Bennett's former teams come back to bite

FOR a man who goes to great lengths to hide the weaknesses of his players, Wayne Bennett has a poor record of exposing them when he's in the opposite colours. St George Illawarra will be buoyed by the fact the seven-time premiership winning coach hasn't enjoyed a lot of success against his former clubs, which dates back to 1989 when he left Canberra for Brisbane.
If there is a weapon missing from Bennett's coaching artillery it is the ability to overcome the players and teams he once led to premiership deciders. During his three-years at St George Illawarra, the Broncos proved to be his Achilles' heel, knocking his Dragons out of the semi finals in 2009 and last year.

But it wasn't the only success Brisbane had against their former mentor, winning five of their seven clashes in total against Bennett's Dragons in the past three years.
He also suffered a similar hangover when he joined the Broncos from the Raiders more than two decades ago, losing both contests against Canberra in the first two years following his departure from the nation's capital.
Dragons centre Matt Cooper described the opening round showdown as having a Origin-like anticipation around it, but insisted it wouldn't be in the players' minds once the whistle blew.
''For the fans, for everyone else in the game, it's pretty exciting knowing that we're going up against our old coach … but us as players, we won't think about it until after the match,'' Cooper said.

His first game with us was a golden point loss.

We've still never won a golden point game. Thursday would be a lovely time to start.

You know what I find particularly interesting is that although we have a fantastic record against the Knights, they are always tough games. No matter how bad they are going or how good we are going, the games against Newcastle are nearly always close and always a struggle. In 09 they beat us at Kogarah after we were in complete control of the match. We just scraped home in the penultimate round of 2010 after we looked to have the match; Cooper Vuna scored those tries off cross field bombs and they had all the momentum. Soward and Boyd combined to finally put them to rest. Last year we again looked to have the match sealed only to let them back in and just scrape home 20-18. It is going to be a very tough match first up.

I have wondered that before. I couldn't think of any wins. So we've never won one Godz Illa. That's an interesting statistic. We play a game plan that should suit extra time. The guys are fit. They eat up a lot of metres and have a number of very goal field goal exponents. Stange, very strange.

Right I am going to fearlessly predict a Dragons win in extra time (I see 19-18, I think, it's very faint). Unfortunately Darius has a poor game and picks up a minor injury (it may be his groin. Or may be his face. The vision isn't clear at this point). Jaws drop onto key boards as Prior puts in a man of the match performance and Bring Back Choc dislocates his tongue singing his praises.

I hope we cancel out the Knights opening round after party.;-)

So do I, but I really wanna see Kyle kill it at fullback particularly, just to stick it to Boyd. Haha, a motm performance would be great, I would be really happy for the bloke.
