Ashes Mafia Game Thread

So basically, what I wanted to do with the design of the game was force the town to rely on their lynch assisted by the writeups and many investigators who would receive pieces of the puzzle, rather than power rolesbut unfortunately with many, many no votes it didn't pan out that way. The town rather just stayed pretty inactive, which was disappointed. I take partial responsibilty for that as the mod, but there is also onus on the player to get involved and the mafia to their credit really controlled the action. I'd disagree with any who thought the writeup didn't have enough hints, it's just nobody seemed to want to sniff them out with an investigator coming forward.

Town had 4 investigators, lots of protections and a part time killer who later became full time. If I could start again, I would have created some post conditions to force some activity and added a few one shot kills, to cover in case lynches didn't go through. Unluckily for the town, their investigatos kept getting unlucky. BDR went night one, and the others often targetted players who were killed or outed that night phase.

Soc is the MVP for mine. Played the townies very well and always chose good targets for kills.

I apologise for this game being so long and drawn out, I honestly didn't intend it to end up that way. Hope some of you had fun though, lol.

Here are the role PMs, for any who are interested.

Town:
You are Ed Cowan, Ashes aligned Australian top order left-handed batsman

Tests: 17
Batting avg: 32.9
Strike rate: 41.45
Top score: 136
1 century

You are a pretty smart fella. According to the SMH, you have a commerce degree, written a warts-and-all diary about life as a cricketer, grow your own vegetables, immerse yourself in novels, and appreciate modern art and love music.

Favourite Shot– Forward Defensive (Night Action): Since you are such a smarty pants, you can see through the facades put up by other players. Nothing gets past you and your forward defensive shot. Each night you may select one player to investigate. You will learn their alignment. You must PM your night action.

Conditions can be tricky in England, and these conditions will affect your night action. On a FLAT pitch, you have a 25% chance of your investigation also revealing the character of your target. On a DUSTBOWL pitch, you have a 25% chance of your investigation result being incorrect.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Chris Rogers, Ashes aligned Australian top order left handed batsman

Tests: 1
Batting avg: 9.5
Strike rate: 70.37
Top score: 15
0 centuries

There cannot be much more to say about Chris Rogers. Rarely will you see a player so in-tune with his own game. He is not the type of player to bring you out of your seat, but more one that fluffs the cushions, covers you in a blanket and assures you that everything is going to be okay, before he goes about his business.

Favourite Shot – Backward Defensive (Passive): You have a very strong defensive game. You cannot be killed on odd nights.

Conditions can be tricky in England, and these conditions will affect your passive action. On a FLAT pitch, you can also not be killed on an even night. On a CRACKED pitch, you have a 25% chance of dying on an odd night.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Shane Watson, Ashes aligned Australian all-rounder

Tests: 41
Batting avg: 35.34
Batting strike rate: 49.74
Top score: 126
2 centuries

62 wickets @ 30.06
Bowling strike rate: 63.0
Economy: 2.86
Best figures: 6/51

You are the most talented cricketer since Bradman (according to yourself). When on song, you can be devastating, but you are known to be quite brittle and times as well as rather childish at others.

Bowl for your country (Night Action): When the conditions suit you, you may take up the ball and bowl for your country. You may target one player to bowl to, who you will attempt to kill. However, you will be rather sore after bowling for your country, and thus cannot post in the subsequent day phase. You can bowl for your country on GREEN and CRACKED pitches. You must PM your night action.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Michael Clarke, Ashes aligned Australian middle order right-handed batsman and captain

Tests: 92
Batting avg: 52.33
Strike rate: 55.81
Top score: 329*
23 centuries

You are really bloody good, and pretty much Australia’s only hope for this Ashes series. You have a chronic back condition caused by carrying the rest of the Australian side.

Captains Knock (Night Action): You’ve won matches off your own bat before, and this power will do it again. This power will protect all Ashes aligned Australian players from night death. It may only be used once. You must PM your night action.

