I dunno why you'd be a ref.

At best you'll be ignored, at worst despised.

Why do they do it?

Cechin does come across as one of the refs who loves the spotlight and the focus being on him. I've never got that from archer. Hayne used to have it but but so much anymore. Maxwell is just completely fcked

Game would be a 34 man all in brawl without them.

Every week calls are made (and not made) that raise questions about their skill, understanding and sometimes impartiality, but they are the most necessary aspect along with the players, the field and the ball. You can drop coaches, trainers, all that shit, but you need an adjudicator.

Some of the posts in here are just plain ludicrous. 'pink cancer' pfft.

Manly will be filthy as they were hoping it would be "hometown" Shane Hayne..now with Archer and this idiot Cecchin the farks ups might work out 50/50 and the Warriors will win on ability.

So whereas the OP claimed Cecchin boasted he was the best ref in THE game, the man in question was merely pointing out that having been selected with Archer to ref the grand final, he's arguably the number one referee in THIS game (rating himself as ARGUABLY above Archer. Oh the humanity!) and is proud to be refereeing the biggest game of the year.

wtf

Hayne named top NRL whistleblower

AAP Sun, Sep 25, 2011 - 5:32 PM

Shayne Hayne has been named NRL referee of the year for the second time.
Hayne, who also claimed the award in 2009, joins Tony Archer as the only multiple winner of the Col Pearce Medal.
"Shayne has had an outstanding season and it is a credit to his commitment and professionalism that he has won this award in a season when the depth of talent within the refereeing ranks is the strongest it has ever been," said assistant referees boss Stuart Raper.

The guy I would rate as in the top few WORST refs I have ever seen, has so many howlers in him. I even hate the way he awards a try haha

It shows how low the stocks are when this guy is even involved in finals, let alone the big game

I think he's the bomb when awarding trys....very severe & forthright, almost a military like action....theres NO doubt whatsoever when chickenlegs awards a try, you can tell he's practised it

It seemed to be taken out of context...looked like some nifty editing may have occurred.

He and Archer currently are the two best, theyve both had good games in this final series.

Checchin as touchie was the only one that spotted the interfernce early in the 05 GF when Bowen ''scored''...forever grateful for that one, they were already ahead iirc.

Are you talking about the try that was disallowed because of an "obstruction" run by a defender who was behind the ball and running in support?

A thankless, difficult and easy to criticize job.

A lot of referee haters, how many of you are referees?

The problem with the current crop of refs is the refs boss. In fact, I don't blame the refs at all, I blame Harrigan.

It all started with that dwarf Hartley and Harrigan is trying to perfect it. This "Look at me I'm as important as the players" crap...

If the Refs called players by their number and reffed the games instead of coaching the games they would get more respect from the punters.

Bill, you curly-headed git, get your refs to penalise an offside player instead of telling the player he's offside. Don't tell them they have 10 seconds to take the line drop-out, penalise them if they don't take it in time. Don't call Jamie Soward "Jamie", call him number 6. Ditch the fluoro pink uniforms (if it's for charity, find another way), sit your arse down in front of the tele and watch Col Pearce ref. Throw the Hartley and Harrigan tapes in the bin.

The best ref is the one the punters don't notice. At the moment none will get that sort of acknowledgement from the punters because they ALL stand out like dog's cods.

Throughout the finals Hayne has been teamed up with Maxwell.......together they've been f*cken atrocious.

Warriors V Dragons....

Broncos V Manly....

Harrigan wants to keep the partnerships going i.e Archer & Cecchin.

It's the only reason Cecchin gets the gig.......riding on the coat tails of Tony Archer

I particularly enjoyed the Warriors Vs Dragons game. Nightingale's try at the end was a particular highlight, and I thought Locke played well for the Warriors

I'm not a politician - okay if I criticise them?

Thing is, it's not a thankless job if you go about it the right way. I have thanked plenty of referees and umpires over the years. I've had a beer with them, I've befriended a few. And it's a job, a possibly quite well paid job for all I know. One that allows them to have the experience of being on the field in the best game in the world. They take the good with the bad.

The issues people have with NRL refs generally borders around attitude, I believe. People can cop wrong decisions - they cannot cop rubbish that Bill Harrigan spouts every week, they cannot cop Hayne and carry-on like he showed with Foran last week, they cannot cop Jared Maxwell and his winking eye, they cannot cop Suttor and his condescending weasely attitude, etc etc.
