Ayshford's try

I keep reading in the papers that Farah's pass to Ayshford was a mile or two forward. Some old clown kept going on about it at my local on Friday night too... I couldn't hear the commentary so I don't know if much was made of it by 9 at the time, but I have to say it looked okay to me. The camera angles weren't ideal though.

Buzz Rothfield has mentioned this in his blog today (http://blogs.news.com.au/dailyteleg...aph/comments/ben_barba_bombs_out_at_fullback/) - reckons the top ref's should always get match-of-the-round to make sure crucial games aren't decided on refereeing mistakes... Apparently that was the Fibros v Silvertails over the weekend, and the game was decided by that forward pass.

What do you reckon?

I thought it was one those 50/50's, my black, white & gold eyes thought it was o.k., but I might have been screaming if it was a Manly pass that led to a try against us. .....I didn't see any of the Manly players blowing up about . Maybe because I was doing handstands at the time??? Certainly not as bad as one of Anasta's passes that led to a try against the Dogs on Saturday night

Well I think the Tigers would have still won. They were playing so well because they were behind. You can't predict what would have happened in the game from then on had the call been made. As soon as they hit the front they shut up shop. This discussion wouldn't be so relevant had the Tigers went on with it.

Im happy enough with the pass. I reckon those longer passes that are thrown when both men are running at speed should be given a bit of latitude anyway.

it was passed ever so slightly backwards but drifted forwards, making it a legitimate pass.

The pass was clearly forward IMO but screw manly they shoulda been pinged for the marker push in their second try so no grounds for their whining.

The better team absolutely won.

At the time Jamie Lyon blew up to the ref about it. Anyway it made up for some stupid penalties awarded to Manly for blatantly milked play the ball infringements, namely merkin Matai leaded into Galloway with his head then falling on his arse as soon as Kef touched him...plus What mong dropping the ball cold to get a penalty :( .

Do you reckon that's an argument in favour of Rothfield's point? I don't have an issue with the ref's because I think it is all about swings and roundabouts. It really annoys me when people suggest they should get it right every time and we should rely more and more on video. Frankly, I think we should all just learn to get over it and enjoy the game... and of course, referees are a part of that. As long as they are not biased, I can handle mistakes.

No .. just saying it didnt decide the game as Rothfield suggests as the game was full of errors which as u have said seems to even itself out.

I though the Farah pass was flat, as was Benji's to Lui for his try. Judas was blowing up to the ref about the Ayshford try but that was just gamesmanship.

It was probably forward but as previously mentioned the Ballin try should have been a penalty to the tigers for Marker pushing so it all balances out

As much as I was absolutely loving the fact they let it go, the pass was clearly forward. I would have lost my mind if it had been a Manly play.

Although I couldn't believe the hysteria about Carney's pass to Anasta last week, I thought that was clearly forward.

Harrigan in his refs review said it was a definite forward pass. They will always be a sticking point, but however, forward passes dont usually offer the attacking team any real advantage unless its NFL style and deliberate, and are usually just a technicality. As far as im concerned the break was made, defense was beaten, and even if the pass didn't go marginally forward, and exagerated by the long pass it was it, we still would have scored. The ball going forward made it more difficult for Ayshford to collect the ball imo, so end ofthe day, no real moral difference.

It was a 10m pass and yes, I think it went forward BUT had Cherry-Evans pass to Stewart when he scored travelled the same 10m and not the 1m, it would have looked just as bad...cause I'm a one eyed Tigers supporter!!!

Agreed, IMO it should near enough is good enough as seems to be in Rugby Union. Unless as you say "its NFL style" and there is a definite advantage gained by blatantly throwing it forward. Many an NRL game has been decided on a ref's incorrect call of a 50/50 pass....and thats not a critisism of Ref's

I have heard Roosters and Dragons supporters comment upon his improvement this year. Well done. He has the build and mix of pace and strength to become a very good centre.
