Anyone here interested in the schoolboys competition? I try to follow it closely as it is more grass roots then the Harold Matthews and SG Ball.
Furthermore, I am generally more interested in the tier B results as the tier A footy schools are full of youngsters already in the junior system at NRL teams.
Sarah Redfern High just got smashed by Illawarra sports High over the weekend.
TV coverage starts next weekend I think. And it has got to be the 20th season in a row nine has covered the competition. The reason they keep showing it is that it rates surprisingly well.

Yes, I got interested in the competition the year Faifield Patrician won it the last time. They had guys like Garen Casey, Justin Morgan and a number of others who went on to grade and the metro cup etc. I think they remained competitive since then until probably the last five years. They are no longer a scholarship school which means they dont make it out of the Parra District rounds. Patrician Brothers Blacktown and the sports high schools get all the gun players now.
I think the Minichellos went to Westfield Sports.
Great comptetion. I recon St Gregorys will win it this year.

Yes, I remember Chris Yates and I have seen that he is still running around. Fairfield beat Harristown State High School from Towoomba that year. They had a couple of notables in Andrew Dunnaman and Steven Price.

Illawarra Sports High beat St Gregory's College last night in the final 16 encounter at Brookvale oval.

The score was 20-16 with Illawarra crossing the line in golden point extra time after levelling the scores with less than a minute to go in normal time.

Isn't it great to see the public schools winning, go you good things, for years the private schools took all the talent, no longer, hooray!!!!

The advent of the sports high schools who have rugby league part of their talented sports program has made a difference.

I think these sports schools are doing more harm than good. Grouping all the talent together does nothing for developing the late bloomers. I think it is a suspect school that actually provides Rugby league classes.
At St Gregorys they get the balance right between discipline, education and sport. There are plenty of examples of players not getting a go at St Gregs because their grades are not up to scratch or they are misbehaving. The same can be said of Patrician Brothers - especially Fairfield. Footy is part of the tradition, but is secendary to developing character.

I'm interested to see what Hunter sports high can put up this year, they've got 2 australian schoolboys reps in their ranks, a host of NYC players and about 3 or 4 kiwis who the knights signed from NZ

Isn't it ironic when the sports high schools first arrived they wanted to play in the MCC competition and the catholic schools said no way. Then all of sudden the catholic schools wanted to be part of the sports high school competition, sorry no. There was a problem with the uni shield with many comprehensive schools dropping as the sports high schools dominated but alas in 2007 CHS introduced uni shield for sports high schools and uni shield for comprehensive and in 2007 there wasn't a drop out. The finals day was an outstanding success and the CHS is to be congratulated for getting the balance right. Please don't try and paint the sports high schools for being the villian, what about the days when the catholic colllages had players who spent 3 years in year 12.

All schools still do this today - it is called the 'Pathways' program - from memory you can do year 12 over a maximum of 3 or 4 years.

I am interested to see the Gold Coast team (Palm Beach?) they have three Aussie School boys. Hunter is probably the team to beat from NSW seeing as they have recently smashed Endevour in the Uni Shield. They will sail under the radar a bit. Matraville will attract all the attention.

Illawarra Sports High knocked Endevour out 11-10.
They have now KO'd St Gregorys and Endevour to go into the top four. IMpressive.
