Apps reveals inspiration behind injury comeback
Fri 21st July, 09:00AM
A A

By Martin Gabor - NRL.com National Correspondent

It was the moment that robbed her of an All Stars appearance and a spot in the Jillaroos side to take on the Kiwi Ferns for the Anzac Test, and star back-rower Kezie Apps has opened up about the tough times she endured as she recovered from a broken leg suffered in this year's Auckland Nines.

The 3-0 series sweep over the old enemy should have been a joyous occasion for Apps and her teammates, but a serious injury in the second game saw the 2016 Dally M Female Player of the Year crack her left fibula and tear the ligaments in her ankle, forcing her to have surgery.

Now fully recovered and preparing for Sunday's Women's Interstate Challenge, Apps sat down with NRL.com at WIN Stadium to chat about what she's gone through since that fateful day in Auckland.

"It's been tough," Apps said of her recovery. "I was pretty gutted when it happened, knowing that I couldn't play the last game of the Nines series but also All Stars, Anzac Test and maybe even Origin and the World Cup at the end of the year.

"A lot of the goals that I'd set at the start of the year were crushed in that very moment and I had to re-evaluate all of them.

"Knowing that I couldn't play in the Anzac game, I was pretty shattered at that point, but I knew I was no hope given it was 10 weeks away and I wasn't allowed to start running until 12 weeks after surgery. As soon as I got to that mark, I actually waited an extra week because I didn't want to rush it and take any chances."

The injury itself spoke volumes of Apps's approach to rugby league.

The barnstorming back-rower had only just returned to the field after being split open with a nasty head cut but only lasted a few minutes before she had her left leg trapped awkwardly in a tackle while the Jillaroos were on the attack.

Despite the brave face she put on, she knew she'd done some serious damage to her body.

"The pain was insane and I heard a pop. I didn't know that I'd done ligaments at the time; I just thought the pop was my break and I knew not to put any pressure on it," she said.

"A lot of friends and family were messaging me that they didn't know how bad it was because when I was getting carried off the field, all I was doing laughing. At that stage, I'm pretty sure I was just in shock and my body's natural pain relief had kicked in. I was too busy worrying about them picking me up and saying 'don't I'm too heavy!' so I started laughing.

"My friends and family all thought I'd sprained my ankle, but if that was the case then I would have stayed out there."

Shod in a moon boot, Apps was able to celebrate with her teammates in the sheds after the series win, but as the adrenalin wore off, the next few weeks weren't so easy.

The harsh reality of her position had sunk in leaving Apps to ponder what was left for her in 2017.

She could have felt sorry for herself and kicked stones for the next three months, but instead turned to something equally powerful and heartbreaking to put things in perspective.

"My cousin doesn't actually know this, but he was my biggest inspiration through it all," she revealed.

"He suffered a really bad accident and became a quadriplegic after a snowboarding accident in Canada. He went over there for a six-month holiday and wanted to work over there and do snowboarding but he had an accident and was quadriplegic but he's trying to walk again so he's a big inspiration for me because my injury was only temporary whereas he might never walk again.

"Just knowing what he's going through helped me through my recovery. I had to suck it up and it turned my thought pattern around into something much more positive. "There are a lot of people out there who are in worse positions than what I was going through so I had to suck it up and stop being such a sook.

"He's trying to get movement back in his arms now so he was my biggest inspiration as well as my mum and my family.

"I also have to thank my boss at the gym I work at back home. He was fantastic in getting me back to work even though I couldn't do anything. Being around people at the gym and everyone being so positive in that environment instead of in my own bubble at home was a huge thing for me."

Apps is itching to get back for the Blues on Sunday, and if her current form is anything to go by, Queenslanders best be scared after she scored four tries in a 58-0 win over Windang in her first game back for the Helensburgh Tigers.

"Every time I was running or doing a gym session, I was trying not to focus on my leg. I was trying to get my symmetry right and not favour one leg or limp around," she said.

"Even though it might have hurt a little bit more, I was trying to push off both legs because the more I do it in training, the better it will be for me on the field."

Dragons post biggest score of the season in Manly rout

ST GEORGE Illawarra’s finals charge is back on in earnest after a stunning first-half display en route to a 52-22 win over Manly at WIN Stadium on Sunday.

On a day where defence took a back seat, the Dragons produced a near perfect opening stanza, piling on five tries to lead by 30 at the half.

FOUR-POINTER: Jacob Host celebrates his first-half try in the Dragons 52-22 win over Manly on Sunday. Picture: Sylvia Liber

It came on the back of Gareth Widdop masterclass with the Dragons skipper laying on two tries, scoring one of his own and kicking a perfect five from five for a personal haul of 14 points at the interval.

