Australian men and alcohol

***THIS POST HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE ADMINISTRATORS (EL DIABLO & WILLOW)***

I am a Masters student in Clinical Psychology and am seeking participants to help me out by taking part in my research project. Specifically, my research is looking at men's beliefs about masculinity (or what it means to be a man in Australia today) and their alcohol consumption behaviours.

If you are interested in participating and are male and aged 18 or over, you can access the research questionnaire below where you will be asked to anonymously record your responses to various questions/statements about your attitudes towards the male role and various aspects of your drinking behaviour. It should take 10 to 15 mins to finish the survey.

A lot of the men who have already participated have given me feedback about how interesting completing the survey was in seeing where they were at with their drinking (something we don't think about or like to think about), and what they thought about how a man should/shouldn't act today. So in other words most men have got something out of it.

If you have any questions or want to give me feedback, you can contact me by PM or via email, or post on the board and I'll respond.

Just to confirm, I have sought and gained permission of the forum Admin before putting up this post, so it is in no way dodgy or spam.

The link to the survey is:

Thanks for your help guys.

Cheers

i actually thought for the most part the survey was very stupid, i mean unless you are a bonifide homoaphobe or alcoholic, it was a fairly mind numbing survey

I liked it because it made me feel bad about how much a drink.

Far from an alcoholic... but I still drink far too much.

Exactly...the anti gay message was really strong. An amateur survey at best.
This got my interest.

Homosexuals should never marry.
The Prime Minister of Australia should always be a man.
Men should be the leader in any group.
A man should be able to perform his job even if he is physically ill or hurt.
Men should not talk with a lisp because this is a sign of being gay.
Men should not wear make-up, moisturiser or fake tan.
Men should watch football games instead of soap operas.
All homosexual bars should be closed down.
Men should not be interested in talk shows such as Oprah.
LOL

WTF has that got to do with drinking

My feedback is under

For your reference, you homophobic nutter.

Hi all,

I just wanted to thank everyone who has participated so far; I've really had a great response from the members.

I was reading your posts with interest and where you've posted a comment, I will send you a PM in the next day or so with a response.

I think it is interesting that a few of you have made an assumption that there is a link between the university I attend and some of the statements in the questionnaire which ask you about your attitudes towards homosexuals. I have had several hundred men fill out the questionnaire and no-one has yet to make that link. I just want to reassure everyone that the university, in relation to the course I am studying is Catholic in name only. That is, Catholicism/religion plays NO role in my research. As for some of the statements being "anti-gay", I just want to remind you that they are statements which you either agree or disagree with. The statements in themselves are not anti-gay, but if you agree with them, then that may be indicative that your attitudes are.

Thanks again to everyone who has taken the time to fill it out and left your email address for feedback.

Cheers

I did it earlier and responded to your other post. Some interesting questions. I found myself leaning towards the liberal side with most of them, except for those regarding my rampant social alcoholism. I'd be interested to read the finished product. Psychology and sociology are fields I have a lot of interest in.

Agree that the statements represent a choice in which you can agree or disagree but it appeared that the survey focussed on the anti-gay message to a large extent and did not explore other aspects of drinking and male culture such as drink driving, peer pressure when drinking etc.
