I want to know who the hell in South Africa keeps putting their hat in the ring to host every time a woeld cup rolls around. Pretty sure they wanted the original 2025 one that went to France. Is there a secret RL loving entrepreneur there? Or is Union just trolling?

They put in for 2017, but not for 2021 or 2025. The 2017 bid was heavily driven by Kobus Botha, who played a key role in the establishment of the MEA region and was involved in getting at least some form of government recognition by SASCOC and SA Government, as well formalising the MAU between the SARL and SARU.

He had Steeden South Africa commit monies towards it, as well there was government funds put forward as well. I'll try and find the bid doc again, but the SARL bid promised more revenue to the IRL than the A/NZ bid.

I wasn't aware South Africa had a semi professional domestic comp ?

The video makes a good piont about the dates would need to be moved if the USA hosted, no piont in having it during NFL, NBA, NCAA Football season. The best time would be February, the WC could be played before the NRL season.

It won't grow the sport having a WC in PNG or NZ, hopefully they don't win.

Sadly the RLWC needs to make money as its the only source of income for the IRL. Hence it will most likely be hosted in NZ and some of the pacific with Aus govt funding.

Now a Feb world nines, that could be hosted anywhere. That is how we should be taking a decent Int comp to these other nations.

Yeah, it could be a while before a WC is hosted by anyone outside NZ, Aus and Eng.

World 9's is a must ! Can we get it into the 2032 Olympics as host nation ? If France could have break dancing anything is possible.

Brisban wwould be the ideal place to have 9’s as a showcase sport in 2032. I get the feeling the ioc are likely to be public school types though who would side with ruggers.

Troy Grant outlined that 9s won't be at the Brisbane games because of costs. It's a shame, because as I read it, if the IRL actually had some coin and could underwrite that part of the Olympics, we'd be in as a medal sport.

Crazy, NRL should have underwritten it. There will never be a bigger platform with which to promote NRL and RL generally. Compared tot he millions they are wasting on Vegas it would have been massive for the game.
Nines is the natural platform imo for international growth of the game.
