Bellamy 'the referee doesn't like how we play'

Is he cracking jokes? This should be the penalty count against your mob every game

A ‘gutted’ Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has launched an attack on referee Ashley Klein following his team’s dramatic after siren loss to Newcastle last night declaring: “Ashley Klein obviously doesn’t like the way we play our footy.”

After his team lead 30-20 with three minutes to go, Newcastle scored two late tries before captain Kurt Gidley calmly slotted a sideline conversion after the siren for a 32-30 win.

While admitting his team should never have lost with three minutes to go, and his team’s defence was disappointing, it was the 7-0 second half penalty count and 11-3 count overall that left him most concerned.

“Ashley Klein obviously doesn’t like the way we play our footy,” Bellamy said. “We’ve had him that many times this year and the penalty count hasn’t even been close.

“I’ve spoken to (referees boss Tony) Archer about him … every time we have Ashley we always seem to be on the wrong side of the penalty count.

“Look, I’m confused but 7-0 in one half of footy …

“I’m gutted, I’m disappointed. Disappointed in the way we defended to be quite honest and really disappointed in the way the game was refereed.”

Storm captain Cameron Smith said he had several conversations with Klein in some animated second half discussions on the basis of consistency.

“Newcastle were given penalties for something they did early in the game before us,” Smith said.

“One particularly was a penalty against us for obstruction. I went to take someone in the first half and the same thing happened … they played on. We did the same thing and were penalised.

“I was just asking the question why we weren’t receiving the penalties they were.”

Still, even so, Bellamy admitted you shouldn’t lose a game leading by 10 with three minutes to go.

“Without doubt our defensive performance wasn’t good enough – I’m not trying to blame it all on officials,” he said.

“With three minutes to go, we should be winning the footy game.”

No one likes the way they play. They've killed attractive football for the last decade.

I do agree they were done harshly in some areas of the game but it just shows how long Melbourne have gotten away with crap and how well accustomed Storm have become to the way they play. Smith's "obstruction" claim was cute, the bloke is nothing short of a sook and just shows he doesn't deserve the amount of respect he gets.

It isn't rocket science and I'm dumbfounded by how Storm fans are in such an uproar, seemingly on the verge of the idea of it being a conspiracy against them.

Ashley Klein obviously has a chip on his shoulder. He has an axe to grind against Qld and Storm.
He should be demoted to the Holden Cup.

Nobody outside of Bellamy and his acolytes likes the way they have bought dangerous and unsportsmanlike garbage into the game we all love.

Ashley Klein should be the only referee allowed to officiate Storm matches as he's the only official prepared to do his job properly.

So this. They are coached to cheat and want to have a sook when they get pinged for it.

Their Facebook page is a laugh. They're convinced it's a conspiracy.

I love it.

The Sydney conspiracy strikes again? They must have extended it to a NSW conspiracy to incorporate Newcastle too

Every lossing NRL coach ever: "We concede 11 penalties in a game. Obviously we cant be at fault, therefor the ref was wrong..."

I really want to see the ARLC totally crackdown on these types of comments. Not just the bad ones when they say "the ref was cheating", i would like to see a total ban on any coach or player making any comments in the media about any decisions.

The level of disrespect that RL refs have to deal with is ridiculous and it all comes back to the NRL; this idea that it's acceptable to say the ref was wrong and should be fired.

The only reason people think the quality of officiating is going down is because of the level of scrutiny it gets and how people will just go on and on about it. Every week, at least once Gus will spend 5 minutes bitching about how "that was the worst decision ever, forget last week. THAT was the worst"

This is a culture that needs to be changed and that needs to start at the top...

They have gotten away with so much shit over the years they now think they are entitled to preferential treatment.

Nothing is ever Melbourne's fault!

Smith says they were penalised for things that were allowed in the first half, that there is the problem, refs manage players to the point that when a penalty is finally blown the players blow up because they have been getting away with it for the whole game, why should they be penalised for breaking the rules, it's the refs fault for not telling them when they are about to get penalised.

I thought we were actually well disciplined in the 2nd half for a change. I think we earned the right to be ahead in that department. Some of the penalties we got were pretty lucky though.

Swings and roundabouts, happens to pretty much every team throughout the year.

As a Newcastle supporter, I was pleasantly surprised each time we received a penalty for the ball player being taken over the sideline after held was called. Thought that was meant to be taken back to when held was called and continued on with the tackle count?
