What about the 1999 rugby union "world" cup final between France and Australia, biting, gouging, nut grabbing, stomping just to name a few of the more technical moments. So bad Eales was going to take his team off. Conveniently glossed over by the press when reporting the game. The only thing union leads league in is the bulls**t factor.

Who said it is good for rugby union? I was simply pointing out that blow-outs happen in league too, and it is surely also worth taking into consideration that tries are worth five points in rugby union when making comparisons.

It is hardly surprising that the fully professional nations like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa have benefitted greatly from our players being coached and trained full-time. We also have the advantage of having robust economies that can support a range of sports.

I know from first hand experience that Tonga, in particular, is a poor country, with most of its national income coming from overseas remittances. There is huge pressure on young men and women to emigrate to earn money for their families back home. A kid who can go to play rugby league or rugby union in Australia or New Zealand will do so. A similar situation applies, not to the same extent, in the other Pacific nations.

Some of the kids who go will still want to play for their nation, but will be at the mercy of their new employers as to whether they will be released.

A number of Fijian players were unavailable for the latest Test, apparently, for this and similar reasons.

The disparities are more due to the leading countries going ahead, rather than the popularity of rugby union decreasing. But, of course, ways have to be found to help the poorer countries improve their competitiveness.

Tonga beat Australia in 1973. Do you think that a similar result will ever happen in rugby league?

Mate,

I am sorry, I couldn't care less about this issue. If rugby league wants to bash its collective head against the wall, by continuing to confuse people with its name, that's okay by me.

I have simply pointed out the reality which is that, world-wide, "rugby" means rugby union. Believe it, or believe it not, that is a matter for you.

I am fully aware of the economics and the poverty situtation of many in the PI.Maybe this is the price of union going pro, anycase th fact it has gone pro,has removed the discriminatory barrier preventing union players from trying their hand at league
Quite simply, you cant get over the fact that 2 island nations receive stuff all support from a wealthy IRB,and get thrashed by record amounts ,and all you can do is differentiate the difference of the value of points for a try in union and league- brilliant.Eddie Jones, union journos,Samoan officials are screaming and your concern is gee rugby league had blowouts.
Its not confusing itself- its rugby league, its the rugby league world cup,its the National Rugby League. Its as plain as your honk. The fact that league has the name rugby (check the dictionaries) in its name irks you.We wont lose any sleep over it,the name has helped the growth of rugby league all over the UK,and I mean all over England,Ireland,Wales and Scotland.
The newspapers either refer to your game as union or rugby,so who is confused. The yanks who know of the existence of both sports refer to them as rugby.Union buffs refer to their game as rugby in oz,and just as many refer to it as union despite all the hype ofthe 2003WC>

I am always amused by these comments, for almost 100 years anyone who played rugby league was a mercenary the worst of the worst for playing a game for money, usually the barbs thrown by union supporters. Then along came Rupert and his magic millions and union officialdon, players and supporters tripped over themselves to finally admit(covertly) that playing for the filthy lucre was OK.regardless of Super league. 1st class hypocrisy.
BTW you are to be complemented as you hit the nail on the head indoctrinated sums you up to a T.You omitted apartheid and flirtation with the Vichy in your spiel, but thats understandable forget the past is the motto.;-)

Union isn't leagues ar*ehole.

League has never claimed to have a sperior international comp nor have I claimed to be a genius.

I am smart enough to know that RU is a girls sport watched & played by pussies. I am also led to belive (but I might just be gullible considering my IQ is so low) soccer is the world game.

If your codes only redeeming quality is your international comp than you wankers are pathetic.

Seems as though our pure bred union chaps aren't so pure after all. This from an under 16's game:

The Sydney GPS rugby competition is in complete uproar after a mid-game brawl occurred during a Shore vs Knox game and more recently during a 4th XV match between Sydney Grammar and Sydney High School.

Date: 6 June 2005

The High v Grammar rugby brawl
High v Grammar: an eyewitness account

Crikey Daily - Tuesday, 31 May

A Sydney High parent reports on last weekend's GPS 4th XV rugby encounter between Sydney Grammar and Sydney High School:

The situation was appalling. A Grammar player threw a punch at a High player on the field. The High player threw one back and knocked the Grammar player out. Grammar carried off to sin bin. High sent off to sin bin. While High in the sin bin, a group of Grammar boys, the father and older brother of the knocked-out Grammar player, surrounded the High boy in sin bin. Older brother hit him from behind knocking him to the ground. The father kicked him in the head. People intervened. The father scampered off and left the field.

