Big four offer to take pay cuts to stick together

STORM stars Cameron Smith, Billy Slater, Greg Inglis and Cooper Cronk have approached Melbourne officials offering to take pay cuts to assist the club in their efforts to retain them all and form a competitive squad that fits under the $4.2 million salary cap next year.

Storm players have for some time discussed between themselves the idea of pay cuts to help get the club back under the cap.
However, it is understood Smith, Slater, Inglis and Cronk - who between them account for a staggering $2.2m on the club's player salary list - have spoken to Storm officials, offering to have their incomes reduced in an effort to stick together.

Tired of being branded as greedy, the representative foursome are believed to be willing to have decent-sized slices taken from their pockets to accommodate a draft plan formulated to keep not only them as well as other first-grade fixtures Adam Blair, Sika Manu, Dane Nielsen and, in a best-case scenario, Brett White.

Smith, Inglis and Slater are all listed on the salary cap with incomes of about $600,000, while fellow international Cronk earns between $350,000 and $400,000. All four, it is understood, have made it clear they would take pay cuts in order to stay together in Melbourne.

The concept of salary reductions at the Storm next year is one the NRL are aware of. The NRL would not accept Storm pay cuts to get them under the cap in 2010 as mid-year alterations to salaries are not allowed. However, they will give them the green light for next year, although reductions in salary of an outrageous nature will not be acceptable. ''We wouldn't allow it in 2010,'' NRL chief executive David Gallop said.

''We'd certainly need to look at any proposal they put to us that will keep them under the cap in 2011, so long as it's fair to the other clubs in the competition.''

Melbourne are awaiting the delivery of an audit, commissioned and summarised by club owner News Ltd, into the extent of their cap cheating before moving on pay cuts and releases to determine their roster for next season.

Players have spoken of their discontent with the ongoing wait for the investigation findings to be released, having had their futures in the air in the almost three months since the Storm's breach and resulting penalty was announced on April 22.

The plan by Storm officials to keep their leading four players, reported by the Herald for the past fortnight, has been inadvertently aided by the NRL's recent tinkering to the salary-cap structure.

Their ability to retain players will be assisted by the $100,000 rise in the cap for 2011, the doubling of the marquee player allowance from $150,000 to $300,000 and a review of the third-party payment regulations, which will make legal next year some of the arrangements - including the guaranteeing of external deals - that have landed them in hot water for the past five years.

So about now is the time I start to get teh sh*ts with Gallop and the NRL .... its ok for cheating merkins to take pay cuts to keep their mates at their team, but its not ok for a few parra players to do so to keep a guy on minimum wage at their team ..... f**kwits!

so what!!! its the f**king stand gallop and the nrl set last year so kinga couldnt stay at parra but melbourne players can do it AFTER they have blantantly been caught cheating AND these 4 players r the main ones who were taking them f**king money yet they can stay together but one player who was doing the right thing by the NRL who was a 125k valuedf player had to leave our club. not only did they cheat us out of a f**king premiership but this is just the sting that will make it worse!!! i wouldnt be surprised if players from other clubs start taking stands and leaving the NRL on their own accord.....i have no faith in gallop or the NRL anymore.

It really is disgraceful if true. Especially after the NRL were the ones who claimed that players taking pay cuts provided the club with an unfair advantage in getting that player over other clubs. The fact that the salary cap is going up just makes it worse.

If they are allowed to get away with this I reckon I might just about give up following league. What a joke!

Honestly if they let them take paycuts then the whole point of the salary cap is dead.

They stuffed it up with the Bulldogs years ago (letting them take paycuts) and they're stuffing it up again with the Storm.

GET A CONSISTENT POLICY that works on salary cap breaches from $1 to $1million. MAke teams pay for it right away and penalise them the following season too.

Why the hell are the cheaters being rewarded by being allowed to stick together?????

Honestly, if they are allowed to take pay cuts I will be cheering every tackle for someone to hurt those 4 filthy merkins. It's not sporting, but nor is cheating.

