Banned for 72 games
From correspondents in New York
November 22, 2004

INDIANA Pacers forward Ron Artest was banned for 72 matches today.

Artest will miss the remainder of the National Basketball Association season, the longest non-drug suspension in league history, commissioner David Stern said today.

Artest was banned for sparking a melee in which Pacers players traded punches with Detroit Pistons supporters in the stands and on the court on Saturday.

The league also announced that Artest's Indiana team-mate, Stephen Jackson, will be suspended for 30 games and Pacers standout Jermaine O'Neal for 20 after they followed Artest into the stands.

Jackson and O'Neal landed solid punches to spectators, O'Neal knocking one man to the court, while Artest punched out another fan when confronted on the court.

Injured Indiana guard Anthony Johnson was suspended five games for his actions.

Four other players received automatic one-game bans for leaving the bench.

Detroit's Ben Wallace, whose shove of Artest in retailiation to a hard foul by the Pacers star, received a six-game suspension that begins with today's game in Charlotte.

After Artest was shoved, he lay on the scorer's table where a spectator hurled a drink that hit him in the head. Artest rose and ran into the stands to confront the fan and bedlam ensued.

Artest's suspension technically will be 73 games because he missed the Pacers' home loss to Orlando, while on an indefinite suspension as league officials investigated the riot, which could still see criminal charges filed.

The previous record length for an NBA suspension unrelated to drugs came in 1997 when Latrell Sprewell was banished for 68 games for choking coach P.J. Carlesimo.

"The actions of the players involved wildly exceeded the professionalism and self-control that should fairly be expected from NBA players," Stern said in a statement.

"We must affirm that the NBA will strive to exemplify the best that can be offered by professional sports, and not allow our sport to be debased by what seems to be declining expectations for behavior of fans and athletes alike."

The brawl halted Indiana's victory with 45.9 seconds remaining as players were escorted into their locker rooms by guards while being pelted with plastic bottles, drink cups and other garbage.

Its a big suspension, a little unfair if you ask me but it was something the NBA had to make an example of, you simply can't assault fans, no mattr how much the provoke you, remember Eric Cantona incident a few years back. I think all the fans involved should be banned.

I think thats really buggered up Indiana's season.

Massive suspension and a bit over the top IMO.

Although there isn't really a precedent for this bahaviour in the NBA, so it makes it hard for the administrators to decide on a penalty I spose.

Would it still have been " the rest of the season", if the season was three quarters over when this incident occurred? :|

It's a harsh call imo, you need to keep in mind that fans don't have special rights just because they're at a basketball game. The fan who threw a bottle, or whatever, at Artest, committed an assault against him. Artest's reaction in confronting the man was over the top, but I would hardly say it was outrageous. As for the other Pacers players, what were they supposed to do? Watch their teammate get assaulted by members of the crowd?

Peachey got hit with a bottle last year vs the dogs and he didn't jump the rail and get into a fight. What Artest and Jackson did was very stupid. I agree Artest missing the rest of the season is harsh but what he did was very stupid. It will help him sell CDs I bet.... If the Pacers suck for the rest of the season they will get a handy draft pick to add to their squad. Its not all bad long term for them or Artest.

Jackson I can see why he got 30 but I really didn't see him getting that much.

Wonder if the Pacers will try and send Artest away next season after the problems they have had.

jackson was the 2nd person in the stands and he was hitting people. Thats enough to warrant a suspension.
The pacers will still make the playoffs...so no draft pick for me (lottery based i mean)

If Artest's suspension was not so long maybe he could be traded for Vince Carter. He would certainly toughen up the soft Raptors, and maybe living in less-violent Canada would settle his temper down a bit. :)

I thought he would get around 15 - 20 games. I thought what he did was just as bad as Artest. He didn't even try to stop the fight, he just nailed that bloke.

I thought Jacksons behaviour was a lot worse than Artest. Artest is a victim of his previous behaviour. 72 games is the longest non drug related ban handed out by the league, Sprewell only got 68games for attempting to choke his coach. Over zealous in my opinion, but somewhat justified. Should have been 30-40 games. What is happening to the fans? They instigated the whole incident!!!

as a pistons fan for 17 yrs it was a sickening sight to see.
The season is justified and no way will the players union have this reduced..no chance in hell.
The fans instigated it perhaps, but artest didnt have to go into the stands and do what he did

Interesting column on espn.com:

Wallace (6 games) -- Seems a little low. Wallace kept escalating the incident by trying to get to Artest, leading to the blue cup getting thrown from the stands. If you're making an example out of Artest, make one out of Wallace -- none of this would have happened if he didn't keep pouring gasoline on the fire.

A lot of other thought-provoking comments there:

But if Wallace did this and nothing happened he would have gotten 2 games absolute maximum!!!!

All I saw in the crowd was a bunch of white trash idiots trying to punch a famous ball player sothey have something to tell their kids. I used to respect the Detroit franchise, but after that incident I'll be going for everyone to beat them this May.

what is going into the crowd going to achieve?????? seriously?????
No good can come out of it.
Do you think the fans would ask for artests autograph? I dont think so.
He is an opposing player, he charges into the stands, attacks the wrong guy, what the hell do you expect the crowd to do?
No one is soley responsible for it. Everyone takes share of the blame

The guy that stands up to Artest on the floor-whilst he is no doubt an idiot, you've got to say that he has some guts as he doesn't flinch at all when he is about to go toe to toe with someone over a foot taller then him...

If anything Artest seems initially shocked ( for a split second, then he unloads on him...)

No brain no pain I guess....

I thought that the suspensions handed out were pretty massive until I realised that 70 games is only a season or so. In rugby league terms that sort of suspension would have been huge.

a 70 game suspension in league or union would almost be your career.
NBA play 82 games a year and as there were 73 games left at the time of his incident he got them all.

Artest will come back from this. I dont know if he will come back a Pacer or as a NY Knick. Isiah Thomas has alot of pull in NY and he loves Artest
