to run the game without error messages. Press ctrl-alt-del, go to Task Manager and click Performance to see what your Pagefile usage is. Anything higher than 150-200 odd (providing no other programs are running) is probably more than it should be, and means you should have a look at ways you can reduce that usage by seeing what programs are running in the background.

Right click My Computer

select properties

if your'e running 2K or XP click the advanced tab
can't remember how to do it in '98 but I think there is a performance tab there somewhere

click settings in the performance section

now advanced, you should now see it at the bottom of the window.

P.S. Virtual memory can never be more than your total free space in 2k & XP, and never more than the free space on C: in '98. In other words, clean out all your rubbish, unused progs. & temp directories and you may not need to do the above.

My son and I really enjoy these games, we play them on our home network, it is the one game type he can keep up with me or beat me on.
We started with Coammand and Conquer on PS, now he loves nothing more than nuking me on RON.

Ever played another human legend?

You can allocate more pagefile to help but that chews processing power, nothing beats more ram, especially in a laptop. Spend the dollars it will be worth it, not just the games.

I haven't played any new strategy games for years, seeing as up until recently my computer had been a vintage model which simply wouldn't run any game made this millenium. But I used to love Starcraft, probably my all-time fave game.

Warcraft II and C&C were the two games that got me hooked on RTS games. RoN is notable also like Rome: Total War.

I play Age of Empires on MSN Zone all the time but if you lived in Sydney Mr A, I'd be up for a modem game anytime you want. Playing between Sydney and Qld would be a bit expensive unless we meet up on Game Spy.

I've only just bought RoN so I'm still learning but I've progressed quite easily but the laptop keeps slowing down due to lack of virtual memory. It's quite frustrating. I might invest in some more memory this evening to speed the laptop up.

Is Rise of Nations good?

I have Empire Earth and it's OK but it is missing some things like in WW1/WW2 Engineers should be able to build trenches or bridges.

Total Anihilation was the best, I loved that game especially with the Core Contingency expansion which gave you another 75 units.

Red Alert 1 and 2 were great aswell, better than Command and Conquer even though they were basically the same.