yeah, it's coming along great in malta, beruit, singapore and russian......... soon well be able to match union and soccer as truely international sports and shrug off the tag of a small time provincial sport.
Its coming along nicely in England,Ireland,Scotland,Wales for starters, then again oversights mean nothing to you and Lebanon where according to your worshipfull mate Fitzsimons said it would never be played) .And of course France now has a team in the ESL in 2006 (keep it a secret chum). No one is suggesting it will match overtake or get near union and soccer.BTW union for all its hype of being played in 130 plus countries, the only countries where it is a national sport is NZ,Wales even Sth Africa soccer is the sport played by the larger black population .There are only 7 teams with a realistic chance of winning the 2007WC out of 130 plus, mate when you get anywhere near soccer start bragging otherwise remain grounded. The vast majority of these are very small competitions with expats /some locals,so deriding Lebanon makes your comments puerile.
Using your analogy of a provincial sport for rugby league the Wallabies are only an east coast oz representation,as all the players come from competitions in 2 states. After the 6 billion viewing figure O'Neill and Carr stated would watch the RUWC2003 and the actual figures were a minute fraction of that, you have got to give them medals for hype though.
Rugby league doesnt pretend to be big internationally, just growing the game, there have been setbacks. Then again an 8 team starting up in Jamaica in a couple of weeks is further evidence of growth. The more you deride mate, the more people on the other side continue to expand.

Do the sums my boy. Calculate the numbers that play, the number of family, friends and supporters and then consider that between 1985 and 2002 the numbers playing RUGBY almost doubled and the numbers playing League reduced by 25%.

Now understand that almost all the tickets at a RUGBY match are paid for. As an example....one company buys 100 category 'A' tickets for every Rugby Test and Super 12 game. It then Auctions those tickets and donates the proceeds to charity. The auction proceeds from staff exceed the face value of the tickets manyfold. Rugby fans have a community minded attitude that many on this site may have difficulty understanding. I have been fortunate to attend many Rugby games as a result of these 'CHARITY' auctions.

Please get your facts right.

Well the sums have been done ,since 2002 the numbers of rugby league juniors has increased dramatically .it increase approx 10% in 2003,a further 11% in 2004 and I am led to believe similar figures this year. The total playing ,and this was the first time rugby eague had included school playing numbers in their figures (whereas union had been doing so for some time)was 288,000 in 2004(source ARL development).
The comments noted that 2004 resulted in an unprecedented record increase in junior playing numbers(6-18 years) since the game began to record national statistics formally in the early nineties.
It further advised with school and senior figures added on top, rugby league is closer than it has ever been to a goal of over 300,000 players nationally.
So mate you can throw out what happened 3years ago.
Record playing numbers, record sponsorship, record average crowds,Tv ratings for Fox union would kill for and FTA ratings union would climb over glass to get,SOO TV ratings that ch9 are over the moon about, tri series and league tests with TV ratings beating or at least in a couple of cases comparable with union.
BTW you know stuff all about rugby league because many charities are recipients of rugby league players, officials and supporters involvement.

Ah... so why then did the ARU go all out to purchase League players, and pay them far more than the "faithful" players that they're supposed to respect?

And now those players are the only ones who ever get reported about when it comes to Union...

And why did they hire League defensive coaches, and make the game more like League to try and attract a bigger mainstream audience?

Is that respecting the game above all else?

Why did the game go professional in the first place? What do you think the Super 12 is? It's Murdoch's replacement for Super League, you fool.

f**k these Union idiots are holier-than-thou

you dont understand that when the benevolent rugby union signs up rleague players they are doing charitable works.

you see these resprectable pillars of society are imbued with a sense of service and duty towards the nation.......a result of their private school education, and so each year they extend the hand of friendship to poor unfortunates and help them out of the hell hole of rleague.

they dont need to sign up any rleague players as they have enough good players of their own, but these fine citizens see themselves as being lucky and fortunate and so they wish to repay society and help those less fortunate than themselves.

You may not like it, but I am not picking numbers out of my rear. I am one of hundreds that i spoke to today in Newcastle that would have been at the test in Sydney if we were not engaged in supporting the game here. by the way, the knights were playing tonight and they did not rate a mention.

Facts mate not make believe. the times they are a changing.

Cheers.

facts? they must have been watching the union colts game in Newcastle which was abandoned because of the all in brawl, involving players, spectators and officials.People injured however no charges were made due to no complaints, the old under the carpet trick hey what.(Source the Sun Herald yesterday page 23.You spoke to hundreds in Newcastle:lol: hey, what do you do in your spare time sleep?
BTW nearly 16,000 people attended the Newcastle/Eels match a foregone conclusion with a non winning team without Andrew Johns.they sure hate league there ;-)

they have kept him on in the union because they realise there's more important things in life than winning sports matches.
