9,000 free tickets for AFL in Canberra the other day.

Funny thing is, only 12,000 showed up for the game.

The only things I've gotten free tickets to are

- Super League Grand Final
- Super League Tri-series matches
You must have had corporate seats then (which are in fact paid for), because there were no freebies given out.

So apart from 1997, League doesn't give close to as many free tickets as other football codes in Brisbane
The Lions havent needed to give away tickets for a few years now...

Because the media make out like these are important games whereas if league had results like 74-7 and 91-0 (Uruaguay will be lucky to stop 100 pts against SA) they would be called a joke, a farce or a waste of time whilst in union they are called good warm up games. It's a clear double standard but suits the agenda of keeping league down to NRL and origin level whilst union is the international game. It's all about perception.

It is worth bearing in mind that tries are worth five points in rugby union. Don't forget that the best team in rugby league was leading the second best team 42-0 at half-time, until the Kangaroos eased down a bit.

Using four points for a try, the result today is equivalent to Australia 63 Samoa 6. There have been scores like this in the NRL.

Wouldn't you love to see a genuinely competitive, and widespread international rugby league programme?

of course they do.
Rubbish. Crowds are more to do with venue quality, promotion, competitiveness of the home team, how far way the away team supporters are, etc.

if a sport is dull and boring most people wont go, they find something else to do.
Obviously..

over the decades rleague has always had relatively small crowds compared to other footy codes and the only conclusion to be drawn is that rleague is the most inferior type of footy invented.
There are 4 major football codes in Austrlaia. Rugby League has 'always' had the second highest total crowds.

look at all the other codes;

afl.....tremendous crowds over the years
Absolutely.

union.....huge crowds for tests and now S14
combined, it barely adds up to 25 elite level games per season in Australia. you would expect a rugby-starved rugby public to turn up in numbers for the rare chance they get to turn up and watch a decent game.

soccer.....what can i say
yes. australian soccer is a magnet for crowds. the stadiums arent big enough to fit them all in!

gridiron.....they get 94,000 just to a college game
true.

gaelic....huge
1 stadium gets big crowds. have you seen their crowds beyond croke park?

we must not keep our heads in the sand, it's time to face facts......rleague is a crap spectator sport......and that's all that really matters.
187,000 fans (with 10's of thousands missing out) for another sellout State of Origin Series would probably disagree.

let's not forget this sport was invented by knuckle heads from the north of england which has never been accused of being a breeding ground for rocket scientists.......those dummies got it oh so wrong 110 years ago when they modified union......they got rid of all the interesting bits, the variety and the skill and all were left with is a monotonous, repetitive, low skill sport.

rleague just doesn't cut the mustard in the sophisticated 21st century world.
what aspect of the game isnt growing rapidly??

in fact, rugby league was designed specifically to be the faster, more exciting professional game that needed to attract crowds and sponsorship to pay its players.

We got more people at the ANZAC test than todays Aussie v Samoa match..and will get more in the First Tri Nations match at the end of the year..

Difference between rugby and rugby league? Test Matches mean something in Rugby League terms

A large percentage of tickets are dished out among the corporate world. Because there aren't many games available they all flock to them.

Union is lucky to get 200 to club Rugby Union matches.

Club League gets significantly more. Heck even QLD Cup matches get significantly more than Club Union. Even the local Brisbane competition (and at times even 2nd, 3rd, 4th division Brisbane comp) matches get bigger crowds than Club Union

State Rep Union get crowds significantly lower than State League, and even gets much lower crowds than Club League(NRL), especially on aggregate.

International is the only form that gets higher crowds than League.

this is a total furfy often brought up by league supporters, the attendances at union club games is neither here nor there and trying to compare them to league club matches...nrl...is a sign of desperation and straw clutching.

just compare apples with apples.......the elite competitions in each code.

dont confuse speed with entertainment.

just because a sport is fast paced and non stop movement dont mean it's any good.......have a look at ice hockey, one of the most boring sports around........how about american stock car racing, going round and round those oval tracks.

to be truely exciting a sport needs to provide skill and strategy, an ebb and flow reaching a climactic creshendo......you need different moods within the game not the same monotonous pulse.

It's not League's fault that Union, at club level, stuggles to meet the standards of Group 21 6th grade. Club League in Australia started out just the same as Union, but Australian League has grown from an isolated Sydney premiership into a national competition. Union has gone nowhere, absolutely nowhere.

So essentially you're the one clutching at straws trying to compare a provincial/state competition to a club compeition.

Cheers.

Great, another rugby thread in which league fans accuse rugby and its supporters of being elitist snobs, all the while acting like the most childish, arrogant and closed-minded wankers I've ever seen.

Pot, meet kettle

Super 14 is comparible to State of Origins - the state vs state competitions. So they're the 2 elite competitions in each code. League is miles ahead of Union

If you compare the club competitions, League is even more miles ahead of Union

How can you possibly use the state competitions in Union when comparing the popularity against League when you only use the club crowd figures?

That's like a League fan saying NRL gets bigger crowds than AFL because the NRL Grand Final has a bigger crowd than an AFL club match.

You compare like with like. You don't compare rep matches in one code to club matches in the other.

fairdinkum, you and razor need to stop pretending to be ostriches and get a dose of reality!!!

you can invent all the convoluted logic and mumbo jumbo you like to try and spin a fantasy cocoon around yourselves, but the reality is that the tahs get over 30,000 to each game, the brums get over 20,000 a match and wallaby test attract over 50,000 a pop.......year in year out.

in other words union is very popular......it's a great spectator sport.
