1. A player in possession may be tackled by an
opposing player or players. It is illegal to tackle or
obstruct a player who is not in possession.

3. Once a player in possession has been tackled it is
illegal for any player to move or try to move him from
the point where the tackle is effected

From the ARL's 2011 International Rugby League Rules pdf
(can't submit link at 15 posts- just google rugby league rules)

It does not appear to be illegal to push the actual ball carrier (but no other player) before they are "held", but they should be called held as soon as they themselves can make no further progress (an interpretation of the tackle rule)

These have always been the rules, and should be enforced in NRL club matches as well.
They are necessary to avoid the forming of rolling mauls, which would make the game
like the much inferior Rugby Union. Players pushing the ball carrier after they have stopped is a bane on the game, and I am very glad it was ruled up in a high profile match. I hope it continues to be policed. If I wanted to watch Union I'd go to a Union match.

Right call.

Timing seemed off though.

Like the penalty against the Broncos where McCullough was infront of the play. When had that ever been pulled up?

One of these days Pete your fence is going to break and you're going to have to make a stand.

That disallowed Hannant try .........on ANY GAME of the NRL year would have been given the BOTD.

Which is what I meant by timing.

It's been let go so many times honestly it just seemed like the refs wanted to make a statement.

Again Pete......get off your fence

The disallowed try was akin to saying

No...QLD

we can't let you score any more points because you are starting to embarrass the NSW side.

We've decided it's not good for the game for this to happen

May of been the right call, but you never see it called.

If that had not ended up in a try, such as stopping a player from getting dragged into touch, it would of been play on.

Common sense, that was a try, he didnt take out a player, he was just pushing a player which has been done on numerous occasions even in this origin series.

Look at ennis, he took out a QLD defender at the start of the game and didnt get even looked at.

This is going to be a high benchmark if they want to be consistant.

Yeah that was odd, the camera sort of cut off though. Wouldn't surprise me a Maroon got tangled up with him in the kick off and Ennis being Ennis reacted.

I agree it is a bad look when a rule is only enforced part way into a season, on a big stage. And it looks worse if we don't see it again for 10 years.

I thought it was a particularly blatant example of touching someone other than the ball carrier, and I wanted it penalised at the time and was just explaining to my wife why it was against the rules but won't be pulled up when the penalty was awarded.

It is not at the point where players are actually forming mauls and playing boring tug-o-war type football that we see in Union all the time (but can't see the actual football, how exciting...), but I don't want it to even get near that point.

If the game was in the balance I bet that would have been awarded a try as it should have and would have been in any NRL game. I also doubt that NSW wpuld have been awarded a penalty try if the game were in the balance. There I said it....

Piss this yawnion mauling off out of our game, we should start penalising players who maul over the line. It is OK to stop a team mate going backwards or over the side line but you shouldn't be allowed to push them forwards.

Yep .....first thing I thought of was the game 3 no try

Once again the referees are up to their usual inconsistent consistency.

Merkins......

McGuire (I think) try on the weekend?
Yep, it came up on the roast, and everyone agreed the decision in SOO was wrong, when compared to the countless other moments when a player interferes with an opposing player who isn't carrying the ball.

Only reason it wasn't given was to mitigate the pain on NSW. 40-12 would have become quite painful, although it was probably the more accurate result according to what happened on the field...