The buffer quickly evaporated with the Sea Eagles piling on four tries in the 14 minutes after the resumption before the hosts regrouped and saw out just their fourth win in their past 11 games.

It made for some nervous moments but coach Paul McGregor was pleased with his side’s effort in wresting back momentum.

“We’ve just got to learn to slow down and pull it back a little bit and re-group quicker when something doesn’t go our way,” Dragons coach Paul McGregor said of the Eagles comeback.

“We won the first half quite comfortably and we drew the second. I said to the boys are our best is ‘the best’ and our worst is ‘the worst’ so we’ve just got to close that gap in between and just a bit of self-belief at times.

“Sometimes when the score-line’s like that you can take your foot off the accelerator a touch and back off and that may have happened.

“I’m just excited about winning again and to put 50 points on any team is exceptional. We said last week we wanted to build on our performances going into the back-end of the year with everyone back. It was certainly a good sign today.”

Matt Dufty also debuted at fullback after Josh Dugan was scratched on Friday with a hamstring injury and, in a potential look to the future, had two try assists and a late try in strong first-up display.

“He’s the third guy that came through our 20s system to debut this year,” McGregor said.

“We had lot of experience there today so it was a good time to make his debut at home. He showed what he’s got, he’s got the ability to burn people with speed and he’s got a really nice to catch and pass.

“He’s strength is a little bit deceptive as well. Because he’s got that speed to get away from people so I thought it was a good solid debut.”

Both sides had some pre-game disruptions, with Manly coach Trent Barrett “resting” five-eighth Blake Green and prop Brenton Lawrence, while the Dragons lost Joel Thompson to an ankle injury in the warm-up.

It saw Jacob Host start the match and Blake Lawrie brought onto the bench a day after playing with the Steelers at Penrith on Saturday.

It did nothing to disrupt their rhythm, with the hosts shooting out of the blocks, completing 20 of 22 sets and running for a combined 1126 metres by the break.

It was a sluggish start from the visitors that coach Trent Barrett labeled “embarrassing” in the aftermath.

“With that score-line it was an NYC standard game,” Barrett said.

“30-0 [in the first half], 22-all [in the second] that’s just not up to scratch. We were down on troops but that’s no excuse to be down 30-0 at halftime.

“It was a gallant effort to get back within eight points. It would’ve been a miraculous win to come home from there, and we put ourselves in a position to do it, but it doesn’t make it easier for me to sit here and watch that.

“I’m embarrassed, the players are embarrassed. I’m accountable to it just as much as the players and we’ve got to fix it because we’ve got to go to Melbourne next week.”

Nightingale opened the scoring in the eight minute after Manly defence gave him free passage on a Josh McCrone kick with Widdop’s conversion giving his side an early 6-0 lead.

Nightingale had an air-swing at a Widdop kick on his next attempt but Tim Lafai was on hand for the scraps and the second try of the afternoon.

Widdop nailed the sideline conversion to extend the lead to 12 after 16 minutes and pushed it out to 18 when he latched onto a Cherry Evans pass and raced 80 metres to score.

The lead swelled further when Nene Macdonald batted down a kick from McCrone for Euan Aitken to cross in the western corner.

Widdop was in the action again when he put Jacob Host across from close range to extend the margin to 30.

The Sea Eagles drew first blood after the resumption through Dylan Walker to peg back the margin.

Darcy Lussick’s sin-binning for punching Jack de Belin took the sting out of their momentum but it swung back quickly when brother Joey crossed from dummy-half to cut the margin back to 18.

The game was well and truly back on when Jackson Hastings crossed from close range minutes later and the Dragons advantage had all but evaporated when Akuila Uate plucked a Cherry Evan kick out of the air for his side’s fourth try.

Paul Vaughan re-took the ascendancy for his side, stemming the flow of Manly points with a try from close range to push margin back out to 14 with 20 minutes to play.

Nightingale scored his second with an assist from Dufty to take his side’s tally to 40 and when Aitken also notched his double the Dragons had their highest score for the season.

Dufty rounded out the scoring late in the match for a final score of 52-22.

A spectacular debut by a Dragon, two strike centres, a play-making Broncos hooker and two Storm forwards lead the way in the Round 20 Team of the Week.

1. Matt Dufty (Dragons)

Dragons fans have been waiting patiently to see Dufty in the top grade and he didn't disappoint in his NRL debut. He looked lively from his very first touches and completed a memorable day out with a try a minute from full-time, two try assists, two line breaks, 11 tackle breaks and 188 run metres.

2. Daniel Tupou (Roosters)

Whether patrolling the left wing or heading in-field for a carry Tupou caused problems for the Newcastle defence wherever he turned up, scoring a try, registering two line breaks, five tackle busts and amassing 179m.

