What's in this week's Big League?

9 June 2004

The State of Origin series is hotting up and this week Big League is giving readers the chance to be among over 60,000 fans at Telstra Stadium for what could be a series-deciding game three.

Thanks to Gatorade, we have 10 double passes for Origin III, so make sure you pick up a copy of this week's magazine to be in it to win it.

Our round 14 issue is packed with fascinating stories. In his column, NSW selector Laurie Daley reveals why the Blues had to pick Brad Fittler, who is shooting for a fairytale series victory at Suncorp Stadium next Wednesday night.

There is an exclusive feature on Manly legend Noel Cleal, who also reveals why the player he discovered as a teenage sensation - Jamie Lyon - will never return to Parramatta. Find out which club Lyon will join.

The Warriors are a club in crisis following the demise of their coach Daniel Anderson. We reveal the behind-the-scenes moves that led to Anderson's downfall, and debate how the Warriors will recover.

With so many coaches, players and officials under scrutiny, we take a look at the pressure to perform in the NRL today - and ask if a contract really is worth the paper it's written on.

Melbourne winger Matt Geyer speaks of his terror at the sight of a sickening 20-centimetre long gash on his left leg, suffered against the Tigers last Saturday night.

We profile Arthur Kitinas, the man in the South Sydney hotseat following the sacking of embattled coach Paul Langmack.

Read about Tigers veteran Mark O'Neill, who is on the verge of 200 first grade games.

While Eels coach Brian Smith struggles for results, his younger brother Tony is enjoying life in charge of table-topping Leeds in England. We speak to the other Smith about his move into coaching.

Plus there are stories on Bulldogs star Willie Tonga and the retired NRL stars, such as Darren Smith and Steve Renouf, who are now making comebacks.

And it wouldn't be another bumper issue without our lovely cheergirl. This week, we feature a Cowgirl - and reveal the picture that led to Jennifer Hawkins being crowned Miss Universe last week.

Plus there's all the facts, stats, in-depth analysis and team lists in our 32-page official match program section.

So if you love your footy, you must have a copy of Big League. It's the bible for all league lovers.

Hurri,

You have provided in one easy thread at least a dozen reasons why I never buy that magazine.

It should be renamed "Big League....Womans Day Edition".

It looks like 90% of news stories and articles claim that Lyon left cause he was just sick of the big city and the NRL, the other 10% just want a story and claim Smith drove him out. Idiots like Hadley ignore the large majority of articles and reports including Lyon's statements himself, and just believe what they want to believe. If Hadley reads a rumour about Lyon leaving cause of Smith, he'll embrace it and state it as proof, however if an article or report says otherwise he'll just dismiss it.

Just saw the front cover of Big League.

Headline is about how contracts are worth nothing in League these days.

There are cartoon drawings of Paul Langmack, Daniel Anderson, Ali Lauititi, and Steve Mortimer.

WHY IS JAMIE LYON MISSING ????????

Yes Colonel, but the point is this:

The clubs break contracts by sacking coaches, and the magazine slams them for not honouring the contract that was signed.

Jamie breaks a contract, and all the rag does not treat him the same way. It goes on about his plans to return to the NRL and presents him in a very positive light.

Stinks of double standards that would do Raaaaaay proud.
