Definitely not Slim Dusty, John Williamson or Paul Kelly. People worship them but I don't anything good about them.

Like wow man, like f**king, you idiots f**king can't f**king appreciate real f**king geniuses like f**king Daniel Johns. You're not looking at the big picture, conceptualise! I bet this guy smokes a lot of pot ;-)

Daniel Johns hasn't written a decent song since Israel's Son. Further, someone needs to try to do something on his own. This copying Nirvana, then the beatles, then whatever else possessed him to start the disassociatives :)lol: ) has got to stop.

Do the Finn brothers count? Peter Garret and Paul Kelly are awesome, even David Faulkner is pretty good. You would have to go back beyond 1990 because australia has done stuff all with music since then. The Living End, Silverchair, Powderfinger, You am i are all solid bands but if they're our greatest ever songwriters then i'm bob dylan.

No, they're both Kiwis. Crowded House only count as an Australian band as they were formed and based in Australia and the other two members were Aussies.

To be frank I thought the heavier Silverchair stuff was completely forgettable, and it was only the last few singles that I found interesting. Nevertheless, I wouldn't actually go out and buy their stuff.

It seems to me that The Living End get a little bit too much kudos on here.

I'm normally into heavier stuff but I prefer Daniel Johns recent stuff with Paul Mac in the Dissasociatives to early Silverchair.

Peter Garret didn't write many of the Oils songs

For the purposes of this thread, what is the definition of a songwriter?

A lyricist?
A musical composer?
A lyricist + musical composer?

I wouldn't really call them songs..he didn't even sing them. He chanted them.
Great music but I can't stand his voice.

Rob Hirst and Jim Moginie are two outstanding songwriters.

Peter Garret was the front man and did write a couple and would have had input on some lyrics but Hirst and Moginie were the main writers.

Those guys were ahead of their time.

Well Cave qualifies on both counts at least.
