VB NSW Cup Rd #3 Preview - Newcastle Knights vs. Auckland Vulcans

It’s only the third round of the competition, but already both the Newcastle Knights and Auckland Vulcans have made clear their ambition for 2013.

The match was originally scheduled to be played at Mount Smart Stadium but will instead be fought out at the Cessnock Sports Ground in front of an always vocal Newcastle crowd.
...
The Vulcans head into the match off the back of a confidence building victory at home over the defending premier Newtown Jets and will be looking to build on promising signs they displayed.

The Aucklanders will be greatly affected by the absence of influential halfback Harry Siejka who was forced from the field last week with a head injury.

Siejka was a standout in his time on the field against the Jets, scoring a try and having a hand in everything positive which the Vulcans produced.

The number seven jersey will remain in capable hands however, with regular starter Aaron Nootai stepping up to the plate where he will be partnered by veteran Steve Waetford at five eighth.

In a testament to the exceptional depth at the clubs disposal, Samoan international Tangi Ropati will make his first appearance of the year on the wing.

Newcastle meanwhile come off a bye in round two but will be full of confidence after a 36-24 win in the opening round against competition new boys Wyong Roos.

The Novocastrians have an impressive side on paper, led by Kevin Naiqama, Marvin Filipo and Zane Tetevano who all have experience at NRL level.

Much of the Knights game plan will centre around point scoring machine Josh Mantellato who will threaten the Vulcans fringe defence all day.

Vulcans coach Willie Swann will be relying on another strong performance from his forward pack, with players such as Suaia Matagi, Murray Iti and captain John Palavi holding the key to overcoming their opponents.

The clash of the third place Knights and Seventh placed Vulcans promises to be an entertaining one, with whoever wins assured of a position near the top of the competition standings, kickoff is at 3pm NZT on Saturday.

I actually thought Dominique Peyroux would feel out of place as the only white guy in the team until I googled his picture....

HT: 24-0 to the Knights. Vulcans with plenty to work on if we want to have a chance here. Alehana Mara has left the game with a bad lower leg injury.

Late tries to Siosiua Taukeiaho and Herman Retzlaff reduce the deficit, but it's a sound 30-10 vistory for the Knights.

Vulcans game will be televised on Monday I believe.

Funny to see how many ex Jr Warriors were playing in the Jets v Cronulla game. I recognised Feki, Seluini, Penehe and Adam Henry.
