The guy I would rate as in the top few WORST refs I have ever seen, has so many howlers in him. I even hate the way he awards a try haha

It shows how low the stocks are when this guy is even involved in finals, let alone the big game

I know Matt well and he is not arrogant. He also puts alot of effort into referee development at district level.

A few years back he was told that he would never referee First Grade again, now look at him, some of the best never did a Grand Final.

Fair enough but calling yourself the best is arrogant.

It seemed to be taken out of context...looked like some nifty editing may have occurred.

He and Archer currently are the two best, theyve both had good games in this final series.

Checchin as touchie was the only one that spotted the interfernce early in the 05 GF when Bowen ''scored''...forever grateful for that one, they were already ahead iirc.

""That’s got me into a position now where I’m arguably the number one referee in this game and that’s an achievement we all dream of.”"

Least he got that right.

The exact quote - not hard to find:

Despite refereeing the biggest match of his career, and without any State of Origin experience, Cecchin was confident he would make the big calls if required.

"What got me here is the way I've refereed this year and I'd be crazy to change," he said.

"We've been given guidelines, they're clear and especially in the finals series I've just gone from play the ball to play the ball and acted on what's in front of me.

"That's got me into a position now where I'm arguably the number one referee in this game and that's an achievement we all dream of."