First Picked (Passive Action): You are the first name on the team sheet every week. You cannot be killed or lynched while any other Australian batsmen remain alive.

The Toss (Day Action): When prompted, you must choose to bat or bowl first.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Phil Hughes, Ashes aligned Australian middle order left-handed batsman

Tests: 24
Batting avg: 33
Strike rate: 53.81
Top score: 160
3 centuries

If a textbook technique was the sole criterion for a first-class opener then you would be out of a job. But then, the same could have been said of the shuffling Simon Katich. The most important thing as far as Australia's selectors are concerned is that you pick up plenty of runs from your country-baked technique, which includes compulsive slicing through point and slashing to cover, as well as stepping away to provide room for tennis-style drives down the ground.

Favourite Shot – Cut (Night Action): On each night you may take it to the bowlers with a slash through the off side. Select one player and you will protect them from all night actions. You cannot protect yourself. You must PM your night action.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these conditions will affect your night action. On a FLAT pitch, you have a 50% chance of learning who targeted who you are protecting if they are targeted. On a GREEN pitch, you have a 50% chance of being outed as a protector if the person you are protecting is targeted.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Brad Haddin, Ashes aligned Australian middle order right-handed batsman

Tests: 44
Batting avg: 35.5
Strike rate: 57.35
Top score: 169
3 centuries

You may be comfortably the oldest wicketkeeper currently involved in Test cricket, but you believe his age and experience could be to his advantage on the upcoming Ashes tour. Recalled to the Test squad as vice-captain to Michael Clarke for the Ashes, you are set to breathe new life into your international career at 35, an age when Australian gloveman have typically been winding down towards retirement: Ian Healy played his last Test at 35 and Adam Gilchrist and Rod Marsh both retired at 36.

Vice Captains Call (Day Action): You have a lot of sway over the side now you have been named vice captain. When you vote in lynches, your votes will count for double.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these conditions will affect your day action. On a FLAT pitch, your votes will count for triple. On a CRACKED pitch, your votes will only count for one.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Peter Siddle, Ashes aligned Australian right arm fast-medium bowler

Tests: 41
150 wickets @ 28.84
Strike rate: 57.6
Economy: 3.00
Best figures: 9/104

Despite being a dirty Victorian, you are regarded by the real people of Australia as being a pretty good and likeable bloke. Hitting the deck hard back of a length, you are a classic Aussie paceman and have a lot of fans around the country.

Vegetarian Endurance (Passive Ability): You’ve got the heart of a lion now you’re a vego, you can bowl for days. It will take two efforts (either kills or lynches) to take out a workhorse like Peter Siddle.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these conditions will affect your passive action. On a GREEN pitch, any kill will not count towards your two efforts, unless you have already survived a kill, in which case the kill will eliminate you. On a FLAT pitch, a kill will eliminate you, even if you still have two lives left.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Nathan Lyon, Ashes aligned Australian right arm off-spinner

Tests: 22
76 wickets @ 33.18
Strike rate: 63.6
Economy: 3.12
Best figures: 9/165

A classical offspinner who flights the ball and looks for wickets, you were first chosen for the Test leg of the tour of Sri Lanka. You debuted in the first Test in Galle, and exceeded expectations, dismissing Kumar Sangakkara off his first delivery, and taking 5 for 34 in Sri Lanka's first innings. You are the best of an average bunch but can get the job done more often than not.

Favourite Delivery – Arm Ball (Even Night Action): After some handy off-breaks, on every even night you may select one player to bowl an arm ball to. You will re-direct the targeted players action to another random player. You must PM your night action.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these conditions will affect your night action. On a DUSTBOWL pitch, your re-direct has a 25% chance of killing its target. On a GREEN pitch, there is a 25% chance the targets action will be re-directed to yourself.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Alistair Cook, Ashes aligned English top order left-handed batsman and captain

Tests: 92
Avg: 49.17
Strike rate: 47.54
Top score: 294
25 centuries

You lead the Poms into battle against the Australians and like Michael Clarke, you are far and away the best bat in your side. You are the youngest player to pass 7000 test runs and England’s top century maker.