3. Waqa Blake (Panthers)

Turned the clash with the Titans on its head with a 70-metre solo try against the run of play and then scored a second to kick-start Penrith's point-scoring blitz, finishing with a total of 199 run metres and four tackle busts.

4. James Roberts (Broncos)

Tore a Bulldogs defence that was tiring midway through the second half to shreds with a spectacular individual four-pointer and then sealed the 42-12 win with a try right on the buzzer. Had six tackle busts, two line breaks and 170m.

5. Gerard Beale (Sharks)

The Sharks' back five were integral in Cronulla's win over the Rabbitohs on Friday night and Beale was outstanding, running for 156 metres and capping it off with a well-deserved try in the 70th minute.

6. Gareth Widdop (Dragons)

With opposite Blake Green rested Widdop took the opportunity to take the game by the scruff of the neck, laying on two tries and giving his 172 run metres a significant boost with a 90-metre intercept that put the Dragons away on their 30-point first half.

7. Nathan Cleary (Panthers)

It paled in comparison to his Warriors master class a week earlier but when the game needed to be won Nathan Cleary stepped up and dragged the Panthers across the line and in so doing keep their finals hopes alive.

8. Leeson Ah Mau (Dragons)

Against a Manly forward pack that has bulldozed plenty in 2017 the Dragons needed their big men to step up and none made more of an impact than Ah Mau who rumbled forward for 175 metres from just 12 carries.

9. Andrew McCullough (Broncos)

Continues to show his growing attacking prowess, sparking Brisbane's first try with a clean line-break from well inside his own half and then setting up one for Josh McGuire in the second half with a clever kick into the Bulldogs' in-goal.

10. Jesse Bromwich (Storm)

Big showing from the Melbourne front-rower, particularly given the loss of both Cameron Smith and Billy Slater. Ran for 160 metres and made 30 tackles in 56 minutes of game time.

11. Matt Gillett (Broncos)

Refreshed after a week off Gillett threatened to bust through the Bulldogs' left edge defence all night, playing a key role in the try for Jordan Kahu just prior to half-time, making 148 metres and 34 bone-rattling tackles.

12. Dale Finucane (Storm)

Got the Storm started in the right fashion with a try in the opening six minutes and then scored his second 11 minutes from full-time to give his side decimated by injuries a handy buffer that ultimately proved the difference.

13. Jack de Belin (Dragons)

Another monster statistical output for the Dragons lock forward with 251 run metres and 30 tackles in a 76-minute performance.

14. Wade Graham (Sharks)

Enjoyed the return of James Maloney with a try inside three minutes and threatened to cause more issues for the Souths' right-edge defence all night. Ran for 123 metres and made 22 tackles.

15. Reagan Campbell-Gillard (Panthers)

Named in the starting team but pushed to the bench for the second week in succession, Campbell-Gillard once again changed the tempo of the game when introduced, coming on after just 20 minutes and racking up 181m and 28 tackles.

16. Gavin Cooper (Cowboys)

Helping to make Te Maire Martin's transition into the North Queensland team seamless with another solid performance on the Cowboys' left edge.

17. Simon Mannering (Warriors)

Typically courageous performance from the stand-in Warriors skipper, scoring a try, racking up 54 tackles and running for 133 metres in his side's narrow loss to the Cowboys.

Dufty puts hand up to fill Dugan void in 2018

OFF TO A FLYER: Dragons young-gun Matt Dufty scored a try and laid on two others on debut against Manly on Sunday. Picture: AAP

IT’S likely to be a one-off this season, but Dragons young-gun Matt Dufty may have struck the first blow in the battle to replace the departing Josh Dugan in 2018 with a stand-out performance on debut against Manly on Sunday.

Dufty produced a try and two try assists while running for 194 metres and busting 11 tackles in a memorable first NRL start after Dugan was a late scratching with a hamstring injury.

Dugan brought a drawn-out saga surrounding his future to an end prior to State of Origin I, signing with Cronulla on a four-year deal after finding himself at odds with Dragons recruitment chief Ian Millward over his best position.

Millward has indicated the club will look in-house to fill the vacant No.1 in 2018. It will likely pit Dufty in a battle with fellow youngster Jai Field next season, while recently re-signed utility Kurt Mann will also figure.

Coach Paul McGregor confirmed that Dugan will be back for this weekend’s clash with Newcastle but was pleased to see one of the club’s juniors stake a long-term claim.

“We had to replace Duges so it was a good opportunity to give the kid a chance when we had most of our experienced players available,” McGregor said.

“Duft’s works really had at his game in reserve grade and at training to deserve a start. At the moment we’ll just take it week to week but I think [Sunday] was a good sign for him and a good sign for us.”

Dufty, who was only told on Thursday that he would get his first start, described the build-up and the match itself as “a blur.”

“The game from zero to 80 went so quickly and I’m just so grateful for the opportunity Mary gave me,” Dufty said.

