Bandwagon supporters

Do you guys reckon that supporting overseas soccer teams is in effect 'jumping on the bandwagon'? I understand the conventional definition of a bandwagon supporter is supporting a team solely on the basis of how well they're doing, but is following teams from places you've never lived at jumping on the bandwagon as well?

I'm particularly interested in what the English fans on this website reckon about aussie fans following their teams but all comments are welcome :) .

I follow Palace because I lived in South London when I was younger, not sure about the other fans, although Chelsea, Man U and Arsenal fans are a foregone clonclusion.

If someone picks a team and sticks with them, I don't see the problem. It's good for the promotion of the code in this country.

My god, are you me? Seriously, that is like my exact story.

I got FIFA 2001 out of a bargain bin at some obscure games shop in town, went home and thought "who should I be". See, I didn't want to be Manchester United because you know what they say about people who follow Manchester United. Anyway, I chose Arsenal because they were top of the alphabet, then a few weeks later I heard they were playing in the FA cup final (this was their double winning year), supported them in that and never looked back.

So just as easily I could have been an Aston Villa fan, but sh*t did I luck out with Arsenal, one of the 3 teams with any conceivable chance of winning a major trophy in England. Call me a glory fan if you want, I've stuck with them for 3 years now (probably 3 of the easiest years to be an Arsenal fan though, to be honest), and I'll be sticking with them for many more. Point is, I don't care if you call me a glory fan, because once I start following a club I stick with them, thick and thin style.

To tell the truth, I don't see how supporting a team based on where they stand in the alphabet is any more random than supporting a team based on which patch of dirt you happen to be born on.

However I do see a problem with supporting a team based on the amount of trophies in their cabinet

I'm an Inter fan because my Dad is from Italy and that's who he supports, he got me following them when I was like 4 or 5 and couldn't pronounce any of the players names. Also an Aston Villa fan because my great grandad played for them and I lived in Birmingham for 2 years.

I follow Liverpool CAuse my Dad did and the first shirt I got was a Reds shirt. I also keep a close eye on West Ham and Fullham Cause Upton Park was the only place where I have ever seen a live Premiership game (on a holiday to the UK) and I enjoyed Fullhams rise to the Premier League.

Christ lolesi, that's a bit similiiar to me!

When I was a lad there was an elderly Scottish man who lived next door, he was almost like a member of our family.

He left Glasgow in the 50s because being a Catholic he found it hard to get a job.

One day, I cant remember how old I was probably like 6 or 7, I was sitting down watching what must have been extended highlight of an Old Firm game with him.

I looked up and asked him, "Do you follow the Celtic, Scottie?" He said "No…. but I hate those Ranger bastards!"

I guess it all blossomed from there.

I started supporting Man Utd back when I was about 8 or 9yo. By that stage I had played football myself for a couple of years, and was really starting to get into it. So I started watching a fair bit of the highlights and the one game they showed every week. Obviously the teams that were successful were shown in that game far more often than teams lower on the table, and over time I started to support United. The attractive football they played was obviously part of it, but I quite easily could've started following any of the other teams that were fairly successful at that time (simply because they were the ones shown more often).

I'm not sure exactly when I did start supporting them. My first actual memory that I still have is hearing that Blackburn had taken the title off us in 95.

Similar for mine. When a kid in Sydney I played Soccer at school rather than League (Played league on weekends) and friends of my father from England gave me all this Liverpool merchandise when they found out i liked football. I moved to Melbourne when 9 so would have been only tiny when this happened. You could hardly call it bandwagon jumping. It was indoctrination lol

I started supporting Villa in about 1980 as i used to love watching the highlights on ABC. I loved watching Peter Withe and Morley so they became my team (plus i loved their colours ... go the claret and blues !! Like a combo of NSW and Qld). 81 we won the League and Euro Cup and i was in heaven. Then it all went pear-shaped and has ever since, but ive stuck with them through thick and thin, mostly thin lol. I think the true definition of a bandwagon supporter is one who deserts their team for a more successful one all the time. Pick a team and stick with it !!
