Barrett Extends Dragons Contract to End of 2008
Dragons captain Trent Barrett believes he will play the best football of his career during the term of his newly-extended contract, announced today.
The 26-year-old Australian five-eighth also believes the Dragons will win the Telstra Premiership during that time, with Barrett extending his current contract (valid to the end of 2004) for a further four years to the end of 2008.
Dragons Chief Executive Officer Peter Doust said this was one of the most important contracts in Barrett’s first grade career, which includes 145 games since his debut with the Steelers in 1996 (45 – Steelers, 100 – Dragons).
“It’s very important for Trent and the Dragons in terms of planning for the future,” Doust said. “The Dragons believe his best football is in front of him. And since he is about to become a father for the first time next month, this contract is also about securing his family’s future.
“While Trent was still under contract to the end of this season, both he and the club were keen to have the matter sorted out before the season started so there would be no distractions for Trent and the club throughout 2004.”
Barrett agreed it was a “big” decision at this stage of his career, but said the decision to stay with the Dragons was “easy”.
“The club has been good to me and I want to repay their faith in me,” he said. “And with people like Mark Gasnier, Shaun Timmins and Lance Thompson sticking around for the long-term (they extended their contracts last year) the decision was made a lot easier. I’ve played with them for a long time and want to continue to do so.”
Barrett said he was pleased to be able to put speculation about the Roosters in context – “it has always been just that … speculation”.
“I am keen to stay with one club for my entire career,” he said. “I also want to captain a side that has a good chance of winning the premiership and – if we all stay healthy – I don’t see why we shouldn’t win in the next couple of years.”
Barrett said he was excited about training and playing this year after missing most of last season with a broken ankle.
“The only goal I have set this year is to play at least 20 games for the club,” he said.
