Thanks Ainsy's Barmy Army, I'll e-mail you some questions for your sister soon.

I'm going alright, a bit worried and overwhelmed but there's not much we can do now other than study!
I've got the first 3 days on, but they are the exams i find easiest with Senior Science and two English exams.
I'm sure everything will turn out alright though..........I hope haha

Thanks Legend,
I know this exam isn't the be all and end all by a long way. But it surely is a big worry at the time!
I'd be proud of creating a bloody good internet community personally

I'm very proud Youngie. It's just the hangers on like Willow and Ozbash I was speaking on behalf of mate.

Also, don't get yourself totally twisted out of shape for these exams. Enjoy yourself.

Dropouts Legend?? LOL, i never considered 4unit 'kite flying' as a dropkicks subject ;)
Don't worry to much about it Youngie and Ainsy. I got through it not to long ago, the main thing is not to stress. The practice exam questions will almost always be harder then what you cop in the exam. I remember doing the english hsc exam really well. All the pre exam questions were really hard, but they relented for the final exam. Just keep your cool and it will all come 'flooding' back.....
Also, remember to enjoy it as Legend said! The 'celebrations' after the last exam was something i will always remember hehe. Just keep an eye out for funny looking guys in blue uniforms while you are enjoying yourself ;)
As for universities, charles sturt is supposed to be pretty good. My brother was planning on going there, the facilities looked quite good based on all the info pamphlets that we got. If you are looking @ going to Sydney for Uni, avoid UWS...Not a great reputation. Head for the main ones, either UTS, Sydney Uni, UNSW or Macquarie...No bias there! lol

My brother went to Mitchell Teachers Colledge in Bathurst in 1976 (I think it might be the same place). I went to stay with him for three months at the time.
Things I remember about it;
The words to Jethro Tull's 'Thick as a brick' seem very profound when you are stoned.
There are 16 pubs in Bathurst and, in 1976, they all let in underage drinkers.
Pubs only served genuine travellers on Sundays in 1976, to be a traveller you needed to be 25 miles from home. The one pub town of Summer Hill was exactly 25 miles from Bathurst.
The Summer Hill pub had a jukebox that gave a song for 5 cents, but all it had was country music and Elvis, which wasn't worth 5 cents.
Colledge girls don't like football, but seemed happy to discuss where I got the muscles from.
Boat races have nothing to do with water but do involve schooners ( sub-entry, vomiting through your nose can be painful, even if it is just beer)
Pot cost 20 dollars an ounce or 5 dollars a matchbox full.
Che Guavara was murdered by the Bolivian facists.
Gough will be back in power when the people wake up to themselves.
Ronald Cobb was the greatest cartoonist ever.
If you had no where to sleep there was always a bed at 100 George Street, but don't try to crack on to the little sister of the girl who has the lease, even if she starts it, and is pretty hot.
Don't buy dope from a red headed guy who calls himself El Tigre or a swarthy looking guy called Snake. They will rip you off.
Corio Whiskey is not Scotch - but, after the first bottle, you can't tell the difference.
My best memory is that colledge girls are very willing to help you keep warm on those cold Bathurst nights

Thanks Roopy, that gave me a chuckle
It's information like that that is very important but can't be found in any official University information booklet!
The best bit of your advice: "My best memory is that colledge girls are very willing to help you keep warm on those cold Bathurst nights", comments such as that make me feel CSU is the perfect place for me

MFC: Thanks for the wise words, I'd already discounted UWS despite living only a few train stations away from the Macarthur Campus.
I hope the HSC questions are a fair bit easier than the practice one's I've been doing

I was born and raised in Bathurst lived there for the first 28 years of my life. Last december I had to go back there to get my 16 year old son out of the shit hole because he was making a pastime searching out and punching the f**k out of uni students. To say that I was not happy would be an understatement. How ever the uni students are not a popular element with in the town never have been and the only ones who were were the the ones who chose/choose to inject themselves into the local sports scene. Bathurst is the hub of Group10 rugby league stretching from Cowra in the south to Mudgee in the north.Group10 is renown for being the physically toughest competition out side of the nrl in nsw.
Bathurst supports 2 clubs Bathurst panthers(backed by Penrith) and St. Patricks who just cleaned up in both 1stand reserve grade grand finals and it seems to be the club that the uni students gravitate towards. It was also the club that I played for unfortunately these days they wear the canterbury jumpers. If you make a habit of rooting shooting and bandicooting you will probably have an enjoyable stay in Bathurst. If you play hockey you will think you have died and gone to heaven.

Feral Dragon: Thank's for the info, if your son goes back to Bathurst can you give me a warning so I can stay out of his way?

Maybe you can help me out with this one: I'm a keen League player, I've been playing for 10 years, but showing little promise of getting anywhere with the game. SO I'm just a social player, the main thing holding me back is my small size.
Anyway, I'm wondering where I'll be able to play next year? Do the footy clubs at Bathurst have several grades or would I be way out of my depth? I don't want to give up playing, but I don't think I can make the leap from under 18's football to playing against blokes a fair bit older than me.

