I don't think there's anything quite like a thread that kicks off with a big mother of an ant. I took this photo today on my lunch break. What do you think? I hope I got his best side.

We used to call them bulljoes.

They jump (upto 12 inches or 30 cm for you kiddies) and they hurt (bad for anyone).

Ooh I didn't realise they could jump. In QLD I'd only ever seen greenants and bullants but never anything that crazy. That means I engaged in hazard photography today!!

I believe it's some kind of bull ant. My mum has them on her property, they nest in the roots of a tree just to the right of her garage.

Got bitten by about 5 of the bastards while fixing her bbq near the garage. Very sharp instant pain, followed by a strong burning itch. The sting is much more painfu lthen the bite.

I'd compare it to a bee sting. But not unbearable, an ice pack on the stings / bites and you don't really feel it. Poeple have different reactions though.

Oh and Azkatro, you've zoomed up very close there mate. They are very rarely bigger then 2 cm long, still bloody massive for an ant!
