Aussie Superleague - Jersey numbers?

I'm looking for a bit of info on the jerseys players wore on the 1997 superleague comp. I realise the English competition sees players assigned their own jersey number for the season and I'm pretty sure they did the same in our Superleague comp in 97. Can anyone confirm for me if it was the case and if so - I need to find out what all those numbers were!

Even if anybody could point me in the direction of a Superleague annual that may have been released for the season or similar. I understand that the rugby league annual for that year only covered the Optus Cup even though I don't have it to check.

Anyway any info people could give me would be much appreciated!

Some teams used to have normal ones, like Renouf wore number 3. But teams like Canterbury and Perth had number of different ones. I can remember Halligan wearing 11, and Travis Norton wearing 42. But thats about all I can remember, I didnt watch the SL as much as the ARL.

Some clubs used to do it back in the 70s in what was then NSWRFL. I remember Manly had jersey numbers all over the place.

Can't help you with 1997 Aussie SL, didn't end up watching any of it as my team wasn't involved.

In the Aussie SuperLeague they could pick any number they want without problems. The UK SuperLeague they can pick their own number but their are conditions. Johns and Warrington wanted the number to be 77 so they could market it "So good we had to give him the number twice. But were knocked back by the RFL for it being out of sequence.

Rugby League 1997 by Middleton has the match summaries for Superleague and WCC as it would for ARL or NRL, but it doesn't list the numbers.

Best bet to find out the numbers would be to keep an eye out for old Superleague programs. Try Ebay, nothing there at the moment, though! Yeah I'm sure they did, because I can remember Marcus Bai being 55.

Oh and to the bloke that started this thread, I've got a heap of old Superleague programs laying around, if you sing out with what teams you're looking for, I could be able to help

Eh, not really. That works for everyone in the competition. Alex Chan wore 22 vs the Broncos last week because he was outside the initial 17 and the 22nd considered by the coach.

Marcus Bai wore 55 once because he was a late inclusion and was highly superstitious of his number 5 at the club. Someone else was named at 5 and when Bai pulled up fit, he had 55 tacked on to the back of his jersey. Melbourne Storm got fined for using that number because it was way too far out of sequence.

Scott Hill wore 26 once. I think because he was a late inclusion and the 26th player in line to take the field but also the first replacement 5/8.

They didn't. Own numbers only existed during 97 SL. Melbourne weren't around then.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm compiling some statistics so ideally I'd love to be able to get ALL the numbers. Sounds like it might never happen but any help would be wonderful.. gotta start somewhere. What I might do is just provide a list of who I've got playing in the 1997 SL comp and if anybody can list a number for a player that would be fantastic, cheers.