“I knew earlier in the week that Duges was in a bit of doubt but I only found out on Thursday he wasn’t going to play and Mary told me he was going to give me a start.

“We a had a day off after he told me so I was feeling pretty good but then I got here for captain’s run and saw the field all marked out and I got really nervous.

“I couldn’t sleep [Saturday] night and I was so nervous when I got here but Duges came up to me and said ‘take a breath, just play your game’ and that really calmed me down and set me on the right path.

“It was a dream start. It wasn’t as big a step up as I thought it was going to be but it was still the hardest and fastest game I’ve ever played. I don’t know if it was adrenaline but I just loved it.”

Dufty admits he does have long-term designs on the club’s No.1 jumper but insisted he didn’t treat Sunday’s clash as an audition.

“It’s not really on my mind yet,” Dufty said.

“When I start focusing on other things outside of footy, like what’s going to happen next year, I tend to lose track of what I’ve got to do in the game.

“Next year it’ll probably be my main goal but Duges is there this year and he’s a world class player.

“I’m just going to learn as much as I can off him. He’s one of the best competitors in the game which is something I really look up to.”

Apps, Bremner crucial in NSW women's win
Mon 24th July, 03:00PM
A A

By Jesse Godfrey

The New South Wales Women’s side have claimed the Nellie Doherty Cup for the second-straight year after defeating Queensland 22-6 in the Interstate Challenge at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Sunday afternoon.

NSW made the most of their first opportunity with a lovely cut out pass from fullback and Dragons Ambassador Sam Bremner to send 19-year-old debutant Jessica Sergis over for the first try.

A Caitlin Moran cross-field kick was swooped on by Sergis soon after, who crossed for her second try in just 11 minutes.

Queensland were on the board come the 22nd minute when centre Jenni-Sue Hoepper beat four defenders to score.

That’s how the scores remained until the halftime interval with NSW holding a narrow four-point lead.

Early in the second half, Bremner went down for the second time in the game and was assisted off the field with an apparent ankle injury.

It didn't stop the Blues onslaught however as a beautiful cross-field kick from halfback Maddie Studdon was swooped upon by Corban McGregor who touched down in the corner.

A nice flick pass from Moran set up Vanessa Foliaki in the 57th minute after she found some room out wide to crash over.

Moran was in the thick of the action again when she linked up with Sergis who went over in the corner to claim her hat-trick and round out the Blues' 16-point win.

Dragons Ambassador and New South Wales back-rower Kezie Apps was awarded Player of the Match at game's end.

New South Wales 22 (Jessica Sergis 3, Vanessa Foliaki, Corban McGregor tries, Caitlin Moran 1 goal) defeated Queensland 6 (Jenni-Sue Hoepper try, Chelsea Baker 1 goal) at WIN Stadium, Wollongong. Half-time: NSW 10-6.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor eyes Matt Dufty as Josh Dugan replacement

No stopping him: Penshurst RSL junior Matt Dufty scored a try on his NRL debut as St George Illawarra thrashed Manly on Sunday. Picture: Craig Golding/AAP

It was a glimpse into the future that would have had St George Illawarra fans breathing a sigh of relief.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor has had a large problem for next season, trying to fill the Josh Dugan-sized hole at fullback after the representative No.1 decided to leave the club to join fierce local rivals Cronulla.

If Sunday’s evidence is anything to go by, the answer might be found in-house.

Penshurst RSL junior Matt Dufty produced an outstanding NRL debut for the Dragons, scoring a try and setting up two others as St George Illawarra thrashed the high-flying Sea Eagles 52-22.

McGregor said Dugan would return from his hamstring strain against the struggling Knights in Newcastle on Saturday. But with Euan Aitken in doubt after hurting his shoulder scoring his second try against Manly, it’s possible 21-year-old Dufty’s performance was good enough to keep him in the side for good.

“I think it’s a good opportunity. We haven’t replaced Duges [for next season],” McGregor said.

“It’s a good opportunity to give the kids an opportunity when we’ve got most of our players available. With Josh going out there was a position there.

“Duff’s worked really hard at his game in reserve grade and at training to deserve a start. We’ll just play it at the moment week to week. [Against Manly] was a good sign for him and a good sign for us.”

Dufty was a Holden Cup star with the Dragons, scoring 54 tries in 65 games in the under-20s with many coming through his electric speed and elusiveness. He is the third former Dragons under-20s player to graduate to first grade this season.

“That’s a nice pathway for the young blokes,” McGregor said.

“We had a lot of experience [against Manly] so it was a good time for him to make his debut at home on a nice afternoon with a home crowd.

“He showed what he’s got. He’s got ability to burn people with his speed. He’s got a really nice catch and pass. His strength there is a little bit [deceptive] because he’s so quick he can get away from people so he can use his natural strength. I thought that it was a real solid debut, to be honest.”

