The media have taken a swipe at him this week because the Dragons are killing it and Benji Marshall is no longer there. I'm more philosophical, some of the Dragons have improved their play this year (jack de belin) and also the addition of Paul Vauhan has lifted them up another notch in the forwards. I'm happy to say the combo with Marshall and Widdop didn't work though, but suggesting it's all been because Marshall is gone is a tad unfair.
"IT was suspected last season that
Benji Marshall was the biggest problem at St George Illawarra.
Now it has been confirmed.
Last year their attack was a disjointed rabble.
This year it is as slick as any other team in the competition. In six rounds last year they’d scored 40 points. This year they’ve quadrupled it — 163 points in the same amount of time.
The only positional change from 2016 is halfback
Josh McCrone’s steadying influence for Benji’s erratic and inconsistent form with the football in his hands.
(Plus there is no one fighting with the coach).
McCrone is no frills but the players around him know what they are getting.
Sure, the forward pack is playing with more purpose and more direction.
But look at the improvement in five-eighth
Gareth Widdop since Benji left. He is now playing the same quality of football that we last saw when he partnered
Cooper Cronk at Melbourne Storm."