I did a business degree at Mitchell College (now Charles Sturt Uni) from 1983 to 1985. I loved the place (Bathurst). There is some great country around there and if you go there, make sure you take a trip to a little place called Sofala on the Mudgee Rd (not far from the old gold mining town of Hill End which used to be on the $10 note). I had a couple of mates who spent about 12 months camping on the stream and panning for gold and we had a lot of great times at Sofala pub.

The pubs in Bathurst were great too. The Park, The Commercial, The Oxford and the Knickerbocker were the go in my day. The college bar was OK too and I remember seeing such bands as Midnight Oil, The Church, Mental as Anything and Spy Vs Spy there.

It was during my time in Bathurst that the infamous bikie riots took place on Mt Panorama on the Easter weekend (1984 I think). I was up there and Cold Chisel played. The Bikies went ape and so did the cops.

We used to get stoned and drive around Mt Panorama at 10km hour. Those S bends are freaky at that speed. At night, Bathurst looks like a coastaltown from the top of the mountain, with the city lights fading into blackness and giving the impression of being next to the ocean.

Anyway Youngie you could do a lot worse than spend some time in Bathurst. The people are great and although the uni students aren't that popular with the locals, they will acept you if you make an effort. I never had any problems.

Good Luck with the exams.

Youngie,
When my brother went to Bathurst he had to play onion or nothing, but there is a regular uni comp in League now. The Newcastle uni team plays Lower Hunter second div as well as in the inter uni cup. I should also mention that the student team that played in Tartastan (former soviet state) against student teams from britian and russia wa made up of uni students from NSW.
The locals in Bathurst can give the uni students a hard time, but its just jealousy, the uni students have a great time.
If you can't get a run for the uni or any of the Bathurst teams, I got a run with Orange CYMS, a great team, but I only stuck around for three games, had to get on with my life

All I know about Bathurst is that there is a silly little car race nearby each year

And all I know about PR is that I rub politically-correct tree-hugging do-gooder bleeding hearts up the wrong way when I spruke about my theory on foriegn policy.

So, sorry I guess I'm not too much help .......

Youngie,
The best PR for Bathurst would be for news to break that someone has nuked the joint. The place is a dump.
Looks good in spring if there has been winter rain.A bit speccy in autumn.
If scenery satisfies then so be it.
The place is seriously cold and near all day long fogs are no fun.
The mentality of the place belies the fact that it has an excellent array of schools.
Small town country mentality is not an enlightening experience and I for one would not choose such a place if I was embarking on my life journey. In fact, leaving the place to experience the wider world remains one of my better decisions.
Youngie, please consider your options carefully, good luck in your exams(my daughter also kicks off today).

Good luck to your daughter Lord Ted, Good Luck to ainsys_barmy_army and good luck to youngie :) I believe English was the exam on today. As long as they don't stress, they should be fine....I remember when i did it, i had a friend who was brillant at english. A 3unit student, extremely talented and she could write essays like no one else. But then she got in the exam room. Totally froze up, only completed 2 out of the 3 essays and was absolutely devastated....its good advice to offer, as long as you don't stress, you should be OK. Good luck!!!!!
Just another question of interest. Most of my relatives live in country towns, and when i go to visit them, something really strikes me. The mentality of the people. Ted, you referred to Bathurst and the 'small minded' mentality, i think most country towns have the same problem. Its unbelievable, coming from a city background, the small mindedness and ignorance of people has completed sworn me off EVER living in a small country town. Sure, its a bit of a generalised comment, but en masse....i just couldn't live with it.

Lord Ted, thanks for the sentiments. I actually know Bathurst and the country fairly well due ot having family living in the country and spending the past 6 years in a part boarding school. It is not the most appealing place I'll admit, but PR courses are few and far between, and of those courses the only 2 I would consider are the courses at Bathurst and UTS. UTS is the best course but requires a mark of about 96-97, which is probably beyond my reach.
I'm only spending 3 years there, it will be enjoyable I'm sure and I'm hoping that the range of people at the University will be somewhat more varied than your average country town.
If anybody is interested NSW hsc students kicked off with English today, our first of 2 English papers, this one is common to both standard and advanced level English and focuses only on our area of study: CHANGE. It has a comprehension, a creative piece and an essay, each worth 15 marks.
I found it a bit harder than my trial in all aspects, the questions were not straight forward but it was not all that difficult. The essay was different to what many expected as it was focused on writing techniques more than many practice essays.
English is my best subject (I'm a 3 unit student) so it wasn't extremely difficult. For the rest of this week I've got Senior Science tomorrow (easy science because I dropped physics) and our 2nd English exam on Wednesday.

MFC, regarding your comments about "small town mentality", I couldn't agree more. The levels of racism and just general narrow mindedness is very high in the country. I've got a long term girlfriend from Gundagai (goes to my school) and the times I've been down to Gundagai I've copped it from the blokes there as I'm fairly city-ish and I'm being seen to "steal one of their girls".
I personally wouldn't raise my kids in a small country town, and this sentiment is shared by many of the boarders at my school. The best indication of the small town mentality is that nearly all the boarding students at my school will definately not be living in the country later in their lives.
I like the country and it certainly has it's charms, but I could not live there long term.