Home is where the heart is for Pereira
Nathan Beuman

St George Illawarra Dragons utility back Jordan Pereira says he couldn’t be happier with his recent mid-season move to Wollongong.

Pereira, who is now in his third week at the Dragons, said that while he had always hoped of playing on the big stage, the move south all came as a surprise.

"I only found out [I had a deal with the Dragons] with a couple of days' notice," Pereira said.

"I signed with a manager and then a week later he said 'I have a contract for you down in Wollongong if you are keen' which obviously came as a shock."

The 24-year-old Wellington native is only in his fourth season playing rugby league after picking up the sport while living in Perth.

From there he linked up with the Mackay Cutters where he has spent the past few seasons plying his trade in the Intrust Super Cup.

"Wherever me and my partner go, we sort of just make a home for ourselves and call that home," Pereira said.

"I’ve made a lot of extended family friends over the years and have sort of been an honorary member of a lot of them.

"Everywhere I go I’ve had a lot of good people around me which makes everything a lot easier."

While Pereira is happy to ply his trade with Illawarra in the Intrust Super Premiership, he admits that donning the Red V jumper is his ultimate goal.

"If anyone says that [playing in the NRL] isn’t their goal then they are lying," Pereira said.

"That’s obviously the main reason I am here.

"You want to do what you can to push for a top grade spot, but obviously that starts with ripping in down in reserve grade."

Hull and Wigan head down under for 2018 opener
Hull FC media release | July 26 2017 8:44PM

Hull FC are pleased to announce in partnership with Wigan Warriorsand Super League Europe, the playing of the first ever Betfred Super League fixture outside Europe at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Saturday 10 February 2018.

World Club Champions Wigan Warriors, with the support of and Ladbrokes Challenge Cup holders Hull FC, have entered into an official Tourism and Destination Partnership with the New South Wales Government in order to facilitate a three-match tour of Australia in February 2018 by Super League clubs, Wigan Warriors and Hull FC.

Hull FC and Wigan Warriors will compete in an official Super League fixture in Wollongong when Wigan take their home game to WIN Stadium on 10th February 2018. The following week, the two English clubs will then take part in the first ever double-header games between Super League and NRL teams at a single venue when Hull FC face St George Illawarra Dragons and Wigan play South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium, Sydney on Saturday 17 February, 2018.

Hull FC and Wigan Warriors will both return to the UK to participate in the World Club Challenge or Series on the weekend of 24/25 February, should either team qualify.

The tour with the support of strategic sponsors of the visit, Destination NSW and Destination Wollongong, will make a significant contribution to the New South Wales economy both in Sydney and in the region of Wollongong.

New South Wales Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Adam Marshall, said: "Australia is mad for rugby league and I am thrilled the NSW Government has secured these exclusive matches for Sydney and Wollongong which will drive visitors to both areas. "The two Super League sides will spend two weeks in the State with the three-match tour expected to attract close to 5,000 interstate and overseas visitors to NSW, injecting more than $7 million into the local visitor economy. "We have a stellar line-up of rugby league events already scheduled in NSW, with this tour following the 2017 NRL Grand Final in October and Women's Rugby League World Cup in November and joining Game II of the State of Origin series in the 2018 major events calendar." Hull FC Chairman, Adam Pearson, said:

"This is a landmark occasion for the sport of rugby league and an opportunity for Hull FC to play our part in making Super League history.

"Two of the competitions most high profile and best supported clubs will have the opportunity to promote Super League on a global scale, as well as developing solid and long-term international links with tourism stakeholders in New South Wales and Wollongong, another heartland of rugby league.

"We would like to thank the key stakeholders involved and Wigan Warriors for their ambition and forethought in delivering such a unique festival of sport and look forward to making this event a huge success. This is something our fans, our club and the Super League competition can be very proud of.

"There will be a great deal of excitement from fans of both clubs and we're sure many will want to travel to New South Wales for such an historic occasion, support their team and help showcase all that is good about rugby league in the UK."

Wigan Warriors Chairman, Ian Lenagan, commented:

"This announcement is one of the most innovative and exciting in the history of Wigan Rugby League Club. Director, Kris Radlinski, together with Commercial Sales Manager, Dan Burton, has been in negotiations with key stakeholders both in Australia and the UK over the last 12 months, delicately pulling together this complex agreement.

"The opportunities to create new and increased core business from sponsorships and partnerships together with Wigan brand development, the increased profile with NRL players and opportunity for our fans makes this the biggest single commercial contract in the history of the Club.

