Barrett in but Gasnier out
By Josh Massoud
July 18, 2006

AN injury curse continued to haunt St George-Illawarra yesterday, with Mark Gasnier diagnosed with a calf tear just as Trent Barrett eyed his long-awaited return from suspension.

News that Gasnier and halfback Mathew Head could both miss this Sunday's showdown against Canberra tempered the sight of a refreshed Dragons skipper powering through training runs at Oki Jubilee Stadium. In his farewell season at the club, Barrett was ousted for six weeks in May when after-the-fact video footage revealed him striking Newcastle wing Brian Carney with an elbow.

During his long stint on the sidelines, the Wigan-bound 28-year-old caught a glimpse of his NRL mortality as the Dragons dropped only one game without him.
It was an unnerving sight that Barrett yesterday declared would push him harder than ever to "finish on a high."

"It's my last year in the NRL and that suspension was the last thing I was looking for," he said.
"It hits home when I think there's only seven weeks of the regular season to go and after that you don't know what's going to happen. It's certainly gone very quickly."

Given the Dragons' good form in his absence, Barrett will be unleashed on the Raiders with no lingering resentment against Channel 9 employee Rowan Carroll, who volunteered the damning footage.
"I'm over it now," Barrett said.

"You do the crime, you do the time - that's what they say.

"It's been a lot easier to take because the boys have been winning."
Head was excited about renewing acquaintances with Barrett after combining for just 20 minutes this season.

"I can't wait to play with him," Head said. "If there's any doubts I suppose I wouldn't play but I can't see there being any problem."
Dragons coach Nathan Brown said Head's availability would depend on doctors' advice.
"If there's a risk of long-term injury, I won't risk him at this time of the year," Brown said.

Of equal concern is Gasnier's calf muscle tear, sustained in the epic duel with the Bulldogs on Friday night.
The injury was cruel irony for Brown who offered to give his Origin star the night off.
"The doc has been saying 'I told you so'," Brown said.
"Playing so many games just wears him down."

A final decision on Gasnier's fitness will be made on Thursday, when he and the Dragons' other Origin players return from an enforced break.

This should be made a "sticky". We just have to change the names each week and the thread will continue all season with updates of whose turn it is to be crook. :(

It doesnt really matter were losing a 5-8 and gaining a 5-8 its a win-win situation

What are you nuts?!?!!?

Gaz is one of the worlds best centres - and with him out we lose one of our best attacking options.

Thankfully we have great options when it comes to replacing our stars - but losing gasnier is definitely not a winning situation.

I don't think we'll lose any just because Gaz is 5/8th, he will have a roaming commision, 6 is only a number, it's not a directive.
Don't forget he scored 2 meat pies last week from #6. :)

Gotta agree with you there Preach, I see GAz becoming a success at 6. Of course he wont be the traditional Baz style 5\8, bit why would you want him to be?

We have Head and Hornby (Ala Prince and Hodgson at the Tiges) to create and lead the team around. I see Gaz as filling more of a Benji style role and running at teams.

your right pete, but what happens if head or hornby get injured, who are we
gonna rely on there. gaz, gozza and maybe even young. they arent good to
have as your main playmakers. if we are gonna be a force next year, we
need to sign chris sheppard as a back up just in case for an emergency. it would be better than having a centre or a 2nd rower kicking as a playmaker.
i think if we dont figure out soon that we need another playmaker, the other
teams will take out matt head and that would leave us with only 1 playmaker.
imo at first gaz will work out but after a while we will be figured out.

Fewer than the number of years it would take you to understand what The Preacher said and believe it

Well according to Sports Tonight - read into this what you will... - Gaz has been running around at training and looking the goods - with a chance he might be playing on Sunday.

I dont want him to play.
I'd rather he sat this game against the Raiders out rested up and made sure he is fully fit for the rest of the season. I think we can be the Raiders with out Gasnier.

I am sure they will be smart and not play him. A minor calf strain is one thing but if he plays and tears it then its 4-5 weeks on the sideline. Not worth it at this time of year.
