Anyone over 25 can remember our elite players going to play in England in the off season.

I have no problem with Benji, Thurston, Hayne (who was quoted on last nights news saying it was a good option) going and earning a few billion on the off season...the standard of Japan Rugby is about the same as park footy..so i doubt any of them would get seriously injured.

this has to be by far the biggest beat up ever...

SBW coming back to the NRL is no f**king precedent.

SBW is able to do whatever he likes in the off season because he is off contract.

ANY nrl player can choose to play japanese rugby or whatever sport they want to play if they are off contract.

Benji Marshall toyed with the idea a couple of years ago when he was off contract and NRL came out and talked some rubbish about them blocking it... it was all rubbish... the NRL would get hauled in front of court and publicly embarrassed if they refused to register a player because they played another sport while they were off contract.

Benji decided to re-sign with the tigers so its all a mute point now... there's no f**king precedence for him... SBW signs 1 year deals which allow him to do this. the trade off is he has no security if he gets injured or has a poor season.

if your good enough to continuously go on that knife edge... than you deserve all the money you can earn. its certainly a risk...

Heard Tauber interviewed on 2UE, he stated he had been taken out of context this morning, misquoted.
He didnt seem upset about something that makes him look to be a liar......but he's been here before (Moltzen Doust) so I guess he knows how to handle all these journos misquoting him.

And those guys used to work a "real" job during the season and train maybe 4 times a week, and smoke a pack a day.

Those days are gone however, and the more I think about it short term contracts are more risky for the player than the club. SBW had one commodity that everyone in the NRL didn't that made his contract with Japan Rugby so large, he was a current World Cup winning All Black. Which for some reason means something to the Japanese.

The more I think about it the less this is a story.

I'm confused, do players want a rest at the end of an NRL season or not? It would seem that maybe the rest isn't as needed as thought. in which case the answer is simple. Move the WCC to two weeks after the NRL/SL Gf and run a proper Interantional calendar from mid October to Xmas with at least 7-10 test matches in it. Pay them a decent rep appearance fee regardless of which country they are representing and lets at least pay them to be playing RL and growing the game.

Bravo! Well said! Spot on!

The main reason this is BS is because Benji won't command massive dollars over there. The money will be good but it won't be a million dollars, not close. $BW is a test level rugby union player and he got a million. Benji is a rugby league player, and let's be honest, neither he nor his club have set the world on fire lately.

Andrew Johns went overseas and played for Warrington in the off season LONG before $BW did, probably even before Benji got the idea 3-4 years ago. So if an immortal can play for another club in the off season there is no reason why any other player couldn't.

Benji would make good money over there. Omar Slaimankhel from the Warriors NYC team, and 5 or so very average first grade games, got a contract that one would have to class as a christmas miracle.
