Benji gives Dragons deadline ultimatum

By BRAD WALTER

RUGBY LEAGUE

St George Illawarra have until 5pm on Friday to table a formal offer to Benji Marshall or they will lose him to arch-rivals Cronulla.
After waiting more than a week to receive the Dragons offer in writing, Marshall has set the deadline on the club.

If the Dragons deliver on the deal discussed verbally, he will join the club for the rest of this season and a further two years.
However, the Sharks have forwarded a formal offer and are waiting in the wings if St George Illawarra are unable to finalise the terms of their deal.
It is understood the Dragons need to shift a player from their squad to accommodate Marshall, and there is speculation a forward may be heading to England to join a Super League club.
St George Illawarra are also among a raft of clubs trying to sign Melbourne back-rower Kevin Proctor for next season.
Dragons officials have been in discussions with the NRL about ways they can fit Marshall under their salary cap for this season.
Halfbacks Sam Williams, Michael Witt and Kyle Stanley are among 12 players off contract at the end of the season, along with second-rower Bronson Harrison and prop Matt Groat.
The Cronulla offer is also for 2½ years and is understood to be about $100,000 less than that proposed by St George Illawarra.
While Marshall is good friends with a number of players at the Sharks, who boast seven of his former Wests Tigers teammates, the Dragons are firm favourites to sign him and coach Steve Price is understood to have been in regular contact with the 29-year-old former New Zealand captain.
Marshall met Price last Wednesday and he is keen to play in a backline that includes England halfback Gareth Widdop, Australian winger Brett Morris, Kiwis winger Jason Nightingale, centre Gerard Beale and NSW Origin fullback Josh Dugan.
However, Cronulla also boast some big name players and he is conscious of the fact he can't keep the Sharks waiting too long after they tabled their offer this week.
Initially, Marshall had hoped to receive the Dragons offer by Wednesday so he could make a decision but St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust was attending the NRL CEO's meeting, which announced significant changes to the salary cap.
Among them is the introduction of a marquee player allowance in which the NRL could top up a player's contract outside the salary cap but that does not commence until January 1, so is of no assistance to St George Illawarra.
Dragons players have backed the club's bid to sign Marshall and if the deal can be finalised on Friday he may make his debut in the Red V against Parramatta next Saturday night.
If he was to join the Sharks, Marshall's first match could be against the Tigers in a game that would attract massive interest after his bitter split with the club last year.
After being the face of the Tigers for most of his 12-year stint at the club, Marshall felt officials reneged on a promised upgrade and extension of his contract and sought a release to play Super Rugby for the Auckland-based Blues.
However, the move did not work out and he announced he was returning to the NRL on Easter Monday after a meeting with Blues coach John Kirwan.
Melbourne, North Queensland and Parramatta also expressed interest in Marshall but his decision narrowed to the Dragons and Sharks late last week.

Doust has messed this up big time, he has let benji slip, how the heck have cronulla been able to find space in the cap in time and a offer but the dragons haven't even tabled a offer yet..

Not looking good IMHO I could be wrong but it seems that the sticking point is the moving on of the player. Required to make this deal happen, personally Mathews and or Stanley would be my choice and after Stanley's wretched run with injury a fresh start might do him well anyway.cant see who else maybe hunt but I think he's one of prices pets so can't see that happening looks like this deal might fall over at the death knock which is unfortunate as aside from benjis last couple of years I believe he would flourish in the halves with widdop but life goes on and sam Williams deserves some time to settle in to the side if we don't land benji.

The problem is the player they need to release, needs somewhere else to go and has to agree to leave...Doust (as much as I dislike him) cannot force the player to co-operate.

If there is one player in the squad that is probably being payed more handsomely than he deserves, it's Dan. If memory serves me correctly, he was last re-signed in 2012 when he was considered to be a future forward leader and an integral part of the club moving forward. Injury and indifferent form has seen his stocks plateau to some degree...

I imagine locking in 3rd party deals would be taking time as well. I'm surprised all the players are keen on Benji knowing that most likely 2 of them will get bumped

If Doust has messed this up, why are we still in the hunt? Why hasn't he signed with Sharks?
Is Benji just hoping Dragons make an offer? Of course they've made a fkn offer....

 sorry jubilee, I hope im wrong but I think the moving of a player has slowed down the talks with us and I feel benji wants a deal today, the papers and crap are saying our OFFER will be $100,000 more than the sharks and I don't think that's enough for him to stop him from joining his mates at the sharks, plus I don't think we will be able to move a player this quick if that's the case . Hope im wrong because I think Benji can change our season and future.

Maybe this could be one circus act from the dragons saving benji not to announce it on the footy show lastnight and from all those questions that would be thrown at him. Keep the pressure off him and focus on training instead of media attention. Never know.

Media spin?

On the footy show he said hopefully sorted in the next few days....

Maybe Doust was waiting to see what the NRL decided on the proposed Salary Cap changes this week and he's been weighing that up.
Benji would be great for the club by bringing more fans to the game and you'd think, more sponsors to the table but so would winning games. You'd think buying a prop or two would help more with winning games than Benji but we'll see.

It'd be a pity if it doesn't work out because Benji could be the X factor that gets the Cutters over the line this year to win a title.

True, problem is the salary cap changes don't take affect until 01.01.2015 so although it woukd affect marshalls next year rhey need a sution dor the remainder of this year.

Agreed regarding prop...we need 2 big boppers with.......drum roll.........MONGREL.
