Haddin has a F/C batting average of 39.2. Pretty impressive for a keeper. It sucks that he is already 29 though. Wouldn't it be great if we had someone slightly younger with the same ability to take over from Gilly?

When does everyone think Gilly will retire?

Luke Ronchi and Tim Paine are extremely good keepers. They have just as much ability potentially as Gilchrist, especially Paine. As for Gilchrist retiring, i'd say he'll give up ODI cricket after the World Cup and give up tests probally at the next summer after the Ashes in 2009. So 2010.

Hold on where did I say Hartley! I said Paine and Ronchi are the top 2. Rightly so. Hartley would be just behind them as the 3rd best young keeper.

Paine & Ronchi are excellent. Hartley & Crostwaithe are a bit behind. Whatever happened to Manou? Now they have Deitz keeping, leaving SA as the only team without a genuinely excelling keeper.

BTW, LOL@ David Dawson & Sean Clingeleffer.

It honestly depends on when Gilchrist retires and if Haddin is in form. If Paine keeps up his form and is equal in terms of batting form, my gut says they will go Paine.

anecdotally keepers often have their best years around 30 ish... my worry is that McCullum will have a lot of miles on him by then.

Haddin looks like a quality cricketer, how is his glovework?

Significantly better than it was in his early years. He was very Geraint Jones-esque 5 or so years ago. It's immaculate now. And his batting has improved with his keeping.

Ahh, I remember the days of sitting at Manuka Oval, watching the likes of Brad Haddin and Merv Hughes go round for the Comets. Happy days...