"The Wigan fans are famed for their loyal support as shown when a huge army of supporters travelled to Sydney for the World Club Challenge game with Sydney Roosters in 2014. We firmly believe that the Wigan and Hull fans will be as excited about this venture as we are and we have announced early to allow fans the chance to plan their trip to Australia and, at the same time, to provide clarity on the number of home games for the 2018 season before Season Ticket packages are launched later this year."

Destination Wollongong General Manager Mark Sleigh said today's announcement came with a nice link, given Wollongong's Deputy Lord Mayor John Dorahy coached the Warriors to Challenge Cup and first division glory in 1993/94.

"There are genuine links between Wigan and Wollongong and at the core of this partnership is the fact it represents two passionate and successful rugby league heartlands," he said. "Announcing a significant international event as part of our ever-growing major events portfolio is a coup for the region."

"Wollongong's love of rugby league is a defining aspect of our sporting culture and to have a giant of the international game making Wollongong its home is a wonderful opportunity. The last time Wigan came to Australia, they brought with them a touring party of 4500 fans, so the overnight visitation will be significant, with pre and post touring options planned to showcase the region's attractions during the English winter."

Rugby Football League Chief Commercial Officer and Super League Executive Director, Roger Draper, said:

"Featuring two of the biggest Rugby League teams in the British game, Wigan Warriors have worked extremely hard in partnership with the New South Wales Government to create history for our game by hosting what will be the first-ever game outside of Europe while engaging an international fanbase, showcasing the vital role sport plays in the global economy and growing the Betfred Super League brand."

Tickets and travel packages for both games will go on sale at the end of August with 5,000 UK fans expected to travel with the teams.

Wigan Warriors and Hull FC in Sydney and Wollongong, 2018, is brought to you by Destination New South Wales and Destination Wollongong.

Hull FC would like to thank all stakeholders involved in this project

ST GEORGE Illawarra prop Paul Vaughan says the Dragons still have their sights set on a top four finish after re-igniting their season with a 30-point flogging of Manly on Sunday.

It was a return to the form that saw the Dragons well entrenched in the top four after nines rounds before hitting some mid-season wobbles.

Just three wins in 10 games saw the Dragons hovering on the edge of the top eight heading into the clash with the Sea Eagles, with the win giving them a two-point buffer from ninth-placed Penrith.

Only Melbourne, Brisbane and Cronulla have better points differentials than the Dragons. With winnable games against the Knight, Rabbitohs and Titans in the next three weeks, a climb back into the top four is not inconceivable – certainly not to Vaughan.

“The table’s pretty congested and I think we’re only a couple of points out of the top four,” Vaughan said.

“It’s obviously our goal to get there and we’re a good enough team to be there. We’ve just got to get the games together and have a good run into the finals.

“I’ve said before, you’d be naive to think you’ll go through a season near perfect. I think we were playing such good footy at the start of the season that people thought we were in a bit of a rut and looking back we probably were.

“It’s not something we talk about a whole lot in-house, we’re more just looking towards the next week.

“It’s a cliche but that’s what we have to do because we can’t be looking too far into the future. We’re not safe to make the finals yet but, if we build some consistency and string some games together, we should be sweet.”

Vaughan was one of five Dragons forwards to run for over a hundred metres against the Sea Eagles, with lock Jack de Belin racking up a stunning 251 from 27 carries.

It was a return to the power game that spurred their strong start to season and Vaughan said it’s something his side will look to build on against Newcastle this week.

“At the start of the season we were rolling through teams through the middle pretty comfortably,” Vaughan said.

“I think we might have been going out the back a little bit and playing to the edges a little bit too much in that period when we weren’t winning games.

“I think it started for us again against Canberra [in round 19] wherewe got back to our power running. We know what works for us and the last couple of weeks have been that style of play.”

St George Illawarra Head of Athletic Performance Nathan Pickworth has provided the following update on the health of Dragons centre Euan Aitken.

Aitken suffered a subluxation of the shoulder in the Dragons' 52-22 win over the Sea Eagles at WIN Stadium, Wollongong last weekend.

"Upon consultation with a shoulder specialist it was determined that the best course of action for Euan Aitken's shoulder injury is conservative management with the hope that he may be able to return to play this season," Pickworth said.

"As the injury progresses a decision will be made regarding the need for off-season surgery."

Dragons welcome 2018 UK Super League visit

St George Illawarra have welcomed the Wigan Warriors' announcement, in partnership with the Super League and Hull FC, that the first ever Super League game to be played outside of Europe will take place at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on February 10, 2018.

Wigan have entered into an oofficial Tourism and Destination Partnership with the New South Wales Government via tourism agencies Destination NSW and Destination Wollongong in order to facilitate a two-match tour of Australia also involving Hull FC.

Wigan and Hull FC will meet in an official Super League fixture to be played in WIN Stadium, Wollongong when Wigan take their home game to WIN Stadium on February 10.

