My fellow Eels fans,
Today I was thinking to myself just how bad the Eels have been going over the past 4 years. I know we made a Grand Final in 09 but other than that it`s been very bad as my stats will show.
I thought I would do a tally of how many weeks each club has been in the top 8 since round 1 2008.

  1. DRAGONS - 88 WEEKS
  2. BRONCOS - 80 WEEKS
  3. STORM - 79 WEEKS ( inc missing most 2010 )
  4. EAGLES - 78 WEEKS
  5. TITANS - 70 WEEKS
  6. TIGERS - 57 WEEKS
  7. PANTHERS - 53 WEEKS
  8. KNIGHTS - 52 WEEKS
  9. ROOSTERS - 51 WEEKS
  10. BULLDOGS - 44 WEEKS
  11. WARRIORS - 35 WEEKS
  12. COWBOYS - 34 WEEKS
  13. SHARKS - 27 WEEKS
  14. RABBITOHS - 27 WEEKS
  15. EELS - 13 WEEKS
  16. RAIDERS - 12 WEEKS.
So over the past 4 seasons, thats close enough to 100 weeks, the Eels have been in the top 8 for only 13 weeks.

  6. ROOSTERS - 29 WEEKS
  7. BULLDOGS - 26 WEEKS
  8. PANTHERS - 23 WEEKS
  9. COWBOYS - 19 WEEKS
  10. SHARKS - 16 WEEKS

over the last four years we have had a higher reward than most teams for less performance in the regular season. we had one of the most amazing rides to a gf in the history of the nrl, something that was made even better by the fact the climb happened after a dour first half of that season. when we do get to the top again it will feel great given the crap times.

no point whining about the past. last two years have been crap for a number of reasons. look forward to next season. by round 6 we should be firing alright.

And the only time that we have done well is when the coach (Anderson) gave up and stopped coaching, he let the guys go out there and have fun and play how they wanted to (Offload, offload, offload)... And what do u know? We made the Grand Final

Here's another really concerning fact -

At a Gala event on 17 April 2008 the Team of the Century was announced, being:
Full-back: Clive Churchill
Wingers: Ken Irvine, Brian Bevan
Centres: Reg Gasnier, Mal Meninga
Five-eighth: Wally Lewis
Half-back: Andrew Johns
Lock: John Raper
Second Row: Norm Provan, Ron Coote
Props: Arthur Beetson, Duncan Hall
Hooker: Noel Kelly
Reserves: Graeme Langlands, Dally Messenger, Bob Fulton, Frank Burge
Coach: Jack Gibson.[17]

by my calculations, we have 1 former eel in this team (not including the coach). Its just not good enough.
Wally Lewis?

I hope Pou Pou does LBA assists over this same period - cos that would put everything into perspective

These are some sobering statistics. But what they depict are the four seasons in which we have not had NRL quality halves. We've had Finch, KK, Mateo, Mortimer and Robson in those seasons. The loss of Tim Smith has been really significant for this club and it was compounded by the errors of letting Hodkinson and Maloney slip away. Neither of those last two would have been saviours but we would have had attacking options other than Hayne. The only saving grace for this period, as opposed to 2003-2004, has been our forward pack.

Maloney's been good but Hodkinson has been really underwhelming this season. Manly really had no qualms about letting him go and now they look like geniuses

Imagine if we had the halves combination of

6.Maloney
7.Hodkinson

I doubt we would be coming last this year.

Easy to be wise in hindsight. Maloney was no standout in NSW Cup and who is to say that he would be the player he is now if he stayed rather than blossoming under the Bellamy/Storm system. I don't recall many blowing up when he went to Storm.

Hodko is not all that much better than Morts IMHO. Manly seem to have no problem in letting him go.

We actually have a 7 who can steer the team to a comp, so I'm happy with what we have TBH.
