Nigel Plum, Dallas Johnson and Steve Menzies have the best technique imo, all can put on absolutely bell ringers with their technique, no need for flamboyant SBW style shoulder charges... Get low, drive in under the rib cage. Beautiful to watch. Alan Tongue has a good technique aswell.

Gillmesiter for the yester year blokes

Agreed.

Petero doesn't go too bad either

Also forgot Ben Creagh who has a very good technique, on par with alan tongue, but not quite at the level of Johnson, Menzies and Plum

Agree with Plum, Johnson, Menzies, Creagh and Tongue.

Would also add Danny Galea to that list. From what I saw of him at the Panthers and his lower grade and First Grade performances for the Tigers he is technically very proficient and hits with real venom

Steve Menzies, Ben Creagh and little man with alot of power Isaac Luke. Copy book style tacklers, hit low and drive.

I was going to say Danny Galea but unfortunately the thread is for best defensive technique rather than tackling technique. Danny used to make some god awful reads in defence.

If he makes contact with the ball carrier he will belt them but more than likely they will run straight past him.

He Pulled off a massive hit on Creagh in the 04 final, Creagh ran into what appeared to be a gap straight to the tryline but instead got poleaxed and dropped the ball.

steve folkes & billy noke.

both had wonderful techniques.

steve folkes was a magic defender. his tackling style was as good to watch as michael o'connor's step.

Menzies.

That Tigers winger was taking 2 or 3 players to bring him down and was dragging them with him, yet when he ran at Menzies he was stopped dead in his tracks.

around the neck and head is not a good technique.

Carroll goes loes and drives from the legs alot more often than he goes high. As for origin one. There wasnt much in that. Carrolls arm bounced off white shoulder. I think thats why you'll find it wasnt either penalised or cited. Brett White didnt seem to have any issues with it either.

how he escaped suspension after origin 1 is beyond me, especially after he broke White's nose.

Watch the tackle again sunshine.
It was Johnson who hammered low and with the impact it forced his head to bounce down (whiplash action) and connect with TCs arm which was aimed at his chest at the point of impact.
This was no Ben Ross swinging arm....TCs arm was stationary.

TC is the best defender in the game by an absolute mile. Dallas Johnson doesn't put on a 1/5th of the hits TC does. TC constantly smashes guys and drives them back, constantly ruining the other teams momentum.
