Peyton got rid of the deadwood like Shane Wright, Lachlan Burr, Mitch Dunn and Ben Hampton who were the cowboys version of say Fitz, Crossland, Jones, Mann, Johns, Saulo etc and replaced them with experienced guys like Hiku and Townsend and young talent like Luki, Naeme, Nanai, etc. Unfortunately AOB is unwilling to do away with the deadwood

Payton brought in some leaders and more importantly bashed in some toughness, both physical and mental, into the squad

When you lack talent that's exactly how you get them to compete at NRL level. It's the philosophy AOB needs to adopt this off season

All the players said all they did in the off season was tackle, heaps and heaps of tackling.

They seem to credit Dean Young for their defence too.

First 2 rounds looked like we did work on something in the off-season but we quickly fell back to old habits..

it took Mann breaking down for it to happen (and of course Barnett’s absence may have delayed it despite AOB’s mediocrity fetish), but we’ve finally got it right.

Hopefully stays that way next year with Elliott. Mann as bench utility, preferably with several challengers for the 14.

We and the media seem to hype Best up so much and I'm sure he's on a fair contract based solely on potential.

Meanwhile we had Jacob Kiraz here on peanuts and let him go.

I said early on that Best settled into top grade as smooth as anyone so young since Brad Fittler. Kiraz only just made grade now but how settled does he look 5 games in.

Very clear to see the Bulldogs are a better team for having Kiraz there.

Perhaps Best is low in confidence and isn't in the best team. Lots of injury issues as well.

But watching Kiraz play with confidence, using his skill and size and having no fear is nice to see. Then my thoughts of Best are how bad his first contact is in defence, always being bumped off on first contact. Rarely ever breaks the line on his own too.

- 2nd worst defence, only behind the Warriors.

It's not crazy to say that by the end of round 16, we may be sitting in last if we lose to the Raiders and Titans.

Other teams were still in off season mode for the first 2 rounds and we got there in round 3 onwards

So we are in off season mode from round 3 while everyone else has locked into season mode, we should go play in ESL