Captains Knock (Night Action): You’ve won matches off your own bat before, and this power will do it again. This power will protect all Ashes aligned English players from night death. It may only be used once. You must PM your night action.

First Picked (Passive Action): You are the first name on the team sheet every week. You cannot be killed or lynched while any other Ashes aligned English batsmen remain alive.

The Toss (Day Action): When prompted, you must choose to bat or bowl first.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Nick Compton, Ashes aligned English top order right-handed batsman

Tests: 9

Grandson of the legendary Denis, you don’t share your relation's ability to entertain with the bat but have made your own career as a top-order batsman with a very correct technique. Selected to open the batting for England after a prolific domestic season in 2012, you now have the chance to emulate some of your grandfather's international success.

Tactical discussion (Passive Action): You are allowed to communicate freely outside the game thread with Joe Root and Ian Bell, using however method you see fit. You MAY NOT invite other players to participate in these discussions.

Building A Partnership (Night Action): Once each night, either you, Joe Root (Sanchez) or Ian Bell (Bazzi) will be protected from all night actions. This is to be decided amongst yourselves, outside the game thread. Ian Bell (Bazzi) is in charge of sending a PM of the night action. If Ian Bell dies, either you or Joe Root may send the PM.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Johnathan Trott, Ashes aligned English top order right-handed batsman

Tests: 43
Avg: 50.01
Strike rate: 46.83
Top score: 226

You are a South African who plays for the Poms, so not a rare breed in that regard. However, you have a thirst for runs and have been a thorn in the side of opposition bowlers on many occasions with your monotonous style. You hold the record for most test runs without hitting a six.

Favourite Shot – Backward Defensive (Passive Action): You feel very comfortable just defending the bowler, waiting for the right ball. Because of this defensive staunchness, you cannot be killed on even nights.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these will affect your passive action. On a FLAT pitch, you can also not be killed on an odd night. On a CRACKED pitch, you have a 25% chance of dying on an even night.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Ian Bell, Ashes aligned English middle order right-handed batsman

Tests: 88
Avg: 45.57
Strike rate: 49.56
Top score: 235

Technically sound, you are a batsman very much in the mould of Michael Atherton, who was burdened with similar expectations when he made his England debut a generation ago. Unlike Atherton, who invariably produced his best when his back was firmly against the wall, your most fluent early efforts tended to come about in a pressure vacuum, a trait that belied an average hovering around the 40 mark, and a record of a century every five or so Tests.

Tactical discussion (Passive Action): You are allowed to communicate freely outside the game thread with Joe Root (Sanchez) and Nick Compton (Non Terminator), using however method you see fit. You MAY NOT invite other players to participate in these discussions.

Building A Partnership (Night Action): Once each night, either you, Joe Root or Nick Compton will be protected from all night actions. This is to be decided amongst yourselves, outside the game thread. You are in charge of sending a PM of the night action. If you dies, either you or Joe Root may send the PM.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Joe Root, Ashes aligned English middle order right-handed batsman

Tests: 6
Avg: 42.4
Strike rate: 104
Top score: 42.57

Your Test debut for England in Nagpur in 2012 exemplified the qualities which had attracted coaches from an early age. You began with England's sixth-longest debut innings in terms of balls faced, 73 from 229 balls as you displayed the patience and discrimination demanded both by the situation of the game and a desperately slow surface.

Tactical discussion (Passive Action): You are allowed to communicate freely outside the game thread with Ian Bell (Bazzi) and Nick Compton (Non Terminator), using however method you see fit. You MAY NOT invite other players to participate in these discussions.

