He held the ball long enough before he thought to throw it back over the the rope before he went out. After taking the catch all Laughlin needed to do was ensure he didn't take the ball over the rope with him;which he did!
Weatherill shouldn't have had to catch it ie. unless there's a special rule for BB!!

The ball was going to be a boundary if he didn't throw it back, so in essence he didn't have control of it as it was still "live" (him and ball) heading for a boundary
