Biggest Letdowns

What games over the years were you really looking forward to that turned out to be huge disappointments?

For the PS3 I think Gran Turismo 5 is still the biggest let down for mine. Very average graphics, barely an improvement from GT4 on PS2. Awful B-spec mode which is basically half the game.

Duke Nukem Forever was f**king woeful as well but i wasnt expecting much from that....

I'd say Juiced 2 considering ALL the races were circuit laps, and the Sydney stage didn't include a race on the harbor bridge. It was a step down from the original Juiced in terms of tracks, but it had better cars, I'll give it that.

The new wave of FIFA games is a let down because there are no cheats like their used to be in games such as fifa 2000. Also you can (lol) slide tackle the goalie when he has the ball, there's no more indoor games etc.

Splinter Cell Conviction, while an awesome game, isn't long enough. You can finish the game in about 3-4 hours.

Most of you probably don't know many pre-Halo Bungie titles, but they released a f**king fantastic (and revolutionary at the time) real time tactics/strategy game called Myth in the late 90s and followed it up with an equally good sequel, Myth II.

It was dark, had a fantastic storyline, great soundtrack, brilliant multiplayer, was heavily customisable, and had so many unanswered questions that there are still discussion boards for it today.

When they were bought out, they sold the rights to Take Two Interactive who proceeded to answer every question (poorly), put together a buggy game, and worst - made it a prequel. It basically killed the franchise entirely and they stopped supporting it altogether not long after.

Still bitter about it to this day.

Following up from one of the greatest platformers of all time, I found Yoshi's Story to be a big drop off. Basically everything that made it's predecessor unique was gone and replaced with this sickly sweet environment. You know, I loved Yoshi a lot better when he didn't make noises. The game was also too easy and the system of having to collect 'x' amount of fruit to clear the level just didn't gel with me.

As a kid, I thought Buck Bumble would become one of the big video game mascots. I was wrong and couldn't even get pass the first level due to the trippy camera, gameplay and blurry visuals.

Earthworm Jim 3D was another game I was really looking forward to for the N64. I loved the cartoon show as a kid and thought the translation into 3D would be the best step for everybody's favourite worm. Again, I was wrong. It's one of those games that was basically dead on arrival, the game was constantly delayed & by the time it came out, it just felt very dated. It's a shame too because you could see some genuine charm there, but unfortunately it was pieced together by some very sketchy game-design choices.

And then there is Kingdom Hearts. I enjoyed the first game, thought it honored Disney in the right light while telling a vague yet compelling story. The Action RPG/Platforming system while a little clunky & repetitive was a good fit for the series and all in all the game did a good job of laying the groundwork for what would become one of the most popular new series in gaming.

Then Square lost the plot.

Instead of following on from the original game of the series, Square went in a new direction on a completely different platform. Kingdom Hearts: Chains of Memories for the GBA, was at it's core a re-telling of the first game except in-between exploring all the old worlds, the game would introduce new characters (all of them coming off as bad Final Fantasy rejects) that would have a huge bearing on the series from that point on.

This all lead to Kingdom Hearts II, one of the messiest games of all time. Not only was the story choppy thanks to all these bland CoM characters but the gameplay became ridiculously linear. Instead of offering these huge Disney Worlds, KHII offered linear worlds with one path to ensure that you played the game the way they wanted. In the end, it just became a lame Devil May Cry/God of War clone where you just mash X and Triangle as much as possible.

Just thinking about it brings back all the disappointment I felt in 06.

Myth was the shit back in the days.

If your PC could run that game back then, you were the coolest kid on the block hahah.

This year my biggest let down has been FIFA 13, good game and improved on several aspects of the previous game but not enough to warrant a new purchase.

I'll second (or third) the Diablo III disappointment. I pre-ordered, endured it running poorly on my old laptop, and then played it when I got my new gaming rig. Just didn't really stack up.

On a smaller level, any Skyrim DLC so far has been a let down. Ditto the latest WoW expansion.

I would love to hear people expand on the Diablo 3 resentment.

I was hugely into Parts 1 and 2, didn't get 3 as I recently got a PS3 so been playing plenty on that plus my PC is pretty ancient. I was spewin' I wouldn't be able to play it but sounds like I haven't missed out.

Diablo 2 was epic, what's so bad about 3?

I was pretty dissatisfied with the storyline tbh. But that might just be the fact I'm 28 (ugh, 29) now and I was 19 or so when I was playing Diablo 2.

But was it all fairly similar in terms of character development, runes, weapons, etc?

GTA 4 for me.

Still an awesome game, but I didn't like the storyline and the guy you play as, Niko.

The multiplayer was loads of fun, though.

I'll add myself to the chorus of disenchanted Diablo fans. Ultimately, the Diablo series is about 3 things:

- items, and sifting through loads of shit to find the good stuff
- character customisation (stat and skill assignment, along with gear choice)
- killing hordes of demons (and undead and animals)

D3 has pretty much done away with character customisation. Stat points are auto-assigned, and all characters of the same class have access to the full skill set. A character may at any time re-specialise simply by selecting a new set of 6 active and 3 passive skills and waiting for 30 seconds. There is no need for more than one of each character class (though the game generously allows 10 characters per player).

It's bleedingly obvious why this has been done - to limit server space, and by making items the only variable, to force people to use Blizzard's cash cow, the Auction House (preferably the real money one).

Removing one of the 3 key aspects of the Diablo series means D3 is not truly a successor game to D2. It is a completely different game dressed up in familiar clothing (albeit very pretty clothing).

There are other issues - chiefly the lack of a Single Player mode (part of the now standard DRM obsession) - but the above is what kills the game. It's not a bad game, but it is no way a worthy sequel, and there is zero chance it will have the longevity and replayability of Diablo II.

For the record, I still play Diablo II just about every day.

2 things completely destroyed the games premise.

1 - Character Builds (or lackthereof). The skill system in Diablo 3 is a watered down heap of shit. Builds in D3 rely wholly and solely on the loot system... which im about to explain as a...

2 - COMPLETE f**kING FAILURE. Diablo is all about the loot. The auction house destroyed any incentive for killing particular bosses or farming particular sections of the game. They turned the entire game into a gold farming exercise - as anything is far more easily sourced on the AH. It destroyed the trade/barter culture of the game and destroyed any will I had to look for gear whatsoever. They broke the system in order to monetize it - for no other reason. It was a profit based decision, and it's a piece of shit.

Those 2 changes alone completely shat all over Diablos legacy... and had I flicked to page 2 and read Jason's post, I likely would have just quoted him and +1'd it.

good call on Yoshi's Story too, Pete. Totally agree there. Yoshi's Island is amazing to play to this day... Yoshi's Story was an extremely short, rainbow coloured heap of shit.

Well, I didn't really expand on your second point. 100% true of course. Blizzard saw the 3rd party item sellers in D2 and decided they wanted a piece of that pie. Of course, they ignored the fact that the people who kept playing the game for years - the ones who kept it afloat long past the used by date of the average game - never used these dodgy 3rd party "services", but rather played the game over and over and over and traded with each other. They've essentially set D3 up to cater to the short term players who did utilise these services.

I must admit I wasn't a huge fan of GTA4, I still enjoyed it, but found halfway through it I was just going through the motions.

Ballad of Gay Tony however totally redeemed it and brought back everything that made the franchise great.