Building A Partnership (Night Action): Once each night, either you, Nick Compton or Ian Bell will be protected from all night actions. This is to be decided amongst yourselves, outside the game thread. Ian Bell (Bazzi) is in charge of sending a PM of the night action. If Ian Bell dies, either you or Nick Compton may send the PM.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Matt Prior, Ashes aligned English wicket-keeper/right-handed batsman

Tests: 67
Avg: 44.33
Strike rate: 63
Top score: 133*
7 centuries
189 catches and 13 stumpings

A dashing lower-order hitter and skilled wicketkeeper standing back, like many South African players, you are a crucial part of England’s chances to retain the Ashes.

Wickie Vision (Day Action): From your vantage point behind the stumps, you can survey the field very well. During a day phase, you may call a census and reveal the factions at play and the number of players belonging to each faction. You must PM your day action. This is an ability that can only be used on ONE occasion.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Graeme Swann, Ashes aligned English right-arm off spinner

Tests: 52

Strike rate: 58.5
Economy: 2.91
Best figures: 10/132

You are an attacking spinner, generally delivering the ball with a lot of flight and bounce. You’ve overcome an elbow niggle to take your place in the English side and will be very important to their side.

Favourite Delivery – Top spinner (Odd Night Action): After some handy off-breaks, on every odd night you may select one player you bowl a top spinner to. You will re-direct the targeted players action to another random player.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these will affect your night action.

You are James Anderson, Ashes aligned English right arm fast medium bowler

Tests: 82
307 wickets @ 30.14
Strike rate: 58.5
Economy: 3.08
Best figures: 11/71

You are one of the finest bowlers going around in world cricket at the moment, and the spearhead of the English pace attack. On your day you can swing the ball viciously and demolish batting lineups as fragile as Australia’s.

Favourite Delivery – Late Swing (Night Action): Each night, you may target one player. Your late swinging ball will catch them off-guard and they will mistime their shot, revealing to you their character. You must PM your night action.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these will affect your night action. On a GREEN pitch, you have a 25% chance to additionally learn who their character targeted. On a FLAT pitch, you have a 25% chance to receive an incorrect result.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Stuart Broad, Ashes aligned English right arm fast-medium bowler

Tests: 57
195 wickets @ 30.93
Strike rate: 60.5
Economy: 3.06
Best figures: 11/165

You have the Ashes pedigree to really trouble the Australians. With your blond hair and baby-faced good looks, you were already shaping up as the Next Big Thing of English cricket when you pushed your career into overdrive in a sensational spell of bowling in the fifth and decisive Ashes Test at The Oval in 2009. With the series in the balance, you claimed figures of 5 for 37 in 12 overs, including 4 for 8 in 21 balls, and after that there was no coming back for Australia.

Favourite Delivery – Slower ball (Night Action): Each night, you may target one player. Your ball will cause them to mistime their shot and you will learn their ability. You must PM your night action.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these will affect your night action. On a GREEN pitch, you have a 25% chance to additionally learn your targets character. On a FLAT pitch, you have a 25% chance to receive an incorrect investigation result.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Steven Finn, Ashes aligned English right arm fast-medium bowler

Tests: 22
88 wickets @ 28.73
Strike rate: 47.7
Economy: 3.61
Best figures: 9/187

Standing at 6' 7'', you are the latest bean-pole fast bowler to carry England's hopes. Pinging the ball down from the clouds you have the heady blend of pace and trampolining bounce to rattle the best players.

Favourite Delivery – Bouncer (Night Action): Each night, you may target one player. Your ball will cause them to duck from fear and accidentally utter some vulgarities, which will reveal to you who they targeted that night phase. You must PM your night action.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these will affect your night action. On a CRACKED pitch, you have a 25% chance to additionally learn your targets ability. On a FLAT pitch, there is a 25% chance you will receive an incorrect investigation result.

Win Condition: You win when all threats to the Ashes are eliminated and at least one Ashes aligned player remains.

