The fact so many people's reaction to this is about Rothfield and not what was actually said is pretty sad.

Especially when it's probably the best bunch of quotes from a current or future administrator we've seen in years. The question that wasn't asked was, how does Beattie's positive, expansionist rhetoric gel with the non-visionary CEO's attitude?

First of all I’m suprised you said something positive and rothfield is a idiot.

Secondly, like others have pointed out, what else was he going to say? He’s a politician.

Thirdly, comparing CEO and chairman from different periods is stupid. Grant would of said the same things in my opinion. Do you think if Beattie join the commission 5yrs ago he would of been pro expansion? I think Greenberg would say the same thing now.

Let’s look at the facts,
Expansion. Beattie -By looking at 2nd tier and promoting Perth, brisbane, png, nz, cc. Nothing new there at all. Grant and Greenberg said the same thing but had to sort out failed clubs and 2nd tier first which has been done.

Finances- Grant/Greenberg all said the game isn’t broke. Nothing different to Beattie there either.

It shows that people/media subconsciously paint there agenda/opinion on people without actually listening to what they say.

I thinks it’s good that it’s publically out there because it puts a line in the sand for fans to hold him to. I think he will be good for the game and I really hope expansion happens even quicker than 2022. Maybe over time the opinion of the commission/Ceo will become positive and the fact they are there to promote the game overal not individual clubs.

Geez how much cinicism.. about a journalist being an ass.. and a politician being a sweet talker..

No one is saying we think he’ll DO all that, but the mere fact he knows what to say is an improvement.

Re:StormWarrior
You just contradicted yourself. Grant said “we should expand AFTER we secure the clubs financially.” which at one point morphed into a strict “expansion is off the table”.
Beattie said get them in for the next TV deal. Big difference.

Not saying clubs are gonna let him, or he’s not gonna turn, but I follow expansion news closely and this is a change of tone definitely.

The ideal timeline would be announce the teams this year, get them in the second tier 2019, get them in the nrl 2021, sell the ninth game in broadcast negations that will take place in 2022. If the game wants to find the money in the next 5 years to fund it is another matter.

The most positive stuff we've ever heard from any of our future(?) leaders. I'd love it if he could do it, but...

Beattie is a consumate politician, extremely skilled at talking the talk and very much less effective at walking the walk. His long tenure as Qld premier was marked by repeated scandals and debacles but he was able to skate clear again and again (got a problem? Borrow and throw money at it, don't worry about the future, tomorrow never comes), partly due to his friendly media-tart act and equally due to the ineptitude of the opposition over all that time (and continuing to this day). His government would have been well and truly buried early on if the opposition had had a clue at any point along the line.

Talk's cheap, particularly from Beattie.

What do you base that on?
I actually think he has a deep love for the game and that's a good start.

His business record is strong as well.

Politics is what it is. The fact he stayed in as long as he did suggests he has tenacity.

Worth giving him a chance.

I don’t think I contradict myself at all. As far as I’m concerned Grant and Greenberg both said they wouldn’t expand until clubs are financial and the 2nd tier comp had been restructured. Both of those things have happened with the sale of titans and Newcastle and the restructure of 2nd tier/20’s. The next tv deal is 5yrs away so Beattie is hardly making breaking news with his comments. But I’m still pleased he said them.

Beattie is keen on expansion which is great. It’ll be interesting to see which clubs try to stop it

Sydney clubs, because they know eventually some clubs will have to be cut. And we know where they will come from.

Good interview by Rothfield. He asked the questions most fans wanted answered. And Beattie answered them in a positive way for the game.

how long till somebody in the press mentions Beattie (Peter not Ned) is a Queenslander and as such will try to f**k over the Sydney based teams as he just doesn't understand the Sydney/NSW culture

Let's hope Beattie understands rugby league better than that! I'm certainly hopeful that Peter Vlandys is genuine for the code going forward in a smart way. The implosion stuff is tiring! Additional clubs, cheaper ticket prices, fan friendly timeslots and proactive well targeted junior development work is required .

I think the clubs do a great job of f*cking themselves regardlles of who is in charge. Let's face it, Ghandi could run the NRL and the clubs would still be up to their eyeballs in a factional type attitude.

On a serious note, glad to hear Beattie talk about junior level football. No players = no game. Hopefully it's more than just talk.

Nah. This is the best speak I've read for a long time. Grant was never specific about the need for expansion or where it could happen. In fact the recent mob have always danced around expansion or even just ruled it out. Beattie would probably be best served sucking up to the clubs and the state bodies if he wanted their support for chairman. He isn't. Talking expansion is not likely to gain widespread support from exisiting people. It might prove to be grandstanding or he might not follow through or, more likely, won't be allowed to, but it's still better than we've heard for a long time.
