Batten down the hatches, folks, the storm in a salary cap may not be over yet

ANALYSIS

The National Rugby League has prepared itself for the distinct possibility that the Melbourne Storm salary cap breach will get worse.

It is only natural for the league to anticipate that the investigation into the club's cheating - ordered by Melbourne's owner, News Limited - will establish the existing breach in greater detail.

But they are also well aware of its potential to discover breaches that may so far be unknown.

The NRL's salary cap auditing team, led by Ian Schubert, is not as large as the league would like, but it was still able to unearth the Storm's systematic cheating that went back to 2006, and was projected to be at its worst this year. The fact that News Ltd now has representatives of the accounting firm Deloitte, and members of its own internal audit staff, on the job in Melbourne means the digging will get deeper.

Schubert had been on the case since October in a bid to uncover the extent of the Storm's rorting.

Further breaches from this point - should they be found - are likely to be discovered much more quickly because of the number of people involved in the investigation.

The odds are that more accounting discrepancies will be found, and the league won't be surprised if that happens.

News Ltd has already said it is prepared to divulge any new information that may be uncovered to the NRL for judgment and penalties.

The director of corporate affairs for News Ltd, Greg Baxter, said yesterday that while the investigation had not thrown up anything new at this stage, it was only in its early stages.

Baxter said that News Ltd was not necessarily anticipating new breaches in the investigation into the Storm's accounting but if their books contained further inconsistencies investigators would soon expose them.

''We believe we'll find a lot more detail to do with the matters that are already known,'' Baxter said.

''Whether there is any new stuff is yet to be determined. There's nothing at this stage. If there is, we will accept NRL action on it.''

It is estimated the forensic audit, as it is called, will take several months to complete.

It's going to be a substantial dig.

If the Storm were prepared to devise such an elaborate plan, it seems a logical extension that they may have come up with at least another.

That is why it is wrong to suggest the Storm should be allowed to play for competition points this season, and possibly even make the finals and contend for the premiership.

Imagine if another rort, or rorts, was uncovered further down the track that put the club further over the salary cap than the $700,000 it has already admitted to. That would be ridiculous.

The league has done the right thing in effectively shutting the Storm out of this year's competition.

Even if there was no potential for the matter to get worse, it acted properly. The possibility that it could get worse means the game couldn't possibly allow a situation in which Melbourne could be a competitor.

Salary cap rorts could top $2 million

* By Phil Rothfield

THE full extent of Melbourne Storm's salary cap rorting will take at least three weeks to uncover with fears it will rise over the $2 million mark and involve up to 12 players.

The Daily Telegraph understands five current players - Billy Slater, Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Brett White - and three former players in Mick Crocker, Dallas Johnson and Steve Turner were all receiving payments outside the club's salary cap over the past five years.

There are no suggestions the players would have been aware the payments were illegal but there were fears last night at least another three stars had been paid outside the cap or had received gifts from sponsors.

Dumped Storm chief executive Matt Hanson admitted to a $1.7 million scam in his confessions to the NRL last Thursday.

But it emerged over the weekend that players were given speedboats, cars for their partners and $20,000 store cards from one of Australia's biggest retailers.

"It could be $500,000 more than first thought," a source said.

One player even worked as a phantom security guard on a corporate marquee at the Melbourne Cup three years ago and was paid $20,000 for doing nothing.

Another received a free $30,000 boat and a $20,000 gift voucher.

An NRL source said last night investigators and senior accountants would take several weeks to uncover the extent of the rorting.

"There is a very real chance more players and more payments will be uncovered. This is still very much a work in progress," he said.

Investigators also hope to interview Melbourne-based music promoter and entrepreneur Andrew McManus this week about his alleged role in the payments.

NRL boss David Gallop received the full support of the other 15 club chief executives in a phone hook-up yesterday to update the clubs on the progress of investigations.

But Storm members were not so forgiving and were considering legal action over the penalty.

Les Mapstone, a member since the Storm's first NRL season in 1998 said: "My view is it's a Melbourne thing, if it was St George or a foundation club they wouldn't be punished at this level."

Hmmm... I reckon the NRL might find it a little more difficult to strip us of titles if we were caught doing something similar to Melbourne...

These must be two of the most laughably pathetic articles i've ever wasted time reading. Forensic salary cap audit may come up with more detail? Really? I never would have guessed a 3 month audit by deloitte may uncover a bit more detail than a former storm employee ratting to shubert. This story has now become a vehicle for any journalist to lazily write anything. "it could go up to 2 million". How do they know? Why not write 3million? Or 4? Laughable.

That line about it being a Melbourne thing and if it was St George it would be different, you people can see that he is just trying to get more fans from the Melbourne public right? Remember? the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Yea, i find the fact that this year they are massively over and in other years hardly at all rather amusing. Considering that id imagine the full audit will show this has been occuring since 1999.

Do people not realise this club won a comp in their second year? Does that not ring alarm bells at all to anyone?

To be fair a few teams were allowed to be over the salary cap in 1999 including the Dragons because they were honouring contracts made before mergers, relocations etc.