The entire existence of Melbourne in the NRL was in News interests and not on rugby league fans'.

They served two purposes - to avoid the broncos having to compete with a second Brisbane team, by funnelling the overflow of talent into another state based team, and by tryin to expand the pay tv market.

It was so artificial the entire franchise has had to be propped up with a series of indulgences, from being propped up financially, to a blind eye to dubious defensive practices, some dream refereeing decisions...

Then the heartland clubs get smashed by a salary cap said to impose evenness on the competition, which actually gives Brisbane a big advantage, and which the Storm don't have any regard for. Both clubs somehow manage to continue to provide the vast majority of the rep players through the salary cap era.

To me nothing summed up what a blight on rugby leave the Storm are than being at the grand final las year a week after the bulldogs semi.

One game was a full house of seething passion between two arch rivals. Win or lose that game, it was a highlight for me of my time watching league.

The other was a soulless exhibition match in which one set of fans cared, and a few try hard blow INS pretended they cared. When Molly Meldrum
ran on to the ground at the end of the game it summed it all up for me.

Our whole competition and this great game have been hijacked and we've all been played for a number of years.

Oh, how noble! If these 4 players weren't so greedy in the first place then maybe the Storm wouldn't be in this position. Screw this idea for a joke. All this 'sticking by our mates' and 'everyone is against us' crap is beginning to make me sick. You bloody well cheated, so deal with the consequences!

It was greed and arrogance that got the Storm into trouble to begin with and what this club needs is a few seasons down the bottom of the NRL ladder to teach them a bit of humility. If that means Inglis going to AFL, Rugby Union or the WWE, and Cameron Smith going overseas so I don't have to listen to his whining anymore (did anyone else hear him after the Dogs game?) then so be it.

The Melbourne Storm weren't thinking about any other club when they were cheating, so why should the NRL and every other club start making concessions for them now.

If they let melb do it they would have to let all clubs do it not just next year but every year hereafter.

If Gallop lets them take pay cuts for 2011, he should be sacked immediately and not let anywhere near an independant commision. What happened to the earlier stance that the Storm would have to honour all existing contracts?

The Kingston situation was a farce, and the Eels club should be using Josh, and every other league writer, to point out this injustice. Get public opinion even further against the Storm.

The sooner News are out of this game the better.

Let me get this straight, last year we were beaten in the GF by an illegal team,We can't keep Kinga even though players offer to take cuts. But the team that has been cheating every team and their fans for 5 years can??? If true
That is an absolute disgrace and just about finish me in the great game of RL. News and Gallop out NOW!!

I totally agree and I've never felt like this before.

This is pretty unfair:(
Seems like we've unreasonably been given the bitter side of this entire affair.
Lost the GF particularly with fans waiting 20 years for a GF win, to the team that is well over the cap. Then we have to give away a few key players that were a significant and integral part of our success last year, whilst the team thats over the cap and cheated our asses out of the GF gets to keep the players they want because their 4 stars know how to whinge and get Gallop to give them a nice rub in the genitals.
But what can you expect from Gallop, I was doing abit of background read on him, the bloke doesn't give a rats ass about the sport in general, he was just smart enough to pounce on the job when he realised he could establish it as a business and this is why the NRL is such a mess, when you have scrubby corporations like news ltd owning a good share of the NRL as well as a cheating team and a weakass money-pincher like Gallop you inevitably get this pile of sh*t happening.

I'm dead set pissed at all this considering i'm one of the fans that's been waiting since the good Sterlo/Kenny days for a bloody premiership only to see it lost in the worst way.

Just on another point...

So yesterday there was no mention of paycuts to keep any of their other 10 players on the chopping block, then all of a sudden the extent of the rorting is exposed and their cap for next year will be even smaller.... so the 4 fun boys now start talking about pay cuts so they can stay together???

Seriously, with a clique like that, I don't know what would attract a player to joining the club.

I've never hated a team as much as Melbourne and I don't think I've hated a player as much as those 4. I'm glad we won't get Cronk next year, he has a sh*t attitude.