The following week the two UK-based clubs will take part in the first ever double header between Super League and NRL teams at a single venue when the Dragons take on Hull FC and South Sydney face Wigan at ANZ Stadium on February 17, 2018.

The visit of the Super League teams will make a significant contribution to the NSW economy, both in Sydney and the region of Wollongong, and drive significant international and interstate visitation to the state.

New South Wales Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said he was excited by the prospects of Wigan and Hull FC's visit.

"Australia is mad for rugby league and I am thrilled the NSW Government has secured these exclusive matches for Sydney and Wollongong, which will drive visitors to both areas," Marshall said.

"The two Super League sides will spend two weeks in the state with the three-match tour expected to attract close to 5000 interstate and overseas visitors to NSW, injecting more than $7 million into the local visitor economy."

Wigan Warriors Chairman Ian Lenagan said the announcement was cause for plenty of excitement.

"This announcement is one of the most innovative and exciting in the history of Wigan Rugby League Club," Lenagan said.

"Representatives from Wigan have been in negotiations with a number of key stakeholders both in Australia and the UK over the last 12 months delicately pulling together this complex agreement.

"The Wigan fans are famed for their loyal support as shown when a huge army of supporters travelled to Sydney for the World Club Challenge game with Sydney Roosters in 2014.

"We firmly believe that the Wigan and Hull fans will be as excited about this venture as we are and we have announced early to allow fans the chance to plan their trip to Australia."

Destination Wollongong General Manager Mark Sleigh said the announcement came with a nice link, given Wollongong’s Deputy Lord Mayor John Dorahy coached the Warriors to Challenge Cup and first division glory in 1993-94.

"There are genuine links between Wigan and Wollongong and at the core of this partnership is the fact it represents two passionate and successful rugby league heartlands," Sleigh said.

"Announcing a significant international event as part of our ever-growing major events portfolio is a coup for the region."

"Wollongong’s love of rugby league is a defining aspect of our sporting culture and to have a giant of the international game making Wollongong its home is a wonderful opportunity.

"The last time Wigan came to Australia, they brought with them a touring party of 4500 fans, so the overnight visitation will be significant, with pre and post touring options planned to showcase the region’s attractions during the English winter."

St George Illawarra Dragons Chief Executive Peter Doust welcomed the initiative.

"The Dragons look forward to welcoming both Wigan Warriors and Hull FC to the Illawarra, and with an anticipated 5000 international and interstate visitors converging on Wollongong we are sure the community will embrace the opportunity," Doust said.

"It's the community's chance to experience the unique atmosphere generated at the first Super League game to be played outside Europe.

"The Dragons will be working alongside both Super League teams while they are in our region on a range of activities that will benefit the local community and continue to strengthen Rugby League.

"We are also excited to be participating in the first ever international double header against Hull FC at ANZ Stadium the following weekend."

Tickets and travel packages for both games will go on sale at the end of August with well over 5000 UK fans expected to travel with the teams.

Dragons Red V Members will be provided with an exclusive window to pre-purchase tickets to both events before they go on public sale.

These details will be communicated directly to members.

Dugan returns in potent Dragons backline

BIG IN: Test and Origin centre Josh Dugan will return from a hamstring injury against Newcastle on Saturday with Matt Dufty remaining at fullback. Picture: Sylvia Liber

DRAGONS centre Tim Lafai is excited by the prospect of a backline featuring both Josh Dugan and livewire rookie Matt Dufty after the latter produced a stunning debut against Manly last week.

Dugan, still nursing the rigours of another Origin series, was absent from the clash with a hamstring injury opening the door for 21-year-old Dufty’s first NRL start.

He made the most of it with two try assists and a try to go with 194 running metres. It was enough for him to retain the No. 1 jumper for Saturday’s clash with Newcastle with Dugan returning in the centres to cover for the injured Euan Aitken.

Lafai, who is the club leader for linebreaks this season, said the shift makes the already potent Dragons backline even more formidable.

“Matt Dufty had an awesome game last week,” Lafai said.

“I thought it was the most perfect debut any kid can ask for, scoring a try and enjoying it out there in front of his home fans. He brings a lot to the team and that’s the reason he’s got that position.

He’s a great ball-player, he’s got great speed and his decision making is good so he’s got all the right things you need in a fullback.

“It’s awesome to have big Duges back as well and him playing in the centres will definitely give the team a boost. He’s obviously been playing there in Origin and for Australia and he’s excited to be back in the team.”

Lafai said it was good to blow off some attacking cobwebs with a 52-point performance.

It was a good team effort out there and one that we needed coming off two losses. It’s good for momentum going into this week,” he said.

DRAGONS centre Euan Aitken’s luckless 2017 continues with the 22-year-old looking at an extended stint on the sidelines after picking up a shoulder injury whilst scoring a try against Manly on Sunday.

