I wish I could dismiss this as Herald Sun generated anti-RL propagandha but I think that we as a code should batton down the hatches for a sh*tstorm of a magnitude not seen before.

Wonder if they'll do the same for AFL teams as well?
AFL player contracts already go through the ATO so they can compare it with what they earn. And the AFL get players ATO info to compare with their contracts, coz it makes it a lot harder to cheat the cap unless all parties are involved which would make it a lot to keep it all under wraps. NRL need to follow suit.

Pfffft. The OOPI can't even take action against coppers threatening each other to drop charges against alleged rapists at their favorite AFL clubs. And if threats aren't enough they just destroy the evidence.

i think the ATO wouldn't be allowed to go public so i don't think we'll ever know their findings either way

Chances are the extra payments to the players were claimed as a deduction in the entity's making the payments tax returns thus they would have lodged something with ATO letting them know they were paying the players something.

For all we know they actually issued PAYG Payment Summary's to each of the players and lodged them with the ATO.

The ATO couldn't care less if the payments came from Brown Paper Bags Pty Limted ATF The We Didn't Know Anything Trust. As long as they declared the income it is all good.

Wooahhh...look out. It could get ugly...
Not all clubs run shonky books kia. Most businesses try their best to do the right thing.

I think it's good to have the ATO do an audit. If any club is guilty of making undeclared transactions, then they should be made accountable.

But should most clubs be given a clean report or only be found to have a few minor oversights, that will be a positive outcome.

Good point.

Was there a move on all AFL clubs following the Carlton salary cap and 'hush money' scandals?

The cheating of the AFL salary cap under his [John Elliot's] presidency resulted in penalties which crippled this giant club’s ability to recruit, just as the ``buy players’’ mentality left it in the dinosaur age as the competition moved ahead with the national draft and salary cap.

http://www.thepunch.com.au/articles/how-a-megalomaniac-almost-destroyed-my-footy-club/

Former Carlton president John Elliott has revealed the club paid thousands of dollars to women he claims falsely complained they were raped by Blues players.

...he said the club had concerns one woman might be telling the truth. She also had accepted hush money.

And unlike Deloitte, teams/players don't have a choice as to whether they co-operate or not with the ATO. It would be good if they started with the Storm first though to pick the bones clean

Well anything found on the Storm will only lead to other clubs being scrutinised exactly the same way.
At least that should really flush out the crap.
I will never knock a player for accepting free flights or free gifts, if my sponsor wants to give me a boat or car, I'll happily accept. So ide be a hypocrite to judge them.

Tax Law is pretty extreme when it comes to access to records.

The ATO can do whatever they like to get access.

The only limitation is legal professional privelage.

No "co-operation", and its a simple s.264 ITAA request to a players bank, estimates, penalty at 200% and close the book.
