Surely this great individual sporting performance deserves to be included over moments such as 'alfie langers return to state of origin'? With all due respect to Langer Vidukas 4 goals against Liverpool was a far greater effort imo.

No.

How many Australians were watching Viduka score his 4 goals or were interested that he scored 4 goals?

SFA, that's how many.

4 goals in a game, not bad.
But still not as good as Archie Thompson's haul (13 goals) against American Samoa in 2001.

For individual brilliance you'd have to agree but not for anything else. Viduka was in his prime, Langer was supposedly washed up. That was just a regular league game (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) but Langer starred in Origin. And Viduka's effort would have been lucky to have had 10 lines in the corner of the last page of the sports section, Langer was on the back page of nearly every paper (and front page in some).

Maybe if Viduka did that in a Champion's Leauge final I'd agree but nah, Langer's effort was much more important.

Make that one.

It was shown live in Australia on Fox and offcourse was the focus of the very popular Premier League Highlights show on SBS. It was the main item in most sports reports of the day.

I remember it well. When Viduka was interviewed by the sky reporter after the match she asked him how he felt about doing what he did in a game that was being shown live in Australia, he said "What is this live now? Well I'd like to say hello to all the people back in Melbourne".

You're not wrong, Schillaci. This match was featured prominently in the Ten Seasons of the Premier League festivities that were heavily pushed back in 2003, accompanied by television specials and dvds. No doubt the moment has been immortalised in the minds of avid premier league followers all over the world, a total that probably rises into the billions. Would there even be a billion people worldwide who have heard of Rugby League?

An achievement celebrated as one of the best moments in the first decade of the biggest sporting league in the world is certainly one of the greatest sporting highlights for such a small country like our's.

You got the socceroos as first so you cant ask for most more. Most Australians couldnt get a stuff about anything but the socceroos to do with soccer.

i honestly thought Makybe Diva should have been in there for winning three Melbourne Cups in a row. a feat never achieved before.

create debate and have people remember different events is what the show is all about.

It was a remarkable game because Leeds where under strength and had to resort to playing Jacob Burns and Kiwi Hayden Foxe. Both where NSL standard and badly out of place.

Burns was playing in midfield, but was utterly incapable of passing to a fellow Leeds player. Foxe was either centre back or LB, he was slow and didn't have the positional nous to make up for it. He was being cut up by Smicer all game. Like Burns he found directing passes to team mates at this level rather difficult and would simply boot the ball out of play whenever he had possession in the last quarter of the field.

Makybe Diva, it's a horse ffs, who cares. Viduka, massive personal achievment from him, I can't remember that last time someone scored 4 in a premiership game, let alone against a top side. More of a personal achievment than Langer, but as the Langer thing was so prominent here it was always going to be ahead of it.

The game was live in Australia.
I remember it clearly. I watched it, I was interested in it.
How can you speak for all Aussies?

Having recently re-watched the Australia vs. Uruguay qualifier from last November, I've got to put it up there as one of the greatest Australian triumphs you'll ever see. Some might argue that all we were doing was qualifying for the World Cup - but given the competitiveness of the game, I think that puts it above most anything else Australian sporting teams have done. The moment when Aloisi's penalty hits the back of the net is absolutely priceless and despite knowing the result and the outcome of the World Cup - I was no less electrified by the match.

Make that two, I watched it as well.

But to compare it to SOO is just simply bizarre.

Who said I was?

See if you can dig up the ratings for live EPL matches in Australia and I'll dig up the ratings for State of Origin matches in Australia and we'll see if my call of SFA is reasonable.

And I watch EPL every weekend, so there's one for you to start with.

Makybe Diva stopped the nation to watch that great moment! Um...did Viduka stop the nation? Doubt it, I can't remember it to be honest. But I will always remember the Diva winning the 3rd Melbourne Cup!

Hayden Foxe is Australian and only signed with Leeds United this year.

Was playing in the J-League at the time, before moving to West Ham, Portsmouth and now Leeds. Missed 2 years with a broken foot.
