Bias SMH coverage

Todays SMH has a lift out magazine title Sport & Style.

Its full of fluff pieces as you'd expect, but it also devotes 2 pages to the start of the AFL season, as well as 2 pages to 'memorable marks', without any coverage of the start of the NRL season next week.

There is a fluff piece on Jamal Idris from the Bulldogs (NRL), but that's balanced out with fluff by Tim Rogers (you am I) and his love the the Kangaroos (AFL).

It's a travesty that a Sydney news paper can publish a magazine on sport without mentioning Rugby League, expecially with 8 days to go to the start of the season.

You can write feedback to sportandstyle@fairfaxmedia.com.au

this whole board needs to get on this and write letters complaining about it.

you'll find a lot of the time the SMH doesn't actually write these things - they come straight from The Age. The lifestyle magazine they put out on Sunday is a Melbourne Age product too. Sometimes The Age editor of the magazine ads a Sydney angle just to give the impression that it has relevance outside VIC.

BS I agree with you but there is no point in complaining to any media company. They'll let at your email then trash bin it. It's all one-way traffic as far as they're concerned.

Going by their online sport editions, it seems SMH are as loyal to League as The Age is to AFL. If anything, The Age is more lenient as it gives other sports a go at the top; haven't really seen that from the SMH. Its usually just 10 League articles, some Union, then the rest.

There is more League coverage in the SMH than any other code.

I got the SMH today and the sports pages were talking about the kick off to the NRL season and articles on Jonathan Thurstons "highest ever bomb" etc.

What paper were you actually reading?

Im used to it by now. Ive had at least five years of national tv coverage that clearly now deals with RL as the little brother to big brother AFL. At least we arent the red head step brother known as RU.

I got home tonight and discovered this gem and it appears to be replacement for the total failure "Sydney Magazine" which is a style magazine featuring 90% glossy ads aimed at people with shopping compulsions. This seems to be a "style" magazine aimed at people with the attention spans of gnats with a vague sporting theme running through it.

Who would have thought that a magazine about fashion would have more AFL articles than NRL ones (even if they're only vaguely about the sports themselves).

the AFL may well have paid for the 2 pages.

i'd be surprised if the NRL weren't offered the same deal, possibly 1st given that its a sydney paper.

Simply don't understand Sydney's media and its failure to embrace the city's number one sport. One things for sure papers in AFL cities would never get away with trashing the code like Sydney papers do RL.

Is it down to poor media management by the NRL
General apathy towards the code from the people of Sydney
Agends by the media barons that run these papers

answers on a postcode to D Gallop c/o NRL central

Sport and style. FFS. AFL is in the fashion section. League is in the sports section. That seems pretty right to me.

Perth Red, did you see the paper, or you just Sydney bashing again?

I think you will find that the SMH completely favours Rugby Union (which gets a massive disproportionate coverage vs interest) and Cricket, if they could avoid Rugby League they would, but obviously won't due to strong demand from the public.....hence.....there is absolutely no loyalty to league whatsoever.

Of course supposedly Rugby League types don't read SMH......

Note, yesterday was an "official" launch day, so would expect some extra coverage.

Fairfax had dedicated Union & AFL sites at least 4 years before they had a dedicated league site.

Don't blame Perth Red's comments at all.......we both live in afl states and ALL newspapers focus on afl unlike the Sydney papers.

WHat about that show Packed to the Rafters???

Based in Sydney yet constant AFL references as if fumbleball is the number one game in Sydney.

A disgrace.

If you're born and raised in Sydney, you're not allowed in the door at Ch 7. It's astonishing how many Sydney produced shows have been reduced to Cross-Country Basketball love-fests.

There is some serious covert sh*t going on!

They put Sydney Swans players on Home and Away once so nothing surprises with that mob.

Makes you wonder how they gave Wally Lewis's son a gig on the show. It won't be long before they dress him up in fairyball ball gear.

If Packed to the Rafters had constant RL references instead of AFL, I reckon the AFL would complain.