You are Shane Warne, Victoria aligned spin king
Tests: 145
708 wickets @ 25.41
Strike rate: 57.4
Economy: 2.65
Best figures: 12/128

You are the legendary S. K. Warne and you have a new vision for cricket. But nobody from Cricket Australia will give crazy uncle Warney the time of day. So you want to break away from the rest of Australia and create a new cricketing juggernaut – your home state of Victoria. You have enlisted the help of Kevin Pietersen (Jason Maher), James Pattinson (soc123_au), James Faulkner (BunniesMan), Monty Panesar (whall15) and Glenn Maxwell (StGeorgeBull) to eliminate the English and Australians and build your Victorian dream. You may freely communicate with these players outside the game thread.

Colour Commentary (Passive Action): You are up in the commentary box during play, and thus cannot be killed during night phases.

Spin King (Night Action): You are the king of spin with both ball and word. Each night phase, you must tell me something you wish Warney to say in the writeup as part of his commentary duties. This can be whatever you like, however in some cases I may slightly alter the message to fit it in with the theme and style of the writeup (can’t just have Warney yelling ‘x player is mafia and tried to kill me’). So I recommend you just tell me ‘insinuate x player has y role/alignment/power’ or something to that effect in case I change what you really wanted your message to do. Basically, you get to plant one false hint in the writeup. You must PM this night action.

Factional Kill (Night Action): You are in charge of who is targeted with Victoria’s factional kill and which player performs it. When you die, the factional kill is decided amongst the remaining players. You must PM this night action.

Win Condition: You win when every enemy to Victoria is eliminated.

You are James Pattinson, Victoria aligned right-arm fast medium bowler

Tests: 10
40 wickets @ 23.37
Strike rate: 43.2
Economy: 3.24
Best figures: 8/105

You are the spearhead of the Aussie pace attack and a massive coup for S.K. Warne. Fast and fiery, your Victorian heritage has driven you to support Warney in his evil plan. You are fighting for Victoria alongside Shane Warne (Ozzy), Kevin Pietersen (Jason Maher), James Faulkner (BunniesMan), Glenn Maxwell (StGeorgeBull) and Monty Panesar (whall15). You may freely communicate with these players outside the game thread.

Favourite Delivery – Beamer (Night Action): These bad boys are banned for a reason, but that isn’t going to stop you. Each night, you may choose one player to target with your beamer. This player will be killed. You must PM your night action.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these conditions will affect your night action. On a CRACKED pitch, you receive a second kill. The effectiveness of this kill will be dependent on the batting skill of the target. On a FLAT pitch, the effectiveness of your kill will be dependent on the batting skill of the target.

Win Condition: You win when every enemy to Victoria is eliminated.

You are Glenn Maxwell, Victoria aligned all-rounder

Tests: 2
Batting avg: 9.75
Batting strike rate: 52.7

You have got all the toys, all the tricks, all the skill and are the savior of Aussie cricket. And they STILL won’t give you the captaincy. But Warney recognises your talent and he’s recruited you to be the star of his new Victorian dynasty. You are aligned to Victoria alongside Shane Warne (Ozzy), James Pattinson (soc123_au), Kevin Pietersen (Jason Maher), Monty Panesar (whall15) and James Faulkner (BunniesMan). You may freely communicate with these players outside the game thread.

All The Toys: You have all the toys, as I mentioned before. You can use each of these actions only once.

The Full Toss (Night Action): The batsmen can’t believe what a juicy pie you’ve tossed up. He is forced into voting for a player of your choice in the next day’s lynch.

The Slog (Night Action): Somehow you’ve managed to connect with one of your baseball swings. The ball flies to the boundary and the bowler is so embarrassed that they cannot vote in the next day’s lynch.

The Hack (Day Action): You wild swing yet again connects with ball and the rest of the players are astounded. This will stop the current lynch leader from being lynched.

You must PM your day and night actions.

