Some dogs fans told me shortly after we signed Roberts about his long kicking game, really saw it for the first time last night. We'll have to play him in the 9 surely.

If you saw the dogs play last week, you would've noticed Roberts sublime short kicking game.
Laid on 2 early tries through neat grubbers.

"But if he's' that good, how come he's not an international or something??"

Last full season (2009) he was a Kiwi rep. Since then struggled to overcome injuries, back on the paddock now!

He WILL go missing from time to time - but since we're not relying on him every play, it'll be perfect. Looking forward to him impressing Kearney too!!

i don't really see that Roberts had a 'great' game by any stretch? he was ok....i agree his kicking was good, but (and yes, even considering the wet conditions) he would have been easily caught with the ball in attacking situations late in the count probably 20 times last night?? Now that might be a stretch sure, but the point is that's too much for a 5/8

perhaps Roberts playing hooker could work, i was a bit disappointed with Keating last night

Probably not a great judge of a game then.

Roberts was one of the best players on the park last night.

Agreed, he was better than Hodkinson, that's for sure. How they gave him MOTM absolutely astounds me. There a dozen better players than him.

you have your opinion, i have mine

i just judge performance on more than just a 40/20 kick and neat handoff on the goal-line to Barba and at least one other good long kick, which sadly Burt took his eye off....other than that Roberts was not overly impressive IMHO. i agree that Hodkinson wasn't great overall and disapperad at times, but hey, he was heavily involved in the Bulldogs try and when the game was on the line, he got them to extra time and won the game for them in extra time

the main difference between the teams was Canterbury's desperate defence early in the game, their forwards winning the battle overall and Josh reynolds when he came on....
Reynolds ultimately controlled the game for the Bulldogs - even Gus said this.....so, meh....

ps. Hayne was head and shoulders above everyone on the field last night in attack and defence (barring our frontrowers maybe)

I agree, Hodkinson has been very disappointing this year but I think he got MOM because he stood up, twice, when needed and won them the game.

Hayne probably would have got it for us had his try and field goal won us the game.

They hardly ever give it to the best player.

Looking forward to Roberts coming next year, our organisation and attack with the amount of possesion we had early in the game was abysmal.

perhaps i didn't express myself properly in my orginal comment....Roberts WAS caught with the ball (for what at least seemed like) 20 occasions (just a figure, not saying it was actually that many).....so that's why its relevant

no he wasn't

he made a few hit ups but no where near 20 and I think 5/8 should run the ball occasionally

and Robson, Keating's sub-par game, the cold, the wet, the greasy conditions, a bloke playing 5/8 for the third time in 3 seasons all contributed to our disjointed attack

are you implying (note: this is a question, not a personal attack) that Canterbury's attack was slick and dynamic? and that Roberts was the reason, or even the main reason? because if you implying anything along those lines it is my opinion that you are for some reason being overly biased towards a guy that is still playing for another team

truly, just give Hayne some time in the role and i'm certain you will see the benefits for Parramatta

lastly, Roberts has NEVER been an organising playmaker apart from his moderately good kicking game - he has always been more of an instinctive, back yourself type player, so again i can't see that he alone (ie. because you didn't specifically mention Sandow as well on this occasion) will suddenly upgrade our general organisation with the ball

well we disagree. 20 (as i said) was a figure i plucked out of the air ok, but i watched him closely and he didn't distribute the ball that much and was more often than not tackled with the ball late in the count, its just an observation, not an attack. sure a 5/8 should run the ball....but on occasions....like you said yourself

look, it was probably just a factor of the conditions last night, he was probably playing safety first a lot of the time, i'll give him that benefit of the doubt. it was just an observation that he is and always has been a player that (more often than not) will look to dominate the use of the ball by backing himself rather than distributing the ball....

cue Pou Pou reminding of us of the 6 or 7 LBA night he has had lol ;-)

Agreed, Roberts will be a great pick up for us next season. In the 6 jersey.

well, if he does win the 6 from Hayne, i'm certain he wont own it for very long (he couldn't win the 6 jumper from Kris Keating let's not forget)

nothing against Ben Roberts, i just don't see the sudden value in him as an elite-style playmaker as many people seem to

That means he's a cert for the 6 for the season.
