ARL rejects Lyon's rep retirement request

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/03/01/2504298.htm

Sea Eagles star Jamie Lyon faces suspension from the NRL if he refuses to make himself for representative fixtures in 2009.
The Australian Rugby League's (ARL) board has rejected Lyon's request to be made exempt from representative football.
An ARL spokesman says if Lyon is selected and refuses to play, he will be stood down from the corresponding NRL match.
The Manly five-eighth was overlooked for last year's State of Origin series after he told New South Wales coach Craig Bellamy he did not want to play.
The spokesman says Lyon does not meet the League's criteria to retire from rep football.
He says Lyon's request was rejected because he is only 27, he has not played 10 years in the NRL and he does not have any long-standing injury problems.

So we have some NSWelshman that would rather play for QLD and the others just dont want to play at all.

What a sad state of affairs.

I'm with Jamie Lyon on this one. His passion is to play Rugby League for the Sea Eagles. If that passion does not extend to the representative arena then why force him to play?

Why would you want a player who doesn't want to play & besides city vs country I don't see him being picked for many rep games anyway.

All jokes aside, i agree really.

If you dont want to play rep footy for whatever reason you shouldnt be made to, and why would the selectors pick a guy who openly says he doesnt want to play. He should have had a line through his name last year after telling Bellamy he didnt want to be a part of it.

Perfectly said. I didn't even know there was criteria.
Jeez that's stupid.

I can't imagine he would have been selected anyway, but if he doesn't want to play then he shouldn't have to. There are plenty of young blokes who would kill to play rep footy. These guys are going to do a better job then someone who doesn't care.

No coach or selector would in their right minds pick a bloke who isn't interested. Then again, the NSW selectors....never mind.

yeah - why not let him?
as if they would even pick him knowing he doesn't want to play? its another example of the farcical board decisions out of the NRL - they keep finding more ways for fans to say WTF?

Thats because the people that run the game are geniuss, seriously why would you bother selecting someone in any competetive enviroment if they dont want to be there???

It sounds like the ARL have taken this stance because they are trying to stop other players doing the same in the future. At the end of the day, Lyon has likely been unofficially "blacklisted" from any rep teams anyway, so he has gotten his wish. The only difference is that the ARL get to save some face by making it appear that they are the ones in charge of the decision-making, not the player.

Suppose you are the coach of the team playing Manly in the game he'd be stood down for and also coach CC or SOO.

That would be more than enough incentive to pick him...