Win Condition: You win when every enemy to Victoria is eliminated.

You are Kevin Pietersen, Victoria aligned English middle order right-handed batsman

You are a polarizing figure in your homeland of England, even amongst your own teammates. It’s about time you jumped ship and joined the future power of Victoria to further your career. You are aligned to Victoria with Shane Warne (Ozzy), James Pattinson (soc123_au), Monty Panesar (whall15), James Faulkner (BunniesMan) and Glenn Maxwell (StGeorgeBull). You may freely communicate with these players outside the game thread.

Take your bat and go home (Night Action): On TWO nights, your outspokenness gets the better of you and you just refuse to take the pitch. You are immune to all night actions on these nights. You may only use this power twice. You must PM your night action.

Rocks or diamonds (Passive Action): On your day you can destroy the opposition bowling attack, but if you are stuck in another controversy with the team, your own side’s chances might be destroyed. You have a 50/50 chance of killing whoever targets you at night or dying yourself, regardless of their action.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these will affect your night action. On a FLAT pitch, you have a 75% chance to kill your target and a 25% chance to die, should you be targeted with an action. On a GREEN pitch, there is a 25% chance you will kill your target and a 75% chance you will die, should you be targeted with an action.

Win Condition: You win when every enemy to Victoria is eliminated.

As a Tasmanian, you longed to be accepted by the rest of Australia as a real citizen, but were rejected. During your stint with the Melbourne Stars, you found a state and a man crazy enough to accept you – Victoria. You are aligned to Victoria with Shane Warne (Ozzy), Kevin Pietersen (Jason Maher), James Pattinson (soc123_au), Glenn Maxwell (StGeorgeBull) and Monty Panesar (whall15).

All-Round Skill (Night Action): Due to your flexibility, you can do damage with both bat and ball. You can use this all-round talent to protect one player each night.

Win Condition: You win when every enemy to Victoria is eliminated.

You are much loved in England, but the top spot has been taken by Graeme Swann. Warney has convinced you to join Victoria so you can be the number one spinner again. You are aligned to Victoria along with Shane Warne (Ozzy), Kevin Pietersen (Jason Maher), James Pattinson (soc123_au), Glenn Maxwell (StGeorgeBull) and James Faulkner (BunniesMan).

Favourite Delivery – Doosra (Night Action): Each night you may select one player to target. Your delivery will spin in an unsuspected direction and cause the player to miss the shot, blocking their action for that night. You must PM your night action.

Conditions can be tricky in England and these conditions will affect your night action. On a DUSTBOWL pitch, you receive a second roleblock. The effectiveness of this block will be dependent on the batting skill of the target. On a GREEN pitch, the effectiveness of your block will be dependent on the batting skill of the target.

You just love dropping edges and driving bowlers crazy. They think you are here to keep wicket, but you are here to cause chaos.

Fumble (Night Action): You may select one player to target. If they are a bowler or all-rounder, you will drop their edge and roleblock them. You must PM your night action.

Win Condition: You win when you successfully fumble five different bowlers (including at least one spinner and at least one all-rounder).

Inactivity whether though availability or whatever is what hurt this one, especially on the town side of things. Those are some nice roles RHCP that could have prompted some good discussion is people were active/around when needed, looks like you put a bit of work into it.

I think the work of the scum did it as well - they were killing the guys with the information and they were really using their false hint power well to control the discussion and create confusion.

That's the double edged sword really. Those who are active/have information immediately become the ones with the biggest target. All that's left after that is people without info or unwilling to put their necks out on the chopping block.

I dont recall saying I was town. Just that my voting patterns would confirm I was first on the bandwagon to knock over a few of my mates.

It didn't smell right

Like a chick you pick up in a nightclub who takes you home and gives you the night of your life only for her to wake up the next day and say that she never normally does stuff like this

Yeah, I got a bit impatient trying to get lynches going, once you called me out I realised I had f**ked up. I was lucky in the end.