Aitken has scored six tries in just 11 appearance this season but has been limited by ongoing hamstring problems. His shoulder injury adds to that frustration.

"Upon consultation with a shoulder specialist it was determined that the best course of action for Euan’s shoulder injury is conservative management with the hope that he may be able to return to play this season," the club’s head of performance Nathan Pickworth said.

Coach Paul McGregor said he felt for Aitken who’s missed his fair share of football this season.

“He’s missed a lot footy this year with his hamstring tendon,” McGregor said.

“He came back and missed another game last week and then came back [against Manly] and did his shoulder so it’s been a tough run for the young man.”

Widdop stars on debut

Matt Dufty wasn't the only exciting young Dragon to make his debut in St George Illawarra's 52-22 win over the Manly Sea Eagles last weekend.

Brayden Widdop made the step up into the big time and didn't disappoint.

The son of Dragons skipper Gareth ran the kicking tee out to his dad for the first time, and proved quite the lucky charm.

Gareth managed to kick eight goals from nine attempts and won man-of-the-match honours against the Sea Eagles, as young Brayden watched on closely by.

Dugan shift a logical step for McGregor

TEAM FIRST: St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor says shifting Josh Dugan to right centre this week was the best fit for the team in the absence of the injured Euan Aitken. Picture: Sylvia Liber

IT’S been labeled a “backflip” in some quarters but St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor insists Josh Dugan’s shift to the centres this week is simply the best fit for his side in absence of the injured Euan Aitken.

Dugan was absent from the Dragons win over Manly last week with a minor hamstring complaint, opening the door for young-gun Matt Dufty to star on debut.

It was expected to be a one-off before Aitken injured his shoulder scoring the second of two tries against the Sea Eagles.

It’s expected to sideline the 22-year-old for two to four weeks and McGregor said moving Dugan, the incumbent Australia and NSW right centre, was the logical replacement for Saturday’s clash with Newcastle.

“For this week it was purely team motivated rather than self-motivated for anyone,” McGregor said.

“Josh missed last week and Duft got his opportunity at fullback. Now we’ve lost Euan who’s a right centre and a big part of our team.

“Duft's was a solid performance last week, we can all agree on that, but with Euan out it makes sense Josh going there with his experience.

“Josh is a world class player, he’s the current NSW and Australian right centre so he was a likely replacement for such an important player that Euan is.”

Dugan will leave the Dragons at season’s end to take up a four-year deal with arch-rivals Cronulla. His objection to being pigeon-holed as a centre, despite playing most of his club career at fullback, played no small role in his departure.

McGregor has strenuously backed Dugan as the club’s best No. 1, but said he’s not looking to the future in selecting him and Dufty in the same 17.

“Next year’s next year, at the moment it’s really about what we need to win a game of footy and the best fit this week,” McGregor said.

“Euan’s going to get back on the field, he’s working hard with his injury. He’ll probably need surgery at the end of year but, as we know in the NRL, everyone’s busted at this stage of the year.

“It’s just about working hard on the rehab and giving yourself every opportunity and it looks like he’ll be back in a couple of weeks. When he does get back on the field we’ll make a decision then and it’ll be on form.”

Dugan and Dufty will be key men in a backline that re-found it’s groove to the tune of 52 points against the Sea Eagles last week.

It was a return to good attacking form but it was an early second-half defensive lapse, in which his side conceded 22 points, that grabbed most of McGregor’s attention.

A similar lapse saw the Dragons trail Newcastle 28-10 at halftime when they last met in round 16 and McGregor said his side will be looking for a more complete effort this week.

“It was nice to break 50 against a quality side in Manly last week but now we’re looking for an 80-minute complete performance,” he said.

“You play against teams in the NRL you relax for a short term and you can get points put on you.

“We had 15-minute window there where Manly came back at us pretty hard and we leaked a few points so its about improving that period and playing for 80 minutes.

“It was really a 15-minute period against the Knights last time and the same against Manly last week but, the good thing about it is, we came out the other end in both games.”

The Dragons can strengthen their hold on a top eight spot with a win over Newcastle after ninth-placed Penrith drew level with them on 24 competition points with Thursday’s win over Canterbury.

It makes the Dragons part of a five-team logjam for the bottom four play-off spots, but McGregor says his side won’t fall into the trap of ladder-gazing.

“It’d be nice if a couple of teams do knock off Penrith along the way, and some of the other teams thereabouts with us, but for us it’s just about making sure we improve on what we did last week,” McGregor said.

“If you start worrying how other results are going to go you get away from the focus you need which is for us to go out there play good footy and get a result.

“We are in the eight and we know where we are sitting in the eight. We hold the key there, no one else. It’s about what we need to do to go out there and get the results we know we can, after that everything else will look after itself.”
