Benji Marshall has been stripped of the New Zealand rugby league captaincy against his wishes ahead of this year's World Cup.
Marshall was relieved of the captain's armband by coach Stephen Kearney, who said the decision was made in the best interests of the team.
"It was a very tough conversation," said Kearney in a statement.
"Benji is an immensely proud New Zealander and his desire was to continue in the captaincy role.

"Although this decision has been a difficult one, it has been made in the best interests of the team and Benji will remain an integral part of the Kiwis going forward."
Marshall, 29, played a key role in New Zealand's shock World Cup final defeat of Australia in 2008, with the Wests Tigers playmaker scoring a try and kicking two conversions in the 34-20 win.
New Zealand Rugby League's general manager of high performance Tony Kemp said: "Because of who he is, he carries a massive workload for rugby league in general.
"Our respect for him is immense and we appreciate that he's hurting now but we believe this decision will ultimately lift some weight from Benji and give the Kiwis every opportunity to defend the Rugby League World Cup."
The new captain will be named at a media conference in Auckland on Friday with Warriors captain Simon Mannering the leading contender.

Interesting to see if this impacts his performance/attitude etc. Interested to hear further why they thought so. Not that i think much of Kearney's ability.

It was done to take pressure off Benji.

I agree with the move. Theres a reason why he's not captain at the Tigers.

Take away the responsibility and let him play.

Than and if Foran and Johnson have storming years and Benji doesn't he may well be out

Benji no longer captain of NZ
Benji no longer halfback

I reckon he could put in a very good year this year if he focusses on his footy. No pressures.

Does anyone know what they were saying about Benji on the news in regards to him not turning up to an NRL launch or something? I'm a bit worried

Am I correct in saying he now loses his automatic selection in the All Stars game? I don't think he would like that too much....

Correct. Since he is no longer the Kiwi captain, the only way he would play in the All Stars match is if he is the highest voted Wests Tigers player. It would now be a race between Robbie and Benji

Agree. People were upset he lost the captaincy, but as you say, it will be better for his footy. Sure he will be upset that he won't have the (c) next to his name. But being in the halves he will still have a say and control the ball. The pressure off Benji can only be a good thing for his game.

Does anyone have an opinion on the conversion attempt at the end of the game last night?

Was it just me who thought that Benji, just didn't care?

I could never imagine Thurston or say Reynolds looking so blasé regarding a kick, no matter the score or time on the clock.
